Fetters et al.’s (2013) mixed methods integration framework uses construction metaphors: building, connecting, merging, and embedding. In a similar vein, this article uses an architectural metaphor and introduces design patterns as building blocks for mixed methods research design. A design pattern embeds one specific design decision into its preceding design decisions. As an example, I will describe a design pattern for mixed methods matched comparisons sampling. Using one exemplar study, I will demonstrate the pattern’s three design phases. Embedding matched comparisons sampling into its preceding design decisions shows that, to optimize the comparison of subpopulations in the qualitative research strand, the quantitative sample of this design pattern should aim to include almost all members of one small target population.

Mixed methods principles can support and advance cross-cultural research. This article provides different ways for researchers to conceptualize culture and summarizes the Synergistic Participatory Mixed Methods Quality Model (SPMMQM): Cycle of Research. The SPMMQM summarizes several mixed methods principles and philosophical foundations that support cross-cultural work, including the application of etic and emic concepts drawn from ethnography. This article also introduces the idea of using joint displays within the SPMMQM and cites several primary resources readers can consult should they wish to learn more about cross-culture mixed methods research.

I dedicate this paper to my friend and colleague, Mike Fetters, who served as senior co-editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR). In this paper, I discuss key mixed methods developments over the last 35 years, my fortunate involvement in them, and my collaboration with Mike Fetters in several of them. The discussion focuses on founding leaders of the field, combining quantitative and qualitative research, co-founding JMMR and the Mixed Methods International Research Association, teaching and simplifying mixed methods research, promoting the methodology internationally, assisting external groups in establishing quality standards for the field, and co-founding with Mike Fetters the Michigan Mixed Methods Research Program. This discussion contributes a personal historical perspective about the mixed methods field.

The relatively recent trend of mixing MMR with other methodologies represents a significant methodological advancement in the field and on examination spans a diverse range of methodologies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of recent trends in inter-methodology mixing. The paper will provide signposts to the methodological literature that has begun to conceptualize and advance these methodological innovations and highlights examples of empirical studies that are adopting these new forms of mixed methodological types. The article provides a snapshot of the current state of this trend with particular reference to the mixing and merging of MMR with four established methodologies: grounded theory, case study research, community-based participatory research, and action research.

This intervention study uses community-based participatory research (CBPR) and longitudinal design to examine changes in COVID-19 prevention knowledge over time (3 time points) among racially minoritized participants ( n = 38). The intervention comprised critical dialogues alongside an illustration used to engage participants in conversations about socioeconomic conditions affecting acquisition of COVID-19 knowledge. Quantitative data showed that COVID-19 prevention knowledge was higher for participants who completed the intervention. Qualitative data were used to illustrate the context under which participants experienced COVID-19 pandemic, how they received COVID-19 prevention information, and how they engaged in decision-making around COVID-19 protective behaviors. Contributions to mixed method research: The combination of CBPR, repeated measures, and critical dialogues (with and art form) in intervention research.

This article aims to elevate the appreciation of Dr Michael D. Fetters’s contributions to mixed methods pedagogy by highlighting his innovative teaching methods called the “mixed methods treasure hunt.” Utilizing Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, this paper provides a detailed examination of how Fetters’s legacy can be adapted and extended to Japan and beyond. It explores the efficacy of the mixed methods treasure hunt as a pedagogical tool, offering promising solutions for mixed methods research education. This paper contributes to the field by providing a practical methodology that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application and enhances learning opportunities, especially for mixed methods learners in the East Asian cultural context, thereby broadening the applicability and impact of Fetters’s legacy.

Integration lies at the heart of mixed methods research, but it has primarily been considered from a practical rather than a conceptual or theoretical perspective. In this paper, I develop a contextually situated, parsimonious conceptual model of the substantive dimensions that constitute integration. I conclude that integration between heterogeneous components in mixed methods research is constituted by interdependence that is connected, transactional, transformative, coherent, and dynamic. This conceptual model is presented here in the expectation that it will prompt researchers to think more deeply about the phenomena they study and the integration of the methods they use to study those phenomena.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the process and insights gleaned from developing an implementation matrix to convey a concise, yet detailed representation of the project integration steps in a single diagram. The article is based on an explanatory sequential study conducted with 248 teachers exploring how beliefs shaped their use of technology. This article contributes to mixed methods research (MMR) by providing an example that can be used as guide by other researchers in developing and using the implementation matrix as a tool for communicating procedurally the mixed methods project integration steps for an explanatory sequential study. It also provides analytical insights gleaned and recommendations for how the implementation matrix can be developed and utilized.

This article addresses the essential yet often overlooked aspect of choosing a research topic in mixed methods research studies. Seven leading mixed methods textbooks are reviewed for insights into choosing a research topic which elucidates the dearth of specific guidance in the existing literature. Utilizing the established 13-step framework proposed by Collins et al. (2006), a new step is proposed that incorporates the process of research topic selection. This addition is intended to encourage thoughtful consideration of the research topic and make transparent decisions regarding topic selection, thereby ensuring coherence with the broader mixed methods research process. The framework is presented alongside an exploration of reasons for choosing a research topic and problem and is derived from the reviewed literature.
