Research into the use being made of bilingual dictionaries by language learners 语言学习者对双语词典使用情况的研究

The aim of my research was to discover more about what exactly language learners are using their dictionaries for. From the returns it is clear that dictionaries are being used extensively as sources of grammatical information including gender, spelling, synonyms, verb, noun and adjective forms, register and pronunciation, not just for meaning. These results raise questions about the design of dictionary entries and about teaching dictionary skills to language learners who will expect to use dictionaries in examinations at all levels.

The Benefits of Language Laboratories for Learning Japanese as a Foreign Language. 语言实验室对日语外语学习的好处。

This article considers the pedagogical benefits of a state-of-the-art language laboratory for learning Japanese. The article argues that, although many believe the language laboratory is anachronistic, it deserves its rightful place as one of the ‘new’ technologies which can enhance foreign language learning. The benefits, however, are subject to the teacher's ability to encourage within students feelings of confidence and control about using this technology.

Keith Saunders examines national exam results to discover worrying trends in the declining level of performance in Modern Languages relative to other subjects and suggests that this may be because the exams are too difficult. He proposes some strategies to help teachers in being more rigorous in analysing exam trends.

This article reports on a small scale research project which investigated the Modern Foreign Language In-service provision offered by 52 Local Educational Authorities in England and Wales since the introduction of the National Curriculum in 1992. It then compares this analysis with the expressed In-service needs of Heads of Departments in secondary schools. The project is set against a background of a shifting but welcome perspective on In-service training.

This article analyses the results obtained at GCSE by pupils involved in a joint languages diversification scheme. Comparisons are made across languages, with other subjects, and with the results achieved by the previous year group which entered before diversification. The findings reveal a number of issues and highlight the impact of study time on attainment
