Abstract This special volume examines the role translanguaing has in teacher education. Authors explore how pre and inservice teachers enact translanguaging pedagogy in linguistically and culturally diverse K-12 classrooms and community settings. The special issue explores some of the current tensions and perspectives in the field of multilingual education and teacher education in ways that illuminate new ideas and offer new approaches associated with translanguaging.

Abstract Many teachers collaborated with and spoke up for multilingual families during the pandemic. Yet, little is known about how and why teachers’ understanding of multilingual family engagement changed during remote teaching. This study gives six teachers from a school district with a small proportion of multilingual students a voice to tell their stories. Figured worlds theory and discourse analysis were used to interpret in-depth data to uncover how the figured world of multilingual family engagement developed for this group of teachers during COVID-19. Findings showed that even if these teachers dealt with the same challenges of remote teaching as other educators, they quickly began to realize how important partnerships with the families are. This new understanding resulted in a realignment of their actions. Moreover, these teachers became agents of change as they started to address inequities on behalf of their students which were increasingly made visible by the pandemic.

In the field of English medium instruction (EMI), multilingual research approaches are crucial to carrying out effective and ethically responsible research, because EMI policies and practices are inherently multilingual. This paper is a partial replication study that adopts a ‘researching mul-tilingually’ analytical framework to interrogate the challenges and affor-dances of using multiple languages during two EMI research projects. In the project in Turkey, the lead researcher, who is an English-Turkish bilingual, analysed policy documents (n = 145) and interview data (n = 67) drawing on her knowledge of both languages. Additionally, 85 EMI classroom observations were conducted. In the project in China, the research team of two L1 English speakers and two L1 Chinese speakers investigated 93 bilingual policy documents and conducted inter-views with 26 policy arbiters by drawing on both languages during data collection and analysis. Together, these reflections highlight how multilingual approaches can be utilised throughout the research process, from team formation, research design, data collection, data analysis, and presentation of findings in research reports.
