Translanguaging: a pedagogical concept that went wandering 译语:一个迷失方向的教学概念

ABSTRACT The term translanguaging goes back more than a quarter-century, originating in the domain of the teaching of Welsh, but it has over the years developed a wide variety of usages. While translanguaging is claimed to have advantages over other language education models, many of its new interpretations, which take it some distance from its original pedagogical sense, are seen by some as problematic. The new conceptualizations go beyond the pedagogical practice of drawing on multiple language varieties in order to facilitate learning; they, indeed, often extend to general, overarching accounts of language deployment among multilinguals, which sometimes do not differentiate between individual language competencies. Proponents of translanguaging in its more traditional sense point to pedagogical advantages and opportunities it presents in the (language) classroom. Even in this context, however, there is debate about the appropriateness of utilizing translanguaging in, for example, minority language maintenance contexts. In this article, we explore the variety of uses of the term translanguaging and the attendant claims attached to them. Our conclusion is that the critical factor in the capacity of the term to retain coherence and intelligibility is the maintenance of constant awareness of and attention to the perspective in which it is applied.

Moving away from the 4-hour block: Arizona’s distinctive path to reversing its restrictive language policies 摆脱4小时封锁:亚利桑那州扭转限制性语言政策的独特途径

ABSTRACT In spring 2019, without controversy or fanfare and without violating the voter mandate of Proposition 203, emergent bilinguals in Arizona were once again granted unrestricted access to dual language bilingual education after nearly 20 years. The policy change was accomplished through a seemingly small piece of legislation that reduced the daily Structured English Immersion requirement from four hours to two hours. In this study, we analyze the Senate and House education committee hearings in which this legislation was unanimously approved before being signed into law by the governor. Using critical discourse analysis and through a theoretical lens of interest convergence, we examine the strategic moves utilized by speakers and legislators to build consensus for this remarkable, yet overlooked, legislation. We found that, in contrast to policy reforms in California and Massachusetts, which used a “multilingualism-for-all” strategy, the speakers and legislators in Arizona focused on English learners. Yet, they worked to show that a change benefitting English learners would also benefit parents, schools, teachers, districts, and even the state of Arizona. Our findings suggest that advocacy for bilingual education that is informed by contextual awareness and translated into the local discourse can produce success, even in conservative contexts such as Arizona.

Learning about English learners: teachers’ and leaders’ perceptions of effective professional development 关于英语学习者的学习:教师和领导者对有效专业发展的看法

ABSTRACT Shortcomings in schools’ efforts to serve English learners (ELs) are often both a function of the continuing scarcity of teacher education and the ability of schools to implement high-quality professional development (PD) to successfully prepare effective teachers for this marginalized student population. Scant literature addresses the processes for initiating EL-focused PD, as well as the effectiveness of PD at the school-wide level. In this study, survey data collected from designing and delivering PD were examined to ascertain what makes for effective PD with respect to teaching ELs. Results of this multi-phase study suggest that educators are looking for not only how they can assess and accommodate the learning needs of ELs but also how to better support the larger contexts in which they learn. Additional findings included the need for learning specific types of strategies, conceptual frameworks, and interventions to help ELs learn both literacy, as well as in specific content areas. Implications for designing and evaluating EL-focused PD are discussed.

Perceptions of access to dual language education programs: the complexities of equity 对获得双语教育项目的看法:公平的复杂性

