Abstract Although the cancer role is becoming increasingly studied within sports psychology research, there is a dearth of applied interventions for improving the negative consequences caused by the cancer role. Using insights from a previous pilot project drawing on Canadian interuniversity athletes’ stories of a staff cancer and recommendations from athlete maltreatment literature, we provide MPCs with varying degrees of proactive interventions to empower coaches to modify their own behaviors to signify growth in their coaching practices and reactive interventions to be used if a cancer’s influence is adversely impacting athletes.

Abstract The authors operated in professional roles related to preparations for Tokyo 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world. The purpose of this article is to share applied experiences and reflections from different parts of the world of psychological challenges and support strategies adopted in elite sports during the first phase of the pandemic (i.e., March to August 2020). Common themes included motivational issues, stress and anxiety, loss of routine, life-balance challenges among athletes, but also benefits of extended preparation time and recovery. Variations in support strategies and consequences from the effects of COVID-19 occurred across countries.

Abstract Bloom et al. (2020) advocated that mental performance consultants (MPCs) can play an important supporting role in the psychosocial recovery and well-being of concussed athletes. The rapid advancement of knowledge and limited resources designed for MPCs present challenges in facilitating this support. To address these challenges, a group of MPCs formed a community of practice to help define our role in this domain. In this article, we have attempted to translate our knowledge of concussion and related psychosocial support into an accessible narrative and approach that can help MPCs better understand our role in providing support to concussed athletes throughout the phases of return-to-play.

Abstract Perceptual-cognitive-motor skills, such as visual anticipation, are pivotal for superior performance in sport. However, there are only a limited number of skill acquisition specialists working with coaches to develop these skills in athletes. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief reflection on the use of psychological strategies to create an autonomy-supportive environment to embed a skill acquisition research project in high-performance sport. The research project was conducted with the Australian national field hockey high-performance unit and investigated individual differences in expert goalkeepers’ visual anticipation. The paper first discusses the role of a skill acquisition specialist, how they collaborate with coaches and athletes, and barriers to collaboration. The paper then outlines how psychological strategies can be used to create an autonomy-supportive environment to build a relationship and establish a research collaboration with a team. Further, the paper discusses the importance of continually involving coaches and athletes in the research process to facilitate their engagement and self-determined motivation to complete the project. By applying psychological strategies to create an autonomy-supportive environment, sports scientists may have greater success in overcoming the many barriers to conduct research in an elite sport setting, with the outcomes highly valuable for athlete development.

Recommendations for Combining Action Observation and Motor Imagery Interventions in Sport 运动中动作观察与运动意象干预相结合的建议

Abstract Combined action observation and motor imagery (AOMI) interventions involve observing a movement demonstration, usually via video, whilst at the same time imagining the feelings and sensations involved in executing the observed action. Research findings indicate that AOMI interventions can be effective for improving sport performance, yet no guidelines currently exist within the literature to inform applied sport psychologists how to develop and implement AOMI interventions with athletes. The aim of this article is to address this gap in the applied sport psychology literature. Accordingly, the article provides an overview of the ‘Science of AOMI’ by discussing the neurophysiological, cognitive, psychological and performance effects of AOMI interventions to introduce the concept of AOMI and potential benefits of AOMI interventions in sport. The article then covers the ‘Practice of AOMI’ by discussing practical recommendations for applied sport psychologists on how to develop and implement AOMI interventions for performance enhancement purposes. Important considerations related to filming the action observation video are discussed, such as selection of the model and choice of visual perspective. Guidelines are then provided for developing and delivering personalized kinesthetic imagery instructions for use by the athlete in synchrony with action observation.

The Use of Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) Approach For Malaysian Elite Triathletes 正念接纳承诺(MAC)方法在马来西亚精英铁人三项运动员中的应用

Abstract Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) approach has been introduced into the sport psychology field and has shown a lot of interest in the applied practices. Athletes who receive MAC approach are taught to deal with challenging internal experiences in a non-judgmental way, choosing to persist with their task-at-hand despite discomforts and to remain focused on being grounded at the present moment. In Malaysia, the elite triathletes have not been exposed to the MAC approach before. This paper aims to describe how the MAC approach was provided to the Malaysian elite triathletes. MAC was taught over six weeks, with one MAC theme introduced per week. Each triathlete was given a one-on-one session of 60-90 minutes per week with homework and practical exercises. After six weeks, the triathletes reported marked improvement in their sport and additional improvements in other domains of their life. Considering the promising improvements of the elite triathletes who received the MAC approach, it is worth considering that the MAC approach should be adapted and incorporated into the triathlon sport.

Creating an Optimal Motivational Team Climate to Help Collegiate Athletes Thrive during the COVID-19 Pandemic 创造最佳的激励团队氛围,帮助大学运动员在COVID-19大流行期间茁壮成长

Abstract College athletes’ lives have been upended due to the sudden impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In spring 2020, athletes lost their competition seasons, face-to-face contact with their coaches and teammates, access to their training facilities and equipment, and faced additional struggles specific to the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., financial, health concerns). The purpose of this paper is to outline strategies coaches can employ to create a caring and task-involving climate on their teams to help athletes thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic. The strategies came from a research study conducted to assess the responses of coaches and teammates that athletes perceived to be supportive during the COVID-19 pandemic.
