Women entrepreneurs often face impoverished social networks, hindering opportunity recognition, resource mobilization, and innovation. Governments promote incubator to boost entrepreneurship, but these are often male dominated, perpetuating gender inequalities. This study examined whether incubation benefits women as much as men entrepreneurs. Data from 268 incubated (men and women) and 140 non-incubated women entrepreneurs showed significant differences in entrepreneurial functions between incubated and non-incubated women. Contrary to expectations, no significant differences were found between incubated men and women. Thus, incubators offer alternative affiliation by providing valuable networks for women beyond their familial connections. Furthermore, incubators create a level playing field for women entrepreneurs.JEL Classification: M13, L26, C83, 030

The experience of suffering is ubiquitous in healthcare facilities, but against this backdrop, is compassion a ‘nice to have’ or does it also affect patient safety? This article uses mixed methods across two studies to understand team compassionate care behaviours as a shared unit property and its association with patient safety outcomes. Using data from 188 healthcare teams, Study 1 finds that team compassionate care behaviours mediated the relationship between team psychological safety and fewer patient hospital-associated infections. Furthermore, the positive relationship between team psychological safety and team compassionate care behaviours was weakened when team workload demands were high. In Study 2, we interviewed 25 nurses to understand the experiences and gain further insights into the relationships between the focal variables. Together, our findings provide evidence that compassion emerges at the team level, is driven by team antecedents, moderated by team environments and tangibly affects patient safety.JEL Classification: M00

Australian teachers and school employees report high levels of stress-related mental health problems. Previous theory and research show that workplace training in strategies to manage stress can improve organisational productivity as well as employee wellbeing. Theory suggests that self-compassion strategies may produce better outcomes, than standard cognitive behavioural training interventions, due to activation of self-soothing. This pilot randomised controlled trial evaluated whether inclusion of a brief compassion-focussed therapy (CFT) training workshop was more effective in reducing stress-related mental health problems of school employees, than the standard professional development (PD) workshop that incorporated cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness strategies. School employees (103) were recruited and randomly allocated to either the standard PD alone or to also participate in a brief CFT workshop. There were very large reductions in burnout and clinically significant improvements in mental health problems under both conditions. The results provide preliminary evidence that CFT-enhanced training improves secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction; further research needs to be conducted with a larger sample. These results may also be relevant to other occupations with a high emotional load.JEL Classification: I310

This study looks at the effect of board composition on a firm’s propensity for strategic change. We hypothesise that board composition influences strategic change and internationalisation moderates this relationship. We do a longitudinal study of 433 listed firms in the United States. The findings indicate that the board composition represented by two variables, namely board size and CEO duality, leads to less strategic change. In contrast, the third variable, interlocking directorships, leads to more strategic change. Our results also suggest that internationalisation mitigates the negative impact of board size and CEO duality on strategic change and strengthens the positive impact of interlocking directorships.JEL Classification: C12, L20, L21, M10

With the competition between e-commerce platforms intensifying, advance-selling has gradually become a mainstream marketing strategy. This article establishes a mathematical model of competition between two platforms and retailers, considering four scenarios: spot-sale only, advance-selling only, spot-sale with coupons, advance-selling with coupons. The study explores the impact mechanism of platform competition on advance-selling strategies. The results show that when the advantage of product evaluation is large, the unit transaction cost is small or the product cost is low, the retailers should actively adopt the advance-selling scheme with discount pricing. Compared with low-value products, high-value products are priced higher and have greater demand, which can bring higher revenue to the retailers and the platforms. The benefits of the advance-selling scheme are limited, but the issuance of coupons could increase the revenue of both platforms and retailers, and the value of platform coupons in the spot-sale market is higher.JEL Classification: L81, C79

In this article, we investigate the impact of the influx of retail investors during the COVID-19 lockdowns on the New Zealand Stock Exchange on the efficiency of the market. On one hand, these investors bring added liquidity to the market, which generally improves market efficiency, and on the other hand, many of these investors were inexperienced retail traders who are often viewed as noise traders harming market efficiency. This natural experiment allows us to investigate the impact of retail investors. Using a sample of 99 New Zealand Exchange listed companies, we collect intraday price and quote data from 1 January 2019 to 24 March 2021. We compute a range of market quality measures across three categories: trading costs, price efficiency and speed of information incorporation. Our results clearly indicate that the influx of retail investors has reduced market quality; in particular, we observe more price predictability and information being impounded into prices more slowly.JEL Classification: C10, G14, G20

Delivery of apt financial advice to the public has become a high priority in developed countries due to the increased complexity of personal finance. Using the theory of professionalisation and qualitative interviews, we investigate the common barriers that three apex financial planning professional bodies encounter as they create a jurisdiction for Certified Financial Planners® (CFP). We show that a sales orientation, commission-based remuneration, membership entrenchment with financial product providers and other stakeholder lobbying impede the professional bodies’ progress. However, governmental willingness to regulate financial advice, coupled with technological advances, may enable professionalisation. Our article adds to research on the professionalisation of financial planning and offers practical insights into how other bodies around the world can progress CFP’s jurisdiction. Our research differs from the published work on other professions because it is happening even as we write.JEL Classification: J44, L84, K23
