This essay studies the freethinking pact signed by Spanish writers Rosario de Acuna and Angeles Lopez de Ayala. Their contributions to the freethinking press and their feminist activism are examined through analysis of their collaborations in the publications Las dominicales del librepensamiento, El gladiador: organo de la “Sociedad progresiva femenina”, and El gladiador del librepensamiento. The ideology of these publications allowed them to connect their feminism to the political agenda of progressive thought. Two complementary axes are taken into consideration, as this intersection illuminates their pact on commitment and transgression: the fights for social and gender equality. The article explores their thoughts about the exploitation of workers by the castes, the empowerment of women as agents of progress and strong condemnation of their subjugation. In conclusion, their writings show a progressive radicalization that informs a combative feminist approach that reflected their discontent with the paternalist or hostile attitude of patriarchal freethinking and male republicanism on the topic of women’s rights.

This paper introduces a dossier that focuses on the relationships between commitment and transgression, in contemporary Spain, from a gender point of view. With contributions from the fields of History, Literature, Communication, Sociology and Philosophy, it seeks to question traditional hierarchies often established on the bases of ideals and experiences of women and men in progressive political cultures or countercultural spheres. Moreover, it demonstrates that transgression arises in intellectual, political, social or feminist activism by subverting gender rules and promoting equality, although it can also involve tensions and paradoxes.

The transgression resulting from the association of violence with women is revealed in the political and mediatic treatment that women of ETA have received, often associated with a perverted femininity. This article analyses the identification of the female ETA body with a sexuality divergent from nationalist normative models. It explores the conflictive relationship of women with violence and the political figures and leadership of Yoyes and Idoia Lopez Riano. In the first case, the article analyses the transgression represented by the unassimilable presence of an ETA leader after her abandonment of terrorist activity and after motherhood. In the second, it explores Lopez Riano’s representation and the political and mediatic negotiations of her identity. If Yoyes occupies a symbolic space in the Basque political imagination, Lopez Riano is a living testimony in the process of this female militancy in ETA.

The present study explores crimes committed by women during the final years of the Restoration and the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera in Spain. The authors also analyse the space–discourse dichotomy of these actions, committed in the private sphere but quickly extrapolated to the public arena for sensationalist ends. Press cuttings, literary extracts and court rulings provide the sources for this study, which aims to examine in depth this blurred dividing line of dialectic action. Against the precepts defined by the prevailing discourse on the “female sex”, which pigeonholed women into the conceived notion of permanent weakness, beauty and lethargy, the transgression at the heart of the private sphere will be made public, showing that the fabricated idealisations of women had little to do with reality.

The aim of this paper is to explore the different ways transgressive cultural expressions emerged in the late seventies and eighties in Spain, and their impact on gender stereotypes. From libertarian attitudes, the overcoming of superwoman as a model for the emancipated woman, to new methods of parenthood known as attachment parenting introduced in the late eighties, transgression has several manifestations during this period in which Spanish women scrambled to overcome the traditional model imposed by Francoism. In this context, transgression was manifested as a superficial phenomenon inherent to the socio-political moment and devoid of any protest content.

From the perspective of the «sociology of space», this study will explore the connections that exist between ideological factors (paradigms of representation of childbirth), systems of clinical organization (cultures of childbirth) and architectural developments (spatial typologies of birthing rooms), and their repercussions in terms of humanising care. To this end, a twenty-four-month ethnographic investigation was carried out in six birthing rooms of the state health service in a region of southern Spain. The research technique was participant observation, accumulating a total of three hundred and twenty-four hours of analysis. The results show how architectural arrangements are closely linked to pre-existing obstetric paradigms and cultures, tending from a technocratic perspective, organically, toward a fragmentation of the healthcare space that dehumanises the process, and from holistic-humanistic worldviews, in terms of a continuum, toward a space-care reintegration that contributes to humanisation.

EnglishEven today in the history of Cuban anthropology, little attention is paid to the writer and anthropologist Lydia Cabrera, who has only recently begun to be part of the list of intellectuals in official Cuban culture. However, because of her work and life trajectory, Cabrera can be considered the modern founder of studies on Afro-Cuban religions. The main purpose of this text is to analyse Lydia Cabrera’s ethnographic work based on the idea that there was a ‘counterpoint’, a dialogue, a metaphorical game, between the liminal identity of the author herself – manifested in a racial, cultural, gender, social and political sense – and her interest and dedication to the contribution of slaves and the population of African origin to the history, culture and, ultimately, the identity of their Cuban homeland.

This paper looks to shape the construction of the character Regina Lamo, until now presented as subordinate to other lives that have more historical relevance than hers. Among other types of activism, Lamo became an opinion leader and the creator of a school in the field of cooperativism as the most effective way to fight against the exploitation of the labour movement in the first decades of the twentieth century in Spain. The serious situation of social conflict experienced in the first decades of the century in the context of the modernization of Spain, and in particular in Catalonia, along with the rise of the labour movement, caused strong repression of the main force, anarcho-syndicalism. A space was thus opened for the mutualists, who were looking for a gradual and peaceful erosion of capitalism and were in favour of the social economy, in opposition to the Bakuninists, prone to militant struggle, the general strike and insurrection. In this context, Regina Lamo defined her commitment with an original proposal for the creation of Popular Credit Banks, which singled out her position, one that today we look to reclaim as a transgressor of gender boundaries.

This article focuses on the political biographies of two sisters, Claudina and Luz Garcia Perez, between 1918 and 1931 within the Agrupacion Femenina Socialista de Madrid (Women’s Socialist Group of Madrid) and various trade unions linked to the Casa del Pueblo. Their biographies question the stereotype of the male union and political leader by highlighting the importance of the family unit in adopting and maintaining a lifelong commitment to the socialist cause. Moreover, their transgression of the hegemonic gender system highlights the role played by women-only political fora in relation to the formation of female political leaders within regimes in which women were deprived of the right to vote.
