Connecting the dots in systems of domination and violence: a conversation
Q1 ANTHROPOLOGY Pub Date : 2023-07-01 DOI: 10.1177/03063968231175036
This article is an edited version of a conversation between Barbara Ransby and Derecka Purnell, two US-based key Black feminist activists on ‘New lines of Black resistance in the US: undoing racial capitalism and the carceral state’, which took place at the ‘New Circuits of Anti-racism Conference’, King’s College London, October 2022 (IRR50). They discuss their own political journeys, shared by many activists today, which they describe as involving building and re-envisioning a desired future, as well as the role of Black feminism and abolition. The conversation, introduced by Chantelle Lewis of Surviving Society and Sophia Siddiqui of Race & Class, unpacks the workings of the carceral state and the specific racial and class targeting of surplus Black workers. Drawing from their experience on the practicalities of organising today, they discuss their commitment to internationalism, the challenges of building genuine coalitions and the need to connect the dots between different systems of domination and violence to understand the functioning of the carceral state, and the centrality of reproductive justice and the fight for bodily autonomy.

New Times or new circuits: recovering Sivanandan’s political economy
Q1 ANTHROPOLOGY Pub Date : 2023-07-01 DOI: 10.1177/03063968231168779
In 1990, A. Sivanandan published an essay subtitled ‘The hokum of New Times’, which took aim at Stuart Hall and Martin Jacques’ theorisation of Thatcherism and the neoliberal revolution. Central to this criticism was Sivanandan’s decade-long tracing of the ‘new circuits of imperialism’ that had been engendered by a new global division of labour and hierarchies of production, technological change and the domestic fall-out of such processes in forms of British state racism and racialised forms of exploitation. Although Hall’s work has diffused into the field of international political economy, Sivanandan’s take has largely been neglected. This article, developed from a presentation at the ‘New Circuits of Anti-racism Conference’, King’s College, London, October 2022, will briefly return to the Hall and Sivanandan debate to help foreground Sivanandan’s international political economy and also highlight how it took racism and imperialism to be integral to the neoliberal order in Britain and beyond. It will show how Sivanandan’s anti-racist and anti-imperial international political economy can help us to frame and understand the current crisis of neoliberalism from the vantage points of ‘over here, and over there’, and how thinking with and through international political economy must be at the heart of contemporary anti-racism’s address of the current crisis of capital.

From memory to a re-imagining; learning from Sivanandan 从记忆到重新想象;向Sivanandan学习
Q1 ANTHROPOLOGY Pub Date : 2023-07-01 DOI: 10.1177/03063968231166909
This personal account of what Sivanandan’s writing – particularly his novel When Memory Dies – means to one Sri Lankan Tamil writer from the diaspora shows how his imaginative melding of history, politics and individual lives speaks to the issues facing Third World and ‘subaltern’ poets, intellectuals and novelists today. Through Sivanandan’s work, and an exploration of the significance of the interplay of the personal and the political, the author focuses on how to make radical art in a neoliberal globalist world. This was originally delivered as a talk at the ‘New Circuits of Anti-racism Conference’, King’s College London, October 2022 (IRR50).

Stitching together the threads of internationalism: London in anti-imperial organising
Q1 ANTHROPOLOGY Pub Date : 2023-07-01 DOI: 10.1177/03063968231166907
In this article, based on a modified speech delivered as part of the ‘Radical internationalism and shifts in the global order’ panel at the ‘New Circuits of Anti-racism Conference’, King’s College London, October 2022 (IRR50), an organiser both for Palestinian liberation and migrant rights scopes the potential for international solidarity in the metropole today. He contrasts a recent revival in solidarity during the ‘Corbyn era’ with times in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when London was a hotbed of progressive internationalism as exiles sought refuge and freedom to think, write, organise and build links. He asks what we can learn from these experiences, and what the possibilities are of such concerted internationalism in London, and Britain more generally, today.

This is an abridged and edited version of the speech given by the author in the panel on ‘The influence of A. Sivanandan’s ideas’ at the conference ‘New circuits of anti-racism’ at King’s College London in October 2022. It follows on from her seminal 2019 article (in Race & Class 61.2, ‘“White privilege”: shortcuts to anti-racism’) which drew on Sivanandan’s ‘RAT and the degradation of black struggle’, his critique of essentialising blackness and treating racism, a structural issue, as an interpersonal one out of which you could be ‘retrained’. She discusses ways of radical, respectful organising at a time when difference and competition of experiences can set back unity.
