ABSTRACT This article explores the disparities that exist between the original English versions and the translated Chinese versions of Patrick Hurley’s ‘Five-Point Proposal’ and argues that by studying additional primary sources, these differences can reveal insights into the political manoeuvring of both parties on the verge of the Cold War and their efforts to mould their own historical accounts. By analysing all available versions of the proposal, the article examines two primary sets of textual discrepancies and their potential implications for interpreting the motives of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The analysis emphasises the importance of taking into account the translation process and the translators’ contributions to creating these disparities.

ABSTRACT This article examines the engagement of North Korea in the Eurocurrency market in the 1970s. In the Cold War regime competition for economic prosperity, the communist regime turned to the City of London to raise capital for economic development. Despite the diplomatic efforts of South Korea against its rival, the judges were international banks. The failure to manage its indebtedness resulted in the retreat of the North in the Western financial market. Lost creditworthiness was hard to restore. The divergence in the access to foreign capital resulted in the different paths of economic growth of the two Koreas.

ABSTRACT Using opinion poll data collected for the United States Information Agency, the European Commission and various media organisations, this article analyses British public opinion towards German reunification in 1989 and 1990. Contrasting the public’s views with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s hostile approach towards German unity, it demonstrates that the British public were largely supportive of the principle of German reunification. Nevertheless, there was uncertainty about reunification’s consequences. Furthermore, significant generational differences existed, with Britons who experienced life during periods of war in the first half of the twentieth century expressing greater concern about the prospect of a united Germany.

In 2010, the publication of Samuel Moyn’s The Last Utopia1 took a wrecking ball to the well-established narrative of the global history of human rights – a story of constant progress from the US Declaration of Independence (1776) and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789) to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Moyn’s revisionist account centred on the thesis that human rights only emerged as the dominant aspirational framework in the 1970s. They broke through, he argued, only after other utopias failed, like that of self-determination embraced by the anti-colonial actors of previous decades.
