Este trabalho tem por objetivo testar a hipotese de que a autoeficacia atua como mediador entre o bem-estar subjetivo e o burnout. Participaram 228 cadetes, com idade media de 24 anos (DP = 0,85), sendo 148 policiais e 80 bombeiros. As analises de regressao demonstram que as variaveis do bem-estar subjetivo, principalmente a vitalidade subjetiva e os afetos negativos, predizem significativamente o burnout e suas subdimensoes. As analises de mediacao feitas provem evidencias empiricas satisfatorias para o papel mediador desempenhado pela autoeficacia. Esses resultados poderao apoiar o planejamento de intervencoes que visem o fortalecimento da autoeficacia em cadetes. A academia deve fornecer aos cadetes nao apenas as tecnicas e conhecimentos imprescindiveis para a atuacao profissional, mas tambem proporcionar o desenvolvimento de mecanismos de autorregulacao que possibilitem um senso maior de autoeficacia, alem de condicoes educacionais e laborais adequadas.

Based on the expectancy-value theory, the Mathematics Value Inventory (MVI) was intended to measure math value in four areas: interest, utility, achievement and personal cost. This paper presents the validation of the Spanish version among Uruguayan university students: factorial validity through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), gender related differences and predictive validity of academic achievement. A stratified random sampling according to Mathematics achievement was performed, with a confidence level of 95% and an error margin of 5%, and 218 students (77% women) voluntarily participated. Ages ranged from 18 to 29 years (M = 20.2, SD = 1.8). Results confirm the four-factor structure as well as suggest a second order factor. The latter is recommended for continuous assessment of general attitude towards math, while the four-factor model could be a better strategy to identify problematic areas and career comparison. Higher interest and need for achievement are related to greater academic performance, while utility and personal cost seem to have no impact on it. No gender differences on math value were found. In sum, the MVI proved to be a suitable instrument to measure students' attitudes towards mathematics, which may help the design of intervention strategies.

Este estudo quantitativo teve por objetivo avaliar o bem-estar espiritual e a autoestima de pacientes com insuficiencia renal cronica em tratamento hemodialitico e investigar a relacao entre ambos. Foi desenvolvido em uma unidade de hemodialise de um hospital filantropico do Sul de Minas Gerais, com amostra por conveniencia (N=118), predominância de mulheres e media de idade de 57 anos. A coleta de dados deu-se por meio de entrevista, de outubro a novembro de 2013, com utilizacao do instrumento de caracterizacao sociodemografica, clinica e espiritual, da Escala de Avaliacao da Autoestima de Rosenberg e da Escala de Bem Estar Espiritual. Foi aplicada estatistica descritiva, coeficiente de correlacao de Spearman e o teste de Mann-Whitney. A media de autoestima foi de 31,70, classificada como alta e o bem-estar espiritual, 92,91, classificado como moderado. Houve correlacao estatistica significativa ao nivel de 1%, ou seja, quanto maior foi o nivel de bem estar espiritual encontrado, maior foi a autoestima. Alem disso, quanto maior foi a importância que o individuo denotou a religiosidade/espiritualidade maior foi seu nivel de autoestima e de bem-estar espiritual (p=0,001). Dessa forma, pode-se considerar a espiritualidade como um recurso possivel a ser considerado no enfrentamento da condicao cronica e seu tratamento.

Each individual has a repertoire of strategies for dealing with time, differentiating themselves in terms of levels of urgency when performing tasks and the number of appointments they are committed to. A few instruments have been developed to access these individual differences concerning time, notably the Time Urgency and Perpetual Activation Scale (TUPA), which measures levels of time urgency and perceptual activation. This paper describes a translated and adapted TUPA for the Brazilian context, and proposes its short-version. The translated scale was submitted as part of an online survey to 395 participants (71.4% female), ranging in age from 17 to 64 years (M = 25.36, SD = 8.65). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses suggested a new bifactorial solution with good psychometric properties, involving a time urgency dimension and another related to occupations, named Time Urgency and Constant Ocupation Scale (UTOC). The UTOC showed good evidence of construct validity, as well as appropriate levels of convergent validity with robust measures of anxiety and stress.

This study investigated the contribution of phonological awareness (PA) and rapid automatized naming (RAN) to the persistence of beginning reading difficulties in Portuguese. The study was longitudinal and involved 13 children who had shown little progress in learning to read during their 1st school year, and 13 children with typical reading development. At the beginning of the study, when participants were, on average, six years and nine months of age, their ability to read and spell words, and their PA and RAN skills were assessed. One year later, the children who had shown difficulties in learning to read were divided into two groups, based on their progress in learning to read during the course of the study: a group with persistent reading difficulties and a group whose difficulties had been overcome. Results showed that both groups performed equally poorly and below controls on the PA tasks at the beginning of the study. In contrast, only the children with persistent reading difficulties performed more poorly than controls on the RAN tasks at that time.

Maternal care is an early life experience that has been consistently related to alterations in the genetic expression through epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation or DNA histone modification. The present study aims to present a theoretical investigation about maternal care as an environmental event that may produce epigenetic alterations related to the biological bases of stress vulnerability. The research was based on empirical studies as well as literature review on non-human animals concerning epigenetics, stress and maternal care. It also presents some studies on humans that show such effects, particularly the ones that influence or are influenced by the operant behavior. Post-natal maternal care is found to cause effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity participating in the building of stress vulnerability. Its possible physiological effects on the operant conditioning point out to alternatives to intervention based on the plasticity of the epigenome formation. This knowledge enhances the proximity between Epigenetics and Behavior Analysis at a basic level through studies with non-human animals and at an applied level through a better understanding of child neurodevelopment and proper planning of effective intervention with mothers and children.
