Women’s paid-work participation remains low in South Asian countries even though it is considered crucial for development and alleviation of poverty. Prior qualitative interviews have revealed the general lack of knowledge on labor market opportunities for women workers. This study aims to investigate whether providing parents with information on income earning opportunities for young women is effective in changing parental attitudes toward women working outside the home. A randomized controlled trial was conducted within commuting distance of formal export-oriented garment factories in rural Pakistan. The estimation results show that provision of information about working conditions and environments is effective in influencing positive changes in parental attitudes toward women working in garment factories. Given the strong stigma associated with women working outside the home, especially in factories, I believe that the observed positive transformation forms an encouraging first step toward achieving actual enhancement of women’s paid-work participation. 2

Farm Size and Productivity - The Role of Family Labor

In this study, we draw a theoretical model to demonstrate that small farms achieve lower total factor productivity (TFP) compared to large farms, even though their yield may be higher. We argue that taking into account family labor modifies the farm size-productivity relationship. We test our hypotheses on geocoded data from 5,645 agriculture farms in Pakistan using Pakistan household integrated economic survey 2018-19 and labor force survey 2018 combined with remote sensing data to account for farm-specific topographic features. We base our analysis on OLS and stochastic frontier analysis. We find that family labor is the key to understanding the nature and strength of the farm size – productivity relationship. Farm size’s association, both with yield and TFP, turns positive when we measure family labor in terms of market wage rate rather than marginal product. Farm yield decreases by -0.07% with a one percent increase in farm size but gets insignificant or increases by 0.034% when family labor cost is measured at market wages rather than the marginal product. We find that higher family labor intensity, labor market distortion due to the notion of family dishonor, and suboptimal crop selection by small farms play a crucial role in this context.

Women's Empowerment and Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence from a Multidimensional Policy in India

In this paper, we study a multidimensional women empowerment program from India to estimate its effects on intimate partner violence faced by women. We exploit plausibly exogenous geographical variation in the implementation of the program and cohort-variation generated by eligibility rules to estimate our effects. Using a reduced form difference-in-difference design, we find evidence of lesser emotional and physical violence for women potentially exposed to the program. Overall, women face lesser intimate partner violence as well as controlling behavior on account of the empowerment intervention. We conjecture that improved anthropometric outcomes, higher literacy, and better labor market opportunities serve as potential mechanisms causing this effect. ∗We thank Nayana Bose, Rossella Calvi, Shreyasee Das, Indraneel Dasgupta, Gaurav Dhamija, Divya Gupta, Lakshmi Iyer, Tarun Jain, Jyotsna Jalan, Namrata Kala, Jai Kamal and Imran Rasul for useful suggestions and inputs. We would also like to thank conference participants at EEA Annual Congress (2020), ACEGD (2019) in ISI Delhi and Winter school (2019) in DSE for useful inputs. We also thank seminar participants at SAMVAAD (2020) as well as at Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata (2019) for valuable feedback. Ordering of Authors: We do not follow alphabetical ordering but instead follow the certified random author ordering proposed by Ray r © Robson (2018) using the official AEA Author Randomization Tool available on the American Economic Association website. †勒克瑙印度管理学院;somdeep@iiml.ac.in⏹勒克瑙印度管理学院;prashant.poddar@iiml.ac.in
