Interpersonal synchrony-the temporally coordinated alignment of behavior, physiology, and neural activity-is crucial for successful social interaction and group performance. However, the context-dependent nature of synchrony remains underexplored. This study offers an empirical test of the multimodal flexible synchrony theory, which posits that social contexts are defined by two latent potentials: the pull toward synchrony and the pull toward segregation. According to the theory, these latent pulls shape the expression and function of multimodal synchrony. To test this theory experimentally, these pulls were manipulated in a dyadic coordination task, and their effects on the relationship between two indices of physiological synchrony, performance, and group cohesion were examined. Results revealed that the relationship between physiological synchrony and performance and cohesion depends on the balance of these contextual pulls. In high-segregation contexts, heart rate interbeat interval (IBI) synchrony was negatively associated with performance, while in low-segregation contexts, IBI synchrony was positively associated with performance. These results were also true for the association between IBI synchrony and cohesion but only in high-synchrony contexts. Electrodermal activity (EDA) synchrony was positively associated with performance in high-segregation or low-synchrony contexts and was negatively associated with performance in low-segregation or high-synchrony contexts. EDA synchrony was not associated with group cohesion. These findings provide validation for the flexible multimodal theory and have significant implications for understanding and optimizing human collaboration across various social settings, suggesting the importance of considering both the need for alignment and individual autonomy.

This article provides an executive summary of the American Psychological Association's (2024) approved Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Older Adults. As many more Americans are living longer, the demand for mental health services for older adults across many settings is increasing, as is the need for guidance for psychologists with limited training in working with older adults. Newly organized to be consistent with the Pikes Peak geropsychology competencies, the guidelines provide updated recommendations regarding attitudes, general aspects of aging, intersectionality of individual identities, clinical issues, assessment, intervention, consultation, professional issues, and continuing education and training relevant to practice for psychologists working with older adults, including an increased focus on diversity and telehealth. In this executive summary, we provide brief synopses of the 21 guidelines and conclude with suggested resources for professional development in this vitally important area of clinical practice. The unnarrated self: Meaning and motivation without self-stories.

Scholars have written extensively about self-narratives, paying particular attention to how they help or hinder well-being. The underlying view is that, while some self-narrative structures and content serve people better than others, self-narratives are pervasive and necessary for numerous positive life outcomes, notably meaning and motivation. Without disputing that many people have self-narratives and benefit from them in these ways, we propose that others may abandon self-narratives in favor of less storied, but potentially no less meaningful or motivated, ways of being. To clarify life without self-narratives, we first consider why one might wish to abandon them, noting that some may find them inauthentic, self-absorbed, superfluous, or impediments to change. Next, we consider how one might avoid self-narratives and adopt an unnarrated self. In particular, we present embracing arbitrary commitment and orienting toward the present as approaches to experience that can facilitate an unnarrated self of meaning and motivation. Our overarching contention is that, despite its assumed ubiquity, the practice of telling ourselves stories about ourselves-even the best versions of those stories-is not always necessary or helpful. For some, abstaining from such stories may afford a richer and more viable connection to experience, fulfillment, and committed action. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved).
