Those of us that recently flocked to popular tourist destinations, such as Barcelona, Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Florence, Berlin, Lisbon and Palma de Mallorca and beyond, probably encountered a different, grimmer host community than we had envisioned beforehand. Although for many the sun was shining bright(er), the scenery was stunning and the food delicious, there were also signs of a changing attitude, and in some cases visible resistance, towards tourists. Pieces of anti-tourist graffiti that read “Tourists you are the terrorist”, “All tourists are bastards” and even “Why call it the tourist season if we can’t shoot them?” now (literally) troubled our view at many popular touristic sites. In some cases, for example Barcelona, resentment was even fiercer, resulting in large protests, tyre-slashing and windowsmashing. These actions went beyond merely raising awareness for aggressive and underdressed tourists drinking all day and yelling all night, but were local responses against the economics and morality of all types of mass tourism, which according to many impoverishes the poorest in society and everyone’s standards of living. While the industry has long upheld its vital contribution to the livelihood of local people, resistance towards tourism development in these touristic hot spots seems to grow every year. Although local governments are trying to cope with this so-called form of ‘over-tourism’ through scapegoats like tourism restrictions, taxes and other measures, it deflects attention away from the challenges of global tourism development. Restricting the number of tourists or tourism-related activities will do little to solve deep-rooted problems like inequality, exclusion and exploitation. Conversely, we should not forget that at the same time that many protests against yet another season of tourist hordes, in many parts of the world the tourism and hospitality industry are still vital to alleviate distressed economic conditions for many by providing access to critical income and opportunities for prosperity.

Jonathan Goldstein is best known among scholars of the Bible, early Judaism and nascent Christianity for his books on 1 and 2 Maccabees in the Anchor Bible series. In this volume of collected essays and reviews he provides a panorama of his other writings and research over a period of 23 years, ranging from 1966 to 1988. The eleven articles reveal the author's wide range of interests and expertise, and are divided into two main sections.

Calling for user-centric VR design research in hospitality and tourism

VR has enjoyed a steep growth in awareness in society in recent years and is regarded a promising tool for the design and enhancement of experiences. However, as research and use cases in the hospitality context are expanding rapidly, it is crucial to define a clearer research direction that aligns the number of scattered studies across various fields. It is time to overcome the boundaries of the technological dimension and explore methods for purposeful VR design. This research note calls for more user-centric VR studies and developments to define the future direction of VR implementations in the hospitality and tourism industry. To achieve this, the authors recommend the use of design methodology with a focus on the first steps in the design process to clearly identify and understand issues concerning the customer. The customer needs and desires need to be analyzed at the core independent of VR technology. The need to shift the focus from technology to the purpose for the user is identified.

Sea, sand and shadow economy – consumer acceptance of shadow hospitality in Greece
IF 0.8 Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2018-09-01 DOI: 10.1386/HOSP.8.3.205_1
Chrysostomos Apostolidis, Stephanie Haeussler
This study explores tourists’ acceptance of shadow hospitality (SH) and examines how individuals rationalize this acceptance. Based on deterrence theory and neutralization techniques (NTs), a theoretical model is proposed to support the development of strategies to control SH and its negative aspects. In-depth interviews with respondents from Greece, United Kingdom and Germany were carried out and analysed using template analysis. Five broad themes are identified explaining respondents’ acceptance of SH: economic benefits, domesticity, supporting local communities, seeking authentic experiences and uniqueness. Perceived quality, penalties and shame are the factors negatively influencing acceptance of SH. Although people appear to be aware of the issues associated with SH, various NTs are used to justify acceptance of SH and avoid (self-)blame. The research explains how tourists can be stimulated to consciously consider their purchasing behaviour. The various NTs employed suggest that governments and businesses need to develop various interventions to control SH and reduce its impact on the tourism sector. By developing a theoretical model, the study contributes to the understanding of tourists’ acceptance of SH and provides a foundation for further research in the increasingly popular but under-researched informal hospitality sector.
