Lefebvre’s vast oeuvre has been widely recognized by housing scholars, many of whom were inspired by his ideas of the production of space, the critique of everyday life or the Right to the City. However, not unlike but clearly more than other disciplines, housing scholarship has failed to engage with Lefebvre’s and Régulier’s Rhythmanalysis project (Lefebvre 2004; Lefebvre and Régulier 1985). In two recent books, Dawn Lyon explains why this has been the case, what we may miss by ignoring and what we may gain by engaging with Rhythmanalysis. Across five chapters, the first book above, published in 2020, places Lefebvre and Régulier’s Rhythmanalysis among previous work on rhythms while also linking it to Lefebvre’s other theoretical contributions. Chapter 2 introduces the key temporal concept of rhythm as produced by any expenditure of energy in ways that are repetitive but where repetition is never fully identical but accommodates some difference (as the cycles of day and night, seasons, work and rest, growth and decline are repetitive but never identical). The further vocabulary of rhythmanalysis is succinctly presented: polyrhythmia (the fact that the world is composed of a multitude of rhythms of the alive and lifeless, human and non-human); linear and cyclical rhythm (the quantified time of the clock vs the cyclical time of nature); eurhythmia, isorhythmia and arrhythmia (when rhythms combine smoothly, in perfect harmony or in disagreement); the centrality of the body through which we grasp and are grasped by rhythms; and dressage (the process by which dominant rhythms are learnt or imposed on the body). The remainder of chapter 2, together with chapters 3 and 5 give interesting examples of doing rhythmanalysis by reviewing this emerging field of studies, e.g. in relation to history, mobility, place-making, working, trading, hospitality. Housing is notably missing. I found the critical reflections on the gains, limitations and future directions of the rhythmanalysis project (chapter 4) particularly useful in wrapping the discussion. The second book above, published in 2022, is an edited collection of 15 chapters. It had a dedicated symposium at the Royal Geographical Society – IBG Annual International Conference, 2022, Newcastle, UK, being well received by a large audience. Starting from the position that

ABSTRACT To a large extent, established formal participation schemes fail to deliver on their promise of transferring substantial power to tenants, while self-organized housing remains a niche for those who have a strong inclination and ample resources. Given the rise of renting in Europe, and the intensifying housing crisis, increasing tenants’ ontological security by allowing them meaningful influence is urgent and important. Self-management, where tenants take over practical tasks from their housing provider, has the potential to expand the immediate influence of tenants over their direct environment in a more accessible manner than self-organization or formal participation. Yet, knowledge about such self-managed housing is limited and analyses are few. In this article, we present findings from a qualitative case-study of a Dutch project that is managed by its tenants. We conclude that self-management can have added value, but unless it is integrated in formal participation structures, its impact will be limited.

ABSTRACT Empirical social-ecological system (SES) research on neighbourhoods’ common property is scarce, especially in unpacking the mediational effects of SES components on residents’ collective action performance. By conceptualizing Ostrom’s SES framework, this paper aims to explore key institutional-social-ecological factors and mediational effects of the interaction variables that influence residents’ collective action performance. To this end, 414 questionnaire data were collected from ten gated communities in Taigu, China. Through the ridge regression model, it is found that nine institutional-social-ecological factors are associated with residents’ collective action performance. Next, based on the identified institutional-social-ecological factors, the bootstrapping approach was utilized to study the mediational effects of the interaction variables. The results show that (i) frequency of communication among residents, (ii) conflict among residents, and (iii) residents’ investment in community management mediate the relationships between the institutional-social-ecological factors and residents’ collective action performance. Lastly, several collective action policies and strategies have been offered.

A Capability Approach to Evaluating well-being and Equality in Housing: Clear Conceptual Difference but Unclear Practical Difference?

ABSTRACT This study empirically examines the difference of the capability approach to evaluating well-being and equality in housing, with data from the Netherlands. Conventionally, well-being/inequality in housing have been evaluated by measures of economic/material means for housing or satisfaction. In theory, these evaluation approaches overlook some important normative concerns, and applying the capability approach – evaluating the capabilities to reside in ways a person values – can compensate for such weakness. However, its practical difference appears as yet contested. This study reviews the sources of such contesting views, and clarifies them by comparing the capability-oriented and conventional measures of housing deprivation in terms of their identification of deprived groups that welfare policies are supposed to address. The results showed that the overlap between the deprived groups was rather limited, revealing blind spots in the current welfare policies for housing and the informational benefits of capability-oriented evaluation. This study adds implications for measurement methods.

