The main objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between Iranian translation learners’ critical thinking (CT), risk-taking (RT), and their English-to-Persian translation quality. To achieve this aim, a group of 120 male and female university students majoring in English translation (ET) were selected based on convenience sampling. Then, two questionnaires, namely CT and RT, were administered to them. Along with the questionnaires, two texts were given to all participants to translate. The quality of translations was assessed based on Farahzad’s (1992) model by two raters. After data collection and analysis, it was revealed that there was a positive and significant relationship between participants’ CT and RT and their translation quality. Moreover, further data analysis showed that RT was a better predictor of translation quality than CT. The findings of this study would be applicable to translation learners, teachers, and translation training courses.

This study investigates the competence of employing YouTube videos in teaching speaking skills among EFL Turkish students in Turkey. The study comprised 40 students attending general English-speaking classes in a language school in Istanbul, Turkey. The participants were divided equally into an experimental group and a control group of 20 students each. The traditional method was employed in teaching speaking for the control group, while YouTube videos were used for the experimental group. Both groups were given an oral pre-test and post-test to track their development. Four experienced English teachers rated the participants’ speaking performance using TOEFL independent speaking descriptors, which consist of four primary classifications: general description, delivery, language use, and topic development. The study's outcome showed that both groups' speaking performance was developed. However, the experimental group demonstrated a better speaking improvement than the traditional one. Delivery and language use were noticeably advanced in the experimental group's performance using YouTube videos during speaking classes.

Translation expresses thoughts of social groups that are considerably different from one another. It could also be considered as a way of bringing cultures closer, which entails problems related to the way in which cultural elements are translated. There is always difficulty in understanding and translating a foreign text in which many cultural aspects and contexts are imbedded. The process of transferring these cultural aspects of texts necessitates the existence of equivalents (be they exact or near) and corresponding attributes in the Target Language (TL) to guarantee certain credibility and validity of the translation. Taboo words are one of these cultural aspects; they represent a big challenge to translators in the Arab world, as they are not tolerated by most conservative communities in the Arab world. This means that translators of movies (or subtitle producers) are obliged to resort to translating techniques to mitigate the degree of “indecency” while trying simultaneously not to lose the (im)moral and offensive impact of the expressed taboo words. The translation techniques used by movie translators vary from domestication and substitution to utter omission in order to lessen the translation constraints mainly related to religious profanity and moral offensiveness. So, this article attempts to show how translators use the previously mentioned techniques in order to bridge the gap between the original text of the movie and the target product text (subtitle).

Translation of children’s literature has always been an important part of the study of translated works. From the perspective of conceptual blending, translation is a dynamic cognitive process involving multiple interactions among the translator, source language author and target language reader, and simultaneously binding and creative unity. Different from adult literature, children’s literature has its own particularity, so we should pay attention to translation methods and means. Based on conceptual blending theory, this thesis uses the theoretical research method and case analysis method to interpret the two processes of the cultural blending of the source text and the source text and the target language in Ma Ainong’s translation of Anne of Green Gables. In the process of blending, the translator projects some elements of the original text space and the target language space into the target language space, connecting the interaction between the source language author and the target language reader and activating the cultural cognitive framework of the target language reader. Conceptual blending theory provides a new cognitive perspective for the interpretation of children’s literature translation.

The study compares requests produced by Omani and American students. It examines the differences and similarities found in the types of requests produced in a Discourse Completion Test and the frequency of strategies employed for each speech act used. The results show that Omani students (non-native speakers) use fewer indirect request strategies in English than their American counterparts (native speakers). Linguistic differences are attributed to inadequate linguistic abilities among Omani students. This deficiency is anticipated to create problems such as the underuse of the past auxiliaries like could as opposed to present tense modals like can; the misuse of would; and the overuse of the lexical downgrader please in comparison to the underuse of external modifiers such as grounders, disarmers and sweeteners. Past auxiliaries were also found to be underused by Omanis due to the non-existence of these verbal forms in the Arabic language.

