In recent years, the number of long-distance trains running on non-electrified lines has been increasing in Poland. Unfortunately, trains running on non-electrified lines, unlike those running on the hook of electric locomotives, are very often canceled, especially in the winter. In this research, the analysis of which lines had the most frequent cancellations of trains in 2021 and the reasons for these cancellations were analyzed. The results show that the most common cause of train cancellations was the lack of an efficient locomotive at the starting station. Most often, accessibility problems concern Czech series 754 diesel locomotives. The numbers of canceled trains in February 2021 and 2022 were also compared. The comparison showed that although the situation is far from ideal, it has improved significantly.

We present a novel study concerning the attitudes of road transport enterprises towards a broad application of telematics in operational management in road transportation. The study aims to assess telematics application in road transport and its changes over time while showing the factors most likely to determine the systems’ use. Unobserved categories defined in the technology acceptance model (TAM) are adjusted to measure perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitudes toward using telematics systems by road transport managers. The study is based on 323 transport enterprises analyzed in two waves in 2020 and 2021. The use of two different time points is motivated by an observed increase in the digitalization of transport documents caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical findings support the TAM’s usefulness in evaluating IT in transport business management. The findings also reveal that the significantly increased telematics use in 2020 was observed while it was endured. The results are checked for robustness and used for simulations. The study compares managers’ behaviors over time and simulates the effect of individual (observed) variables on unobserved TAM categories.

A number of physical methods are used to survey railway track ballast to assess its degradation as a function of deposition. Simulation tests on track models are also conducted. These testing methods, which are generally labour-intensive and expensive, provide an accurate understanding of the extent of ballast degradation. However, the impact of inadequate maintenance can be observed, even on the surface. Therefore, it seems natural in this case to use image registration. State-of-the-art machine vision systems of track geometry cars provide the means to do this. Obtained ballast images provide a baseline for evaluating its level in relation to sleepers. However, no information is available on other signs of track degradation, such as overgrown vegetation (weeds) or the so-called local muddy areas, which are generally a consequence of poor drainage and a lack of subgrade insulation. These degradations are observed to generate distinctive colour images that are superimposed on the overall image of the ballast surface. They differ in colour and shape. Hence, the authors used this phenomenon to develop an algorithm for the extraction of ballast degradation images based on RGB imaging. Surface descriptors have also been offered to assess these degradations. Extensive measurement material from the railway lines was used to conduct survey experiments based on the examples. The results clearly demonstrate the high success rate of the applied method.

As a heritage site, Gulangyu has a unique character and importance in its community function. Most heritage sites in China are car-free destinations where walking is the primary mode of transport and a medium of interaction in residents' daily lives. This study investigates residents' perceived evaluations of the landscape environment and residents' walking behaviour using descriptive statistics, correlation and logistic regression analysis to derive relationship between landscape and walking behaviour. The aim is to derive the landscape factors that influence walking behaviour and improve the basis for enhancing the walkability of Gulangyu. The results show that function is most strongly correlated with purposeful walking. And the recreational walkers are influenced by a combination of function, safety, comfort, aesthetics and pleasantness.

This article presents an approach to the verification of the safety integrity level (SIL) of rail vehicle subassemblies in accordance with the applicable railway standards PN-EN ISO 50126-1, PN-EN ISO 50126:2, and PN-EN ISO 50129. Particular attention has been given to the calculation procedure related to the determination of the tolerable hazard rate and tolerable functional failure rate indicators in a situation where various reliability indicators have been declared for components of rail vehicles, such as MTTFD or B10D. In this case, the verification of the safety integrity level using the above-mentioned railway standards may be difficult, and it becomes necessary to use additional standards for safety systems based on electronic components. An example is the PN-EN ISO 13849-1:2006-01 standard, which contains a calculation method based on the transformation of the exponential model, which is useful for hazard and risk analyses of electronic systems containing components with different reliability indices. Another supplementary standard is the PN-EN 61025:2007 standard, which concerns fault tree analysis. Based on the above-mentioned standards, an algorithm was developed to verify the safety integrity level of the frequency converter control system. The obtained results allowed us to confirm the fulfillment of the functional safety requirements of the considered system.

