Abstract Performance profiling is a theory-driven, client-led assessment method utilized by sport psychology professionals to help uncover important physical, psychological, technical, and tactical factors associated with a client's sport. This holistic technique has been shown to influence a number of psychological constructs important to performance, such as self-awareness and intrinsic motivation. Different variations of the performance profile are available for professionals to use in practice. The aims of this paper are to overview performance profiling and its underpinning theory, provide sport psychology professionals with applied guidelines to implement each version, and discuss practitioner experiences when using different variations of the tool.

Abstract Although a major goal of social justice-based education is to facilitate changes in discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, it can sometimes backfire and elicit negative responses from students. One framework that may help us understand the psychological processes of the recipients of social justice education is the transtheoretical model. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the utility of the transtheoretical model as a framework for understanding behavior change in social justice education in kinesiology. We provide a brief introduction of the transtheoretical model and examples of how social justice educators can use the five stages of change as a guiding framework to design educational materials that promote beliefs and behavior change for social justice.

Abstract Across ages and levels of competition, sport coaches in the U.S. encounter athletes who are learning English (ALEs). ALEs bring significant linguistic and cultural resources, but can struggle to communicate in English. Concurrently, coaches may be challenged to meet these athletes’ needs as language learners. In this article, we describe how intersecting English as a Second Language classroom teaching practices with quality coaching can support language development and sociocultural transitions for ALEs. In doing so, we provide specific considerations coaches can implement into their coaching toolkits to help promote effective communication, relationship building, and enhanced athlete experience.

Developing an Organizational Mission Statement in Youth Sport: Utilizing Mad Libs as a Novel, Shared Leadership Approach 在青少年体育中发展组织使命宣言:利用疯狂的谎言作为一种新颖的、共享的领导方法

Abstract Sport organizations often utilize mission statements as “road maps” to guide the design and delivery of sport to youth. In the present work, we utilized a novel technique and sought out the perspectives of multiple stakeholders to craft a mission statement for an elite youth volleyball club on the east coast of the United States. Prior to the competitive season, a subset of club administrators (n = 3) head coaches (n = 6), parents (n = 10), and athletes (n = 11) participated in Mad Libs, a phrasal word game in which individuals are asked to fill in missing words in a prescribed, written story template. Key mission-relevant words were left blank, and beneath each blank was a prompt such as “noun (what the club should provide)”, “verb (what the club should do)”, or “adjective (kind of partnerships the club should build).” Participants completed stories individually, and responses were synthesized using content analysis. We then crafted a three-sentence mission statement and shared it with club stakeholders at a preseason meeting. The mission statement was adopted by the club and guides the direction of the club and its members. Importantly, our work highlights a novel technique, informed by a range of stakeholder perceptions and experiences, that can be used to craft an organizational mission statement in elite youth sport.

How Intervention Research Designs May Broaden the Research-to-Practice Gap in Sport Psychology 干预研究设计如何扩大运动心理学的研究与实践差距

Abstract Sport-based interventions are often highly systematic and follow rigorous procedures. While these components provide value for researchers hoping to advance knowledge, practitioners may find it difficult to replicate or implement such interventions in the real world. Many published intervention studies either under-report or provide overly complex methodology, and thus, intervention researchers may be inadvertently widening the research-to-practice gap in sport psychology. Using a recent applied imagery intervention as an exemplar, methodological components that were either under-reported or overly complex are discussed and re-presented as practical recommendations for practitioners. Future recommendations are also provided with the hope of narrowing the research-to-practice gap.

Abstract This article offers insight about the creation and implementation of a self-directed online tool called Project SCORE (www.projectscore.ca) which aims to help coaches and parents foster positive youth development through sport. More specifically, in this paper we describe (a) how Project SCORE was created, (b) its evolution to enable better developmental outcomes across diverse socio-cultural contexts, (c) the lessons learned throughout the delivery of Project SCORE, and (d) future pathways for researchers, coaches, parents and other stakeholders interested in implementing Project SCORE.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce sport psychology faculty to a nontraditional learning activity or assessment, the “epic finale.” An epic finale is a final, memorable learning experience that motivates students to continue thinking about material after the class is concluded and leaves students with a positive experience of the course and the content. The epic finale engages students in the learning process and can be an effective conclusion to the semester. Multiple examples of epic finales will be presented, including a movie analysis, escape room, and scavenger hunt.
