For the leaders of the May ‘68 revolt in Paris, Charles de Gaulle became the embodiment of the politics they hoped to overthrow. The complete failure of his televised address to the nation on May 24 seemed to ratify his downfall, and even the potential demise of the Fifth Republic he had brought into existence. His actions in the following days, until May 30, completely turned the situation around: the political deadlock was loosened, the social crisis was defused, and student unrest began to die out. The results of the general election he called the following June gave to his party the greatest margin of majority in its history. During this process, however, some events are still mysterious and a source of debate among historians. Of these, the best-known was his lightning trip to the French military base in Baden-Baden (Germany) on May 29. We analyze the main interpretations provided to explain what happened.

In this article we analyze three central issues raised in 1968 and still under consideration today: the who (the subject), the which (the contents) and the how (the means) for the transformative socio-political action. Issues not born in that time, but raised then in terms that have survived to the present day.

Spin-off companies are amongst the multiple devices available to universities to commercialise and transfer the scientific knowledge they generate. They form part of the fundamental substratum for the innovative process driven by the needs of the capital cities in the most developed economies. Moreover, these can also attract the attention of the mass media, which occasionally transforms the activity of these unusual companies into an object of newsworthiness. The main purpose of this research is to analyse and compare the media focus received by Based-Technology Companies from two of the most prolific universities developing spin-off entities: the University of Granada and the Polytechnic University of Madrid. In this way, an attempt is made to penetrate the media-built portrayal of this output of technoscientific performance and, along this process, to study the knowledge transfer model used by public-financed scientific institutions.

This article focuses on how different historians have participated in the debates on the meaning, origins and context of the term globalization. As a concept, it has come to be distorted and even questioned, after having been abused both by academics and the public. Historians have adapted to the semantic changes of the term over time. Globalization has served to recover long-term perspectives as well as multi-causal and deterministic approaches. Nonetheless, some recent contributions have not only integrated globalization into the historical narrative, but have also helped outline its meaning and scope.

May 1968, more than a debate between memory and history, is a debate between myth and critique. Le mai francais has been a continuous resource of debate and proliferation of ideas, and for this reason the recent position related to the official account or consensus on its significance, fabricated out of the commemorations, lacks plausibility. Starting with the double outburst of word and action (performance) which brought with it the movement, this paper takes into account the role played by the intellectuals in sixty-eight, before and after the May-June epicentre. From this perspective, it will be easier to determine the extent to which the intellectual debate maintained by the commemorative ritual either resulted in a separate ideology or thinking of the movement, which blurred the edges of its main contexts. By contrast, one could also conclude by supporting the present legacy of the 68th, quintessential to its memory.

José Andrés-Gallego
The author asks whether there was a “scientific ‘68”, and focuses on aspects of two specific methodological proposals defined in the 1940s and 50s by the terms “action research” and “mixing methods”, applied particularly to social sciences. In the first, the climate surrounding the events of 1968 contributed to heightening the participative element to be found –by definition– in “action research”; that is: the importance of making the research subjects themselves participants in the design, execution and application of the study of which they are the focus. This approach captured the democratic and anti-authoritarian spirit at the heart of the proposal, which was part of the prevailing climate in those days. The repercussions of 1968 on “mixing methods” focused on studying what had actually occurred, especially between the youth and workers, and therefore, particularly from the point of view of sociology and social psychology, using a “mixed methods” approach. The author explores the proposal of Norman Denzin; but traces the recent origins of both “mixing methods” and “action research” back to the proposals of mainly Kurt Lewin and the Chicago School.

The anthropological understanding of the events that took place during May’68, in the context of the historical changes of the second half of the twentieth century, requires, on the one hand, an archaeological study of the emergence of a new historical and metaphysical subject, youth, and, on the other hand, a study of the appearance of a new morphology of the conscience, joviality.

Protest is not randomly distributed over time but concentrates in the form of cycles. The last three major international cycles of protest have been those surrounding 1968, the global justice movement at the turn of the millennium and the recent mobilization for democracy and against austerity from 2010. This article analyzes the continuities between these protest cycles, focusing on the cultural impact of social movements through the development and diffusion of new concepts of democracy.

The main aim of this article is to highlight the political and theoretical nature of Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive philosophy, dissociating it from a simple identification with criticism derived from Ferry and Renaut’s book, which by no means do justice to a much sustained attempt through time to promote change, reflection and innovation in the most diverse political and social fronts.