The increasing population in urban areas has expanded the role of the transportation system to meet people’s mobility needs in developing countries. Since the demand for transportation services is proliferating, bus rapid transit (BRT) offers the opportunity to create a high-quality mass transit system in developing countries. The presence of BRT Trans Semarang, however, has not yet become a solution to city traffic problems since the transit system and its operation are not yet implemented. This study aims to explore the service quality and operation of BRT based on observations and passengers’ viewpoints at the BRT shelter, which is located in the central business district. The method of the research is a statistical descriptive and qualitative analysis using variables from passengers’ perspectives and observations on bus operation. The result shows that the capacity of the transit shelter, the interval between bus arrivals, bus dwell times, and BRT infrastructures (door size) are the most influential variables on passengers’ satisfaction. Furthermore, from the operation point of view, users’ trip destinations and maximum delay times are considered important for the improvement of BRT service.

As environmental requirements become more stringent and the planet becomes more polluted, the replacement of conventional diesel is attracting more interest. For alternative fuels, such as biodiesel and natural gas, to be used, their effects must be examined not only in terms of the engine’s environmental indicators but also in terms of engine vibrations and sound pressure. This study examined the influence of dual fuel – biodiesel and natural gas – on vibrations and sound pressure of a compression-ignition (CI) engine. Conventional diesel or hydrotreated vegetable oil biodiesel was used as a pilot fuel for gas ignition. The gaseous fuel was natural gas, which was injected into the intake manifold with different energy shares of the gaseous fuel (40%, 60% and 80%). Tests were performed at a constant engine crankshaft speed and a fixed start of pilot fuel injection of 6° BTDC while the fuel composition and engine load were changed. This experiment revealed correlations between gas energy share (GES) in liquid fuel and ecological and energy indicators of a CI engine.

The aim of this paper is to design a methodological procedure for determining the costs of companies in the process of travelling the last mile in the context of changing the business model. At present, traditional services such as delivery by post or by courier to a particular consumer’s place of residence are still used to deliver consignments to consumers. In recent years, however, new delivery methods have begun to be used, such as ParcelShops, lockers located at specific locations, or dispensing points where the consumer comes to pick up the shipment. In order for each of these methods of delivering goods to consumers to work as efficiently as possible, it is necessary to incur certain costs. The results of this paper contain a mathematical relationship for calculating the total costs that a postal company has to incur in order to deliver goods to consumers within the last mile using the available delivery options.

Cases of heavy traffic congestion (commonly referred to as traffic jams) have negative influences on the economy, public health, and social life. This makes it important to assist drivers in these situations with Internet of Things (IoT) systems. The aim of this article is to present a low-cost device that supports driving in traffic jams. The system, which is based on data from a laser sensor with a range of up to 40 m, controls the distances to vehicles in front of and behind a moving car. Through audio and video signals, it warns the driver whether the vehicle in front of or behind the equipped vehicle is too close. This allows the driver to control the distance and avoid minor collisions.

The subject of this research is convergence technology for the surface finishing of vehicle parts. A literature review has been conducted to carry out a comparative analysis of existing methods for the surface finishing of parts used in the manufacturing of aircraft, hydraulic and pneumatic devices, and other vehicles. Prospects are shown for further research on methods with the aim of creating a complex technology (i.e., convergence) that combines information technologies; nanotechnologies; and thermochemical, electrochemical, and mechanical processing methods. A method is proposed for selecting and combining surface finishing methods according to a five-point expert assessment, which allows the batch processing of vehicle parts. Based on this method, the concept of convergence technology for the surface finishing of vehicle parts is proposed, which includes the impulse thermal energy method, honing, superfinishing, and electrochemical processing. An expanded process is presented for manufacturing parts with high-precision, low-roughness surfaces and a specified microrelief by using electrochemical superfinishing and electrochemical honing. A scheme of the concentration (focusing) of the current flow during electrochemical superfinishing due to the movement of the electrode relative to the part surface is proposed, which enables the effect of surface polishing and the removal of oxidation products. Convergence technology for the surface finishing of vehicle parts will provide parts’ geometric dimensions with micro- and nano-precision and allow the precision machining of small-diameter holes and complex profiles, increased machining accuracy (up to 0.001 microns), the possibility of batch processing, and the possibility of process automation.

Convergence technology for the surface finishing of vehicle parts will provide parts’ geometric dimensions with micro- and nano-precision and allow the precision machining of small-diameter holes and complex profiles, increased machining accuracy (up to 0.001 microns), the possibility of batch processing, and the possibility of process automation.","PeriodicalId":45193,"journal":{"name":"Transport Problems","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45543287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
