In this study, using a modified Balanced Scorecard (BSC), we examined the effectiveness of Japan’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) websites against those of other major East Asian destinations. We compared the websites of Japan’s tourism boards and convention centers with 40 competing MICE websites (23 tourism boards and 17 convention centers). The results of this study demonstrated that modified BSC methods are a valid benchmarking tool for destination websites in a niche market such as the Asia-Pacific region. Japan fared the second out of the destinations evaluated on the BSC score. Specifically, Nagoya CVB and Pacifico Yokohama were ranked second for tourism boards and convention centers, respectively. Additionally, qualitative analysis reveals that the clarity of information on Japan’s websites is one of their major advantages over their counterparts in other Asian countries. A discussion of the findings is presented along with recommendations for further improvements.

To go or not to go? Exhibition attendees’ risk perception of COVID-19: Evidence from three Asian regions
IF 2.2 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2023-07-23 DOI: 10.1080/15470148.2023.2238879

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacts the exhibition industry. It alters the travel behavior of potential exhibition attendees, whose risk perceptions of COVID-19 have become a central issue swaying the “to go or not to go.” Applying Elaboration Likelihood Model, this study investigated the relationship between SNS information quality and source credibility, exhibition attendees’ satisfaction, and behavioral intention. Moreover, the moderating role of the perceived risk of COVID-19 between satisfaction and behavioral intention was examined. Drawing upon 334 respondents from three Asian exhibition destinations (i.e., Mainland China, Macau, S.A.R., and Malaysia), this study found that the risk perception of COVID-19 positively moderates the relationship between satisfaction and behavioral intention. The results of this study provide theoretical and practical implications to the academics and practitioners of the exhibition industry.

Abstract This qualitative case study research elucidated the stakeholder’s engagement in events management during the COVID-19 Pandemic, specifically during the Quincentennial Commemoration in the Philippines in the Municipality of Guiuan in Eastern Samar, Philippines. The researcher used the HyFlex Focus Group Discussion (HFGD) (n = 10) and Documentary Analysis to gather the needed information and data for the research. Semi-structured aide-memoire or guide question, tabular matrix, and reconnaissance were utilized. A repertory grid through data-driven development was used to analyze information systematically. Based on the findings, a framework for stakeholders’ engagement in events management and the pandemic situation was developed, concentrating on five aspects: Collaborators, Expedient, Channels, Quandaries, and Erudition. As a practical implication of the research, the five aspects can be a basis for primary and secondary stakeholders in monitoring and evaluating events management approaches during the COVID-19 Pandemic and other related risk entities.

Abstract While the event, tourism, and hospitality industry is constantly evolving, COVID-19 vastly shifted the roles, responsibilities, and jobs for event professionals, which caused event management educators to reevaluate their curriculum and course offerings. This study investigated the potential changes COVID-19 has had on event professionals’ skill sets. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, where data were collected from event professionals via focus groups and a national survey. The results highlighted the importance of general business management skillsets (communication, business writing, negotiation) as well as specific event management skills (digital and technology skills). Through a timely reflection on these changes during the pandemic, this study not only highlights the requirements for contemporary event professionals, but also offers implications for higher education institutions regarding how to effectively embrace the new landscape of event management in post-pandemic times.