ABSTRACT This study explores access to Spanish dual-language education (DLE) programs via the perceptions of various stakeholders, including district personnel, school administrators, and parents at two public DLE elementary schools in a large mid-Atlantic metropolitan district in the United States. Through a lens of equity, this comparative case study relied on semi-structured interviews to demonstrate how equity is interpreted differently by stakeholders and why parents may not have access to an academic resource that was originally intended as a service-delivery model for Spanish-speaking students acquiring English. This study divides the findings into four main themes: equitable access versus equity of access, systemic equity, unregulated systemic equity, and choice and access to show how systems and policies created to promote equity may be the same ones that hinder its ability to advance.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan fokus kajian prosodi melalui pendekatan fonetik eksperimental. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan prosodi dalam hal ini struktur melodic dan struktur temporal yang dilafalkan oleh penutur Jepang dan Australia ketika berbicara dalam bahasa Indonesia serta menemukan formula pengajaran pengucapan bahasa Indonesia untuk penutur asing. Objek dalam penelitian ini adalah ujaran deklaratif dan interogatif yang dituturkan oleh mahasiswa program Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) di Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Indonesia. Dalam kajian ini, peneliti, mendeskripsikan seperti apa struktur melodik (nada dan tekanan)  dan struktur temporal dalam ujaran deklaratif dan interogatif oleh penutur Jepang dan Australia. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan struktur melodic dan struktur temporal antara ujaran deklaratif dan interogatif oleh penutur Asutralia dan Jepang. Penutur Jepang dalam hal intonasi lebih mendekati dengan pola intonasi kalimat deklaratif bahasa Indonesia, dibandingkan dengan penutur dari Australia. Sementara itu, intonasi dalam menuturkan kalimat interogatif, baik penutur dari Jepang maupun dari Australia belum bisa mendekati pola intonasi kalimat interogatif bahasa Indonesia. Dalam hal durasi, dapat dikatakan bahwa penutur Australia memiliki durasi yang lebih panjang ketika menuturkan kalimat introgatif dibandingkan dengan penutur dari Jepang.Kata Kunci: tuturan, deklaratif, interogatif, prosodi, struktur melodik, struktur temporal, fonetik eksperimental

The changes of affixation morphology have a number of effects on  the changes of sentence structure (syntax) in Mandailing language. The process of changes can also lead to a change in meaning directly. The objective of the research was to find out morphological change of affixes which  effected the changing of sentences structures (syntax) in Mandailing language. The method  which is used to carry out this research is qualitative research method. The type of research approach which is  used in this research is descriptive qualitative research, which is one type of qualitative research that uses a descriptive analysis process. Descriptive is intended to describe and get information about the data needed precisely. The data were collected by using observation and interview. The source of data in this research was taken from many informant of native speakers of Mandailing   language which had been  listened and interviewed by the researcher whether in the form of observation and interview. The research result of the research was finding many affixes in Mandailing language and three formula that was generally effected morphological change of affixes which was also effect the sentence structures and meaning of the sentences. They were ma + kt. dasar, ma + kt.dasar + i, ma + kt.dasar + kon/hon.

The method  which is used to carry out this research is qualitative research method. The type of research approach which is  used in this research is descriptive qualitative research, which is one type of qualitative research that uses a descriptive analysis process. Descriptive is intended to describe and get information about the data needed precisely. The data were collected by using observation and interview. The source of data in this research was taken from many informant of native speakers of Mandailing   language which had been  listened and interviewed by the researcher whether in the form of observation and interview. The research result of the research was finding many affixes in Mandailing language and three formula that was generally effected morphological change of affixes which was also effect the sentence structures and meaning of the sentences. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kohesi gramatikal referensi  dalam cerpen Perempuan Bermata Tersenyum Itu Telah Pergi karya Fuad Sulistyono. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif. Objek yang diteliti adalah kohesi gramatikal referensi dalam cerpen Perempuan Bermata Tersenyum Itu Telah Pergi karya Fuad Sulistyono. Data penelitian ini berupa kutipan-kutipan dalam cerpen Perempuan Bermata Tersenyum Itu Telah Pergi karya Fuad Sulistyono yang mengandung kohesi gramatikal referensi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dengan mencatat dan menguraikan data dalam bentuk kata-kata. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dalam cerpen Perempuan Bermata Tersenyum Itu Telah Pergi dapat disimpulkan bahwa jenis referensi yang terdapat dalam cerita pendek berjumlah 129. Jenis referensi tersebut adalah: (1) Referensi persona yang berjumlah 104 dengan persentase 81%. (2) Referensi demonstratif yang berjumlah 20 dengan persentase 15%. (3) Referensi komparatif yang berjumlah 5 dengan persentase 4%. Dilihat dari persentase jumlah penggunaan frasa endosentris yang sering muncul maka dapat dilihat bahwa dalam cerpen Perempuan Bermata Tersenyum Itu Telah Pergi yang sering digunakan adalah referensi persona. Referensi persona adalah penggunaan pronomina yang memang biasa digunakan dalam karya sastra bentuk cerpen, sedangkan referensi komparatif sangat jarang ditemukan.Kata Kunci: kohesi gramatikal referensi, persona, demonstratif, komparatif