Politeness is one of the linguistic means in rhetorical construction, as the speaker seeks to avoid expressions that embody actions that threaten the social face, as verbal acts that contradict the desires of the recipients make them feel uncomfortable, and that the purpose of polite strategies is to mitigate the impact resulting from those actions, even if the use of those actions is exacerbated strategies that aggravate social face threats are called “social face aggravating actions,” meaning that polite strategies can be used in reverse to increase the social face threat of the recipient called “social face aggravating practices, candidates in presidential debates seek to appear positively to persuade the audience through polite strategies in verbal communication in polite behavior to show communicative competence in order to enhance their reputation, and to discredit the opponent by using these strategies inversely to increase the severity of acts of a social face threat.

This paper presents the results of a research study about the aspects of intercultural competence displayed in Ali Al-Kasimi’s Arabic translation of Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. The study attempts to determine how intercultural competence is manifested in the Arabic translation of Ali Al-Kasimi. It also seeks to identify the strategies that the translator resorted to in the translation of 50 culture specific elements in the source text. The aim is to develop an understanding of the ways in which intercultural competence can be displayed in the translation of literary texts. In addition, the main strategies that were used by the translator in translating cultural terms will be highlighted, analysed and discussed. By doing so, a comprehensive understanding of how to implement intercultural competence-based strategies in the translation of literary texts can be derived. The results of the study suggest that cultural adaptation and reframing are the two most used intercultural competence-based translation strategies by the translator.

MOOCs have gained undeniable popularity in the educational sphere in recent years, particularly in professional development. It is considered a novel opportunity for instructors to take charge of their Continuous Professional Development journeys. However, its reach remains minimal in the Moroccan EFL context. Hence, the present study sought to investigate the attitudes of a sample of Moroccan EFL teachers concerning the use of MOOCs as a form of CPD. Results revealed positive attitudes due to the customizable learning experiences these courses provide. These findings emphasize the conspicuous role that MOOCs could have in improving an overlooked sector in the Moroccan sphere. As such, the study at hand has the potential to contribute to the perpetual conversation on the adoption of MOOCs in teachers’ CPD, yielding a foundation for future research in the Moroccan educational landscape.

Movements of people and products across borders have always been accompanied by the flow of ideas and ways of life. This implicitly implies that intercultural encounters constantly take place. Cross-cultural interactions can go on smoothly if people understand each other’s differences, but misunderstandings are likely to happen when people are not familiar with each other’s cultural differences. Intercultural competence is needed so that people can avoid cultural misunderstandings. New players are gaining more ground internationally since international relations are no longer a purely political matter. Person-to-person encounters have become very important to strengthen relations among people who belong to different cultures. Cultural diplomacy has a great role to play in connecting nations and avoiding misunderstandings. Cultural diplomacy practices are designed for the mutual benefit of both participants. Hence, attraction and persuasion have become crucial concepts in contemporary international relations. Promoting a positive reputation overseas is not a new practice, but the ways and instruments once relied on have dramatically changed.

Multilingual speakers have often been found to be superior in taking another person’s perspective. Also, females are commonly found to have enhanced perspective-taking (PT) abilities compared with males, with male PT being generally more easily affected by external factors. Research on bilingual advantages has been widely verified in children, adults, and the elderly. However, few researchers have paid attention to the bilingual advantages and perspective-taking in adolescents. Perspective-taking skills are often associated with positive behaviors such as prosocial behavior and understanding others. In this study, we used a large and representative sample derived from the 2018 PISA survey to examine the relationship between bilingual experience, perspective-taking, and cognitive flexibility. The moderating effect of cultural individualism was also analyzed. The results of multi-level structural equation modeling (MSEM) indicate that: (1) foreign language learning is positively associated with perspective-taking and cognitive flexibility after controlling for individual-level and country-level demographic variables; (2) cognitive flexibility mediated the association between foreign language learning and perspective-taking; (3) the moderating effect of cultural individualism is significant. Specifically, in collectivist (vs. individualist) countries/societies, there is a stronger association between foreign language learning and perspective-taking.
