ABSTRACT This article extends generational literature by investigating the self-perceptions of U.K. based Millennials on how they formed their career-identities within intra- and inter-generational interactions (n = 36). Thematic analysis of interviews indicated that participants engaged in personal identification more than generational identification, interacting with both contemporaneous and older generations to co-produce and role model their career-identities. These findings challenge normative readings of sociological perspectives on generations which emphasize divergence and weakening ties between generations. Rather, findings suggest that an integrative framework provides a more appropriate theoretical lens for conceptualizing generational career-identities, incorporating kinship perspectives on interactive relationships within and across generations.

ABSTRACT There has been no research in Pakistan about how to improve quality of life (QOL) of aging populations through intergenerational learning. In this study we aimed to deliver an intervention for intergenerational learning to assess the impact on QOL through a quasi-experiment research design. We also aimed to identify which types of intergenerational learning activities improve QOL and how the activities may be improved. We gained permission to deliver the intervention from a state-run old age center in Punjab. Though the intervention started with 42 participants, we were left with 18 participants at the end of the three-month intervention. The results show posttest improvement in: (i) sleep (t = 3.01, p < .05), (ii) life enjoyment (t = 2.26, p < .05), and (iii) psychological health (t = 2.04, p = .05). In addition, participants with more education exhibited significant improvement in QOL after the intervention. We were also able to compile a list of 19 suggestions by participants for overall changes in learning activities, changes in specific interventions delivered, and suggestions for more types of interventions. We conclude that intergenerational learning improves QOL, and recommend suggestions for life satisfaction, and the planning of old age home centers. This study has implications for aging policy across developing and South Asian populations.

ABSTRACT This study explored the complex ways in which grandparent support, collectivism, and cultural orientations predict parenting stress in Chinese immigrant families in the United States. In particular, the focus was on understanding whether cultural values and orientations moderated the impact of grandparent support on parenting stress. The sample for this study included 256 Chinese immigrant mothers with children under age 5 living in the United States. The surveys were administered via online modalities. The results of the research indicated that both grandparent support and collectivism uniquely predicted decreased parenting stress. In addition, collectivism and Chinese cultural orientation moderated the association between grandparent support and mothers’ parenting stress, such that the association between grandparent support and parenting stress was stronger for those mothers with high collectivism and stronger Chinese cultural orientation. These results provide a unique perspective on understanding individual variations in kin support for this population of mothers and point to specific family contexts in which grandparental care may be particularly beneficial as an intergenerational support system.

ABSTRACT The accelerated pace of digital innovations represents a challenge to some individuals, particularly for older people with low digital skills. Several studies focused on information and communication technologies (ICTs) education programs in institutional settings, yet the provision of informal support in the family context is a critical element in the digital literacy of older people. This study examines the familial intergenerational dynamics that facilitate or hinder the digital literacy of grandmothers and carries out a comparison in different cultural contexts. Focus groups were conducted with grandmothers aged 65 and over in Colombia, Italy, Peru, Romania and Spain, followed by thematic analysis. The results show that the grandmothers involved in the study acquire new digital skills through explicit and non-explicit learning dynamics. Grandmothers first resort to their children and grandchildren for explicit requirements, although facing various emotional and attitudinal challenges that hamper this learning. Otherwise, non-explicit learning dynamics emerge in their everyday interaction with offspring and include enactive, immersive, vicarious, and collaborative learning. Thus, intergenerational dynamics are key for grandmothers to keep updated with the continuous flux of innovations. Moreover, the explicit and non-explicit dynamics described should be considered in policies related to digital literacy of older women.

ABSTRACT Faith-based organizations offer an opportunity for intergenerational relationships. Two of the major barriers in initiating these relationships include (a) providing a structured environment for individuals to first communicate and (b) overcoming the initial anxiety of interacting with someone from a different generation. This paper describes the design and implementation of Women Empowering Wellness (WEW), a faith-based intergenerational program. WEW allows college-age females and older women to interact in a structured environment for eight-weeks. Several benefits were observed including formed relationships/sisterhood, personal sharing/open dialogue/vulnerability, and learning about the other generation. Given the testimonies of participants, WEW was beneficial, enjoyable, and meaningful to both younger and older women and has the potential to be implemented in other faith-based organizations.

ABSTRACT With the aging population, there is a need to develop intergenerational activities to promoting healthy aging. “Age XXL” was an intergenerational project in Portugal where older adults attending an institution providing social care and support services for this population exchanged correspondences with children, taught history and citizenship classes in schools and jails, and helped realize the dreams of other elderly people. The aim of this study was to identify the preliminary phases of the design of the intervention project, the activities developed, and the assessment of its social impact. Results show a better perception among the participants regarding their skills and contributions, enabling them to understand and recognize their importance in society.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to analyze the legacies that great-grandparents transmit to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from the perspective of each generation. For this purpose, a qualitative research of multiple case studies with five multigenerational families was conducted, totaling 22 participants. As research instrument, a semi-directed interview was used, with a specific script for each generation, in addition to a questionnaire with the socio-demographic data of the participants. The data were analyzed using the thematic content analysis. The results point to the transmission of legacies of order, solidarity and spirituality, which are transmitted through the coexistence between generations.

ABSTRACT The present qualitative research examined four new urban intentional collective communities in Israel as generational units, as defined in Mannheim’s (1970) theory of generations. The findings indicate that the cooperative experience of most of the group members in their rural collective communities of origin had a notable effect on the lifestyles in the urban communities they founded. The results also reveal that the group members’ interpretation of significant personal biographical events or collective memories shaped the group identity and consciousness into a new generational unit with a social message. The study contributes to the empirical research of the theory of generations. It also illuminates how intentional communities arise and oppose current trends in an era of neoliberalism and capitalist economy.

The findings indicate that the cooperative experience of most of the group members in their rural collective communities of origin had a notable effect on the lifestyles in the urban communities they founded. The results also reveal that the group members’ interpretation of significant personal biographical events or collective memories shaped the group identity and consciousness into a new generational unit with a social message. The study contributes to the empirical research of the theory of generations. It also illuminates how intentional communities arise and oppose current trends in an era of neoliberalism and capitalist economy.","PeriodicalId":46132,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intergenerational Relationships","volume":"20 1","pages":"312 - 327"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2021-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15350770.2021.1913274","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47953965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT This paper offers intergenerational professionals a unique approach to enhancing the physical, social, and emotional health of older adults residing in nursing facilities. Authors present a flexible framework for the adoption, adaptation, and facilitation of a university-driven intergenerational community-engaged learning program to engage residents in large group fitness activities. Strategies for program development and implementation are discussed using the Penn State Altoona and Old Dominion University Senior Wellness program as a flexible model promising reciprocal benefits for older adults and professionals in-training. The authors encourage program modification for application in readers’ respective intergenerational settings.