Surabaya merupakan kota dengan mobilitas yang tinggi. Hal tersebut menyebabkan Surabaya lekat dengan kehadiran pasar, baik modern maupun tradisional. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan identitas Surabaya melalui penamaan pasar tradisional, karena nama-nama tersebut tampak sebagai pemandangan kota. Pemerolehan data pada penenelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengkases situs resmi PD Pasar Surya Surabaya. Data diolah dengan menjabarkan masing-masing unsur penyusunnya. Selanjutnya, data dianalisis berdasarkan pemilihan kosakata. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penamaan pasar tradisional tersusun dari Unsur Generik dan Unsur Spesifik. Kuantitas kehadiran Unsur Generik dan Unsur Spesifik bervariasi. Beberapa pasar tradisional memiliki satu Unsur Spesifik. Namun, ditemukan juga pasar tradisonal yang menyematkan dua Unsur Spesifik. Hal ini dilakukan untuk memberikan pembeda dengan tempat yang telah ada sebelumnya. Sementera itu, penamaan pasar tradisional kerap menggunakan kosakata yang merefleksikan nama daerah letak pasar tersebut. Selain itu, kosakata pada Unsur Spesifik ditemukan juga sebagai penjelasan spesifikasi sifat dan arah pasar tersebut.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis wacana pemberitaan izin investasi industri minuman keras pada media daring CNN Indonesia. Sumber data penelitian berasal dari teks berita daring CNN Indonesia yang direpresentasikan dengan wujud kata-kata dan kalimat pada teks berita dalam portal berita bersangkutan. Data dibatasi dari pemberitaan pada tanggal 25 Februari sampai 28 Februai 2021. Menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan kritis melalui teori analisis wacana kritis (AWK). Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak bebas libat cakap, metode catat, metode studi pustaka, dan metode dokumentasi. Hasil studi menunjukkan temuan berupa representasi aktor yang ditunjukkan melalui (1) kosakata yang terdiri dari asosiasi dan metafora, (2) tata bahasa yang terdiri dari proses dan partisipasi, dan (3) kombinasi klausa. Penelitian ini memberikan manfaat pada perkembangan keilmuan umunya pada bidang linguistik, khususnya bidang analisis wacana kritis.

AbstrakTema syair yang diciptakan oleh Sis Al-Djufri pada umumnya bersifat ajakan dan seruan yang berkarakterkan pendidikan secara Islami. Hal tersebut diungkapkan untuk  memberikan pendidikan yang berkarakterkan Agama Islam kepada masyarakat Sulawesi Tengah. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan nilai pendidikan yang berkarakter Islam dalam syair-syair Sis AJ.  Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini disesuaikan dengan tahapan  penelitian pengumpulan data dan penganalisisan data. Pada tahap pengumpulan data  metode yang digunakan adalah studi kepustakaan (library research) dengan teknik dasar pembacaan  dan akan dilanjutkan dengan teknik pencatatan. Berdasarkan metode tersebut, jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif kepustakaan dengan menggunakan strategi deskriptif analisis (descriptif  of analyze research).  Hasil analisis menunjukkan  bahwa bahwa nilai-nilai pendidikan yang berkarakter  religius dalam syair-syair Sis Aj meliputi nilai  akidah, nilai akhlak, dan nilai syariah.
