ABSTRACT This case study research presents the entrepreneurial journey of three sisters who created ‘Burger-E-KellaFote’, a fast food business in Bangladesh. The case focuses on how the entrepreneurs achieved success by overcoming many socio-cultural challenges. It explores women entrepreneurs in a country where customary practices, traditions and religious beliefs curtail its women's ability to enjoy their economic and socio-cultural rights. From the beginning, the three sisters have had to defy social expectations, struggle to be taken seriously, cope with the fear of being evicted by neighbourhood business owners, and overcome other complications preventing them from achieving their goal of successfully establishing their new business. The case study ends by addressing the challenges and success of the three women founders and some implications for other women entrepreneurs in starting businesses. The authors conclude with a discussion in the context of relevant literature, concluding thoughts, limitation, and further research.

ABSTRACT We study entrepreneurial path dependency by tracing the development of related and unrelated variety in labour market regions in Norway between 1992 and 2012. Path dependency means that the current socioeconomic process is a function of previous states, related variety means that the regional industry structure is complementary with an overlapping knowledgebase, while unrelated variety means that the structure is fragmented with limited complementarity. With regard to related variety, we find a favourable long-term entrepreneurial path-dependent effect, as the regional industry structure reproduces a pattern of overlapping cognitive models that are transferred into the very fabric of new firms in the regional economy. With regard to unrelated variety, we find no entrepreneurial path-dependent effects at all. We finally find that the regional industry size has an entrepreneurial path-dependent effect on related and unrelated variety, but it is short-term and abates over time. We address the findings’ implications for entrepreneurship.

ABSTRACT This study examines the practices and policies adopted by Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to manage working capital and its various components. A survey of owners/managers of 269 Indian SMEs identified working capital management (WCM) practices. Findings of the study indicate that Indian SMEs typically have an informal approach toward WCM and these firms try to match the maturity of assets and financing sources. These SMEs mainly depend on internal funding from retained earnings and external funding from a line of credit to fund working capital needs. Indian SMEs consider the cash conversion cycle and net working capital as a key value metrics in monitoring working capital. Micro-, small-, and medium-sized firms often differ in terms of their WCM practices. By updating and extending previous research on WCM, this study fills a gap in the literature by providing insights into practices adopted by Indian SMEs managing WCM and its components.

ABSTRACT Increased competition has highlighted the need for more effective firm level strategies for SMEs to achieve competitive advantage. In fact, SMEs face higher risks in terms of globalization as a result of their limited resources and small size. This study highlights the importance of business strategy in SME performance with the mediating role of enterprise risk management. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 327 Pakistani SMEs. The hypotheses are tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in AMOS. The results indicate that business strategy has a significant influence on SME performance and enterprise risk management. In addition, enterprise risk management partially mediates the relationship between business strategy and SME performance. This study finds that firms with a unique business strategy endorse formal risk management practices which in turn facilitate superior performance in the market. Implications for practices are discussed.

ABSTRACT In this conceptual paper, a system design paradigm, intended to help small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) engage in enterprise risk management (ERM) with a minimum investment in resources, is proposed. The foundations are both compliance with ERM general guidelines and two main principles, namely adaptability to different SMEs profiles and simplicity of use. The solution emerges as a combination of a simplified framework and a customizable methodology. Then, a full-ERM system is proposed whose enactment is supported by a specially developed risk representation model based on causal dependencies between events, taking into account risk interconnectivity and strategic context alignment. The sequential ERM framework, designed with mandatory and optional modules, is presented together with its associated risk representation methodology part. The latter is intended to be straightforward and adjustable to various contexts.

ABSTRACT In 2017 EU exports supported 36 million jobs in the EU. Furthermore, it was estimated that on average each billion euro of extra-EU exports supported more than 13,000 jobs in the EU Exporting is widely viewed as one of the key drivers of economic growth and many traditional approaches have been applied to engender greater levels of exporting by indigenous enterprises. However, Sarasvathy [(2001). Causation and effectuation: Toward a theoretical shift from economic inevitability to entrepreneurial contingency. Academy of Management Review, 26, 243–263, (2013). ABSTRACT Family-SMEs utilize their non-family employees to achieve their developmental goals and aspirations. A particular challenge facing many Family-SMEs is how to effectively manage and motivate their non-family employees. Performance management systems represents an important means through which Family-SMEs can achieve this. The limited empirical evidence on performance management systems in Family-SMEs suggest that they are largely ad-hoc in nature and biased towards family-members. Drawing on organizational justice theory, this study seeks to explore how Family-SMEs performance manage their non-family employees, and non-family employees’ reactions to such process. Based on an illustrative case study, we found that Family-SMEs utilized both informal and formal practices to manage their non-family employees’ performance. Moreover, we also identified how family involvement in management can heighten a sense of injustice concerning the process among non-family employees’. Our findings make a valuable contribution to the existing but limited literature on the performance management of non-family employee.

ABSTRACT This article explores digital entrepreneurship and the impact of digitalization on the entrepreneurial environment in Beijing. The empirical data are composed of 20 semi-structured interviews with Beijing-based entrepreneurs. The article applies institutional theory to explore the state sponsored push for entrepreneurship, innovation and digitalization, and how the entrepreneurs are experiencing transformed environments. The findings highlight that entrepreneurs experience a heightened societal trust and increased support, yet a lack of institutional trust. Government initiatives and digitalization are found to have rejuvenated entrepreneurship in China, providing greater opportunities for economic action, but dominant institutions need to further develop to ensure the growth of a successful and sustainable entrepreneurial environment. This article contributes to digital entrepreneurship literature by offering unique empirical evidence regarding how institutional environments (e.g. local contexts, regulatory and social forces) can influence and impact the emergence of private enterprise in China.

Government initiatives and digitalization are found to have rejuvenated entrepreneurship in China, providing greater opportunities for economic action, but dominant institutions need to further develop to ensure the growth of a successful and sustainable entrepreneurial environment. This article contributes to digital entrepreneurship literature by offering unique empirical evidence regarding how institutional environments (e.g. local contexts, regulatory and social forces) can influence and impact the emergence of private enterprise in China.","PeriodicalId":45085,"journal":{"name":"Small Enterprise Research","volume":"6 1","pages":"36 - 54"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13215906.2019.1570321","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72399582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Gaining venture legitimacy is important for social enterprises to survive; yet, many of them face legitimacy deficit and fail sooner than their commercial counterpart. Entrepreneurship scholars have recently recognized that storytelling is linked to new venture legitimacy which may lead to a reduction in the chances of venture failure. However, existing knowledge regarding the relationship between storytelling and social venture legitimacy is limited. Using case studies from social enterprises in Indonesia and the United Kingdom, this article examines how storytelling can lead to venture legitimacy in a social entrepreneurship context. Utilizing a narrative transportation approach, the research details what actions can be taken to support social enterprises. The article contributes to the literature by providing a conceptual framework that links storytelling and venture legitimacy in the social entrepreneurship domain.