ABSTRACT People and places are entangled through material, social, discursive and emotional relations, which makes it complex to understand the daily living in a certain place. In this article, we explore such entanglements, with an outset in two underprivileged neighbourhoods in Denmark, by drawing on two sets of theoretical thinking: The framework of multiplicity, and the concept of place. We argue that the neighbourhoods cannot be defined as either good or bad places of living. Rather they exist in complex ways, where what makes some people feel at home, is what makes others feel insecure, and where such ambivalent feelings can co-exist inherently for individual residents. Furthermore, our analysis shows that manifold enactments of residents and places enable multiple trajectories of how to live and identify oneself in relation to the neighbourhood.

ABSTRACT The paper examines how people experiencing persistent housing insecurity hold on to or restore ontological security. Conceptually it recognises ontological security as an “ongoing accomplishment” that is “actively sought”, and introduces four coping constructs theorised by Giddens as ways that individuals cope with persistent threats to security. The domestic practices of low-income, single older women living in various forms of insecure housing in Australia are the focus. The paper identifies “emotion-focused” and “action-focused” strategies through which women sought ontological security, including efforts to mentally accommodate insecurity, tenancy practices, through which they engaged with housing risk, and the use of storage facilities as holding sites of identity and routine. These strategies resonate with and extend Giddens' four coping constructs to the housing field, reflecting pragmatic acceptance of housing risk, sustained optimism in the face of housing risk, cynical pessimism, and engagement with housing risk. The paper reveals dynamic and fraught relations between home and ontological security that are frequently an exercise in cruel optimism.

ABSTRACT For-profit and non-profit companies develop, own, and manage a majority of the affordable housing in the United States. Both types of enterprises rely on developers, asset managers, property managers, and resident service coordinators to strike a balance between financial and social goals. These conditions raise questions about how individuals employed in different sectors and in different professional roles perceive this balancing act. Such questions are interesting because the field logic of the affordable housing industry could encourage those working in various capacities on behalf of for-profits and non-profits to have similar perceptions of these issues, whereas sector and professional logics could encourage them to have perceptions that are dissimilar. This study explores these alternative propositions. Results suggest more pronounced perceptual cleavages exist across professions than across sectors in the U.S. affordable housing industry – and that representatives of for-profits and non-profits alike conceptualize their work in ways consistent with institutional logics theory.

ABSTRACT New legislation was introduced in 2018 in Victoria, Australia to encourage the negotiation of affordable housing agreements. This change resulted in the expansion of formal and informal mechanisms for cross-sectoral affordable housing delivery. In this paper we draw on 20 interviews with housing stakeholders, focusing on the process of negotiation. We propose a novel theoretical framework to interpret capacity for collective action in a loosely regulated policy area, combining insights from negotiation theory and Institutional Capacity Development (ICD) literature. We find widespread concerns about the opaque, inefficient and potentially exploitative nature of outcomes. We also find that agreements varied across projects based on levels of trust; access to information; political capital; capacity for mutual gain; and the presence of shared rules for interacting. We conclude that competition-based negotiations may lead to increased institutional capacity while also highlighting the challenges of housing delivery in the context of institutional uncertainty.

Through Making Better Lives , British anthropology makes a necessary – and renewed – propo-sition to the field of homelessness studies. The culmination of two years’ continuous fieldwork in and around the middle of Paris with people of “no fixed abode” ( sans domicile fixé ), Lenhard presents us with a nuanced monograph about homelessness which combines the creativity of his interlocutors with his own originality. Dissatisfied with the notion that homelessness forecloses the possibility of constructing a meaningful life, he asks: how do people experien-cing homelessness make a home on the streets – and why do they? To do this, Lenhard reconstructs his experiences and observations of “hanging out” in a multitude of urban spaces: the Gare du Nord, car parks and green spaces, the sides and insides of retail outlets, mobile drug outreach, day centres, casework offices, hotels and a series of accommodation institu-tions. His key interlocutors – those whom he befriended and with whom he shared his two years – are the common thread across all these spaces. He depicts how his interlocutors inhabited these spaces not merely as a passive means of survival. In fact, he illustrates that they purposefully acted on the world – and their selves – in the present so that they can make a better life.
