Abstract Sport consultants (SPCs) are continuing to fulfill needs within the sport community. This paper addresses the unique dilemma that SPCs face when athletes offer gifts; the decision to accept or decline can cause unexpected distress within dual relationships. Those who practice in collectivist settings are asked to focus on the impact of both the group and the individual; specifically, these stakeholders in sport interact with coaches, athletes, and parents routinely and are asked to grapple with both their ethical duty and their own role within their respective agency. This paper examines current literature surrounding gifts in therapy, its potential impact on sport, and an ethical decision-making model is applied for those who serve this population.

Abstract Researchers have been increasingly interested in exploring how coaches can be best supported to explicitly teach life skills through sport. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the process of developing the Life Skills Self-Assessment Tool for Coaches. The tool represents a knowledge product designed for practical use on the ground, anchored in theory and backed by empirical support. The tool is available in four languages and accompanied by a “how-to” video, thereby enabling more coaches from around the world to teach life skills through sport.

Abstract Many sport-based youth development (SBYD) programs assume that short-term changes in participant attitudes, knowledge, and intentions will lead to long-term behavior change. However, this does not automatically occur, leading to questions about the efficacy and longevity of outcomes from SBYD programs. This paper discusses innovative solutions from the field of behavioral economics, which SBYD programs could use to support and promote individual behavior change. Nine tools for behavior change are outlined within a MINDSPACE (Messenger, Incentives, Norms, Defaults, Salience, Priming, Affect, Commitment, and Ego) model, with a specific focus on how SBYD programs can use these tools to promote positive youth development.

Abstract Elite athletic career termination is inevitable in high performance sport. Whether due to interest, injury, age or combination of factors, athletes will undergo a shift in their professional and personal identity. While retirement out of sport has been scrutinized to both understand and support athletes, we have not thought through what the athlete-to-coach, within-sport retirement, signifies for the person undergoing it and for our applied practice and lack the approach(es) for supporting it. Based on recent research advances, we build on a range of resources to be developed in supporting athletes during the transition and in the coaching profession.

Abstract Mental rest appears critical to sustained high performance in sports and other human performance contexts. We draw on the developing science of mental rest to provide a useful guide for practitioners about how athletes and other performers can obtain the mental rest they need. We describe why mental rest is important for recovery and skill learning in athletes and how athletes obtain mental rest by engaging in sleep and resting while awake, known as wakeful resting. We also provide strategies that enable athletes to obtain more sleep and wakeful resting, and present tools for monitoring athletes’ mental rest.

Abstract Drawing on the growing body of resilience research in elite sport, and the evaluation of the applied impact of this research with various national and international athletes and teams, the purpose of this article is to discuss the development of individual and team resilience with practical recommendations provided for athletes, coaches, and sport psychology practitioners operating in elite sport. Four overarching practical recommendations are provided to aid the development of individual resilience: ensure clarity of what resilience is and is not, enhance and refine personal qualities, evoke and maintain a challenge mindset, and create a facilitative environment. Furthermore, five psychosocial processes are outlined and practical recommendations are provided to develop team resilience: Transformational leadership, shared leadership, social identity, team learning, and team enjoyment and positive emotions. We hope that this article will help bridge the gap between research and practice in this area.

Lessons Learned from a Multi-Level Intervention Program to Reduce Swedish Female Floorballers’ Dropout Rate 多层次干预降低瑞典女子地板运动员辍学率的经验教训

Abstract The purpose of this paper was to describe the development, implementation and outcomes of an intervention program designed to reduce female youth floorballers’ (13–18 years) dropout rate over a 2-year period. A strategy, based on a multi-level approach and empirically validated theories of motivation was used in developing and implementing the intervention. Various measures were implemented which may have contributed to the reduction of dropouts. These included: changes to the targeted club policy; hiring a coach responsible for youth sport; forming a youth sport committee and a youth sport group; recruiting a liaison officer who acted as a communication link between various teams, coaches, athletes and the parents; and carrying out an ongoing education program for key stakeholders (i.e., coaches, parents and athletes).

Abstract Deliberate practice is a popular concept in sport and performance domains. Performers and practitioners in these domains are eager to understand and use deliberate practice to improve their performance, but there are no easily accessible guides available to help explain how to apply the concept. We provide such a guide. Our guide includes four key concepts for understanding deliberate practice, seven principles for applying this concept, and four common pitfalls to avoid when dealing with deliberate practice. Examples are provided to aid understanding and application for performers seeking to improve technical and mental skills, as well as consultants attempting to enhance professional skills.

Abstract The rapid growth in forms of technology used within society presents the field of sport and exercise psychology with numerous opportunities and considerations. Nevertheless, there currently exists a scarcity of knowledge or research for sport psychology professionals (SPPs) to draw from when seeking to use technology and media in their service delivery. This article presents a commentary on the perceived opportunities and considerations drawing primarily from the online counseling literature and we offer recommendations for good practice for SPPs utilizing technology and media in service delivery.
