Arabic is a derivational language where words are formed from a root consisting of three or four consonants and a set of vowels that alternate with the root consonants. Different derivational patterns are used to derive agents, patients, nouns of place, time, occupation, appliances, tools, diseases, the diminutive and so on. In addition, Arabic has loan words from ancient, as well as modern languages. Not only has Arabic borrowed lexical items but has also borrowed few foreign affixes. A sample of hybrid lexemes containing the following foreign affixes -abad, aire-, anthropo, -ate , Turkish -dʒi, -cracy قراطية , -e, ethno-, -eme-, eine, el, Euro, geo, hydro-, -ic , -ide, ism, -ite, li, -logy, -one, -ous, phobia, -stan, socio-, -taria, -topia combined with Arabic bases was collected and examined to find out the following: (i) The status of borrowed affixes in Arabic and their status within the terminological structure; (ii) their denotative and connotative meanings; (iii) how productive they are; (iv) whether they are used in Standard or Colloquial Arabic; and (v) whether they are permanent or transient. Structural analysis of the corpus showed that specialized hybrid lexemes/compounds are more permanent than those used in political contexts during the Arab Spring or those used in a humorous context which appeared for a short time then disappeared. Specialized hybrid lexemes/compounds are used in Standard Arabic and formal contexts, whereas those used in political and humorous contexts are used in Colloquial Arabic. The former constitute a small set of lexical hybrids coined by specialists and Arabic language academies, whereas the latter are more prolific as they are created by activists, political analysts, journalists and social media users. Examples of hybrid lexemes/compounds containing borrowed affixes, results of the analysis and recommendations for translation are reported in detail.

The reductions in economic activities and mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic heavily challenged the global energy sector, due to which an energy crisis began to unfold in 2021. Under this social background, the linguistics community pay more and more attention to energy narrative in discourse. Based on Stibbe's definition and Fairclough's three-dimensional model, this study combined quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the ecological discourses of the New York Times reported during the energy crisis. This study found that the selected news discourses contain ecologically destructive elements and use the "Erasure of causality" strategy more frequently. Ecological discourse analysis of news discourse is conducive to deconstructing ecological destructive discourse and helping the public to further distinguish misleading and deceptive energy reports.

Bone is the impressive first novel written by Fae Myenne Ng, a first-generation Chinese American woman writer. Under the guidance of Gaston Bachelard’s and M. M. Bakhtin’s theories of space and Gérard Genette’s theories of narrative discourse, this paper probes into the narrative space and time in Ng’s Bone, trying to detect the protagonist’s escape consciousness revealed in the form of spatial and narrative escape. Leila’s individual escape, which derives from the family tragedy under the exploitation and expulsion of racial minorities in America, is, in fact, the epitome of every anxious Chinese American’s impulse to run away.

Bankimchandra Chatterjee’s representations of women have engendered much criticism and controversy in the light of feminist theory. The sexual objectification of the female body has been a concern of feminists for a number of years. Bankimchandra emphasizes the different positions of women and men in the contemporary social context. Gender is putting in these terms, constrains feminist thought within the framework of a virtually universal sex opposition. His changing conception of the female subject in the relations of subjectivity to society will be the focus of this paper.

The paper explores the potential of the flipped classroom model in language education, specifically for teaching grammar. The flipped model shifts traditional teaching by moving direct instruction outside class, allowing more engaging in-class activities. It also reverses teaching, putting direct instruction before class and interactive learning during class. It may stand language instructors in good stead, for it enhances engagement and comprehension. This experiment investigates its implementation, benefits, challenges, and impact on grammar learning outcomes. Notable among the challenges posed by this model, if instructors opt to avail themselves of its mechanisms, are technological barriers, including limited access to high-speed internet and a lack of compatible hardware. The study comprises an illustrative analysis that applies the model to instructing subject-verb agreement through pre-class activities, video content, quizzes, games, and essay assignments. The results palpably demonstrate an improved understanding and practical application of grammar. The flipped classroom offers transformative opportunities for language education, needing careful preparation and addressing tech challenges. It attempts to affect a qualitative leap in learning by using technology for content delivery and focusing on interactive in-class activities.

Sam Sheppard, a contemporary American playwright, is well-versed in the creation of family dramas, and Fool for Love is a good example. Sam Shepard focuses on the conflicts between family members in Fool for Love and describes a pair of half-brother and sister, Eddie and May, who are caught in an unforgettable incest love without knowing it. The male characters in Fool for Love show a series of discourse power relations with women as the mirror center and emphasize the male identity of "the single opposite of women/motherhood". However, male characters who are cheating and violent, such as "absent" father who is free from extramarital affairs and a violent son who is struggling with "incest" relationship, have neither established the positive image of ideal dominant masculinity nor become the "hero son" of mother, and found the "real father". In the social relationship, they also failed to fulfill the authoritative identity of self in the tyrannical behavior and even failed to gain the recognition of male identity in the performance of "non-female" temperament, which ultimately confirmed the lack of self-male identity. Based on the study of masculinity, this paper attempts to explore the causes of the lack of masculinity of father and son in the novel through a close reading of the text of Fool for Love and reveal the identity crisis and gender dysphoria faced by mainstream men in the American social background at that time.

This study attempts to explore the reflection of the connotative meanings in the translation of the Arabic lexical items qalil (few or little) and kathir (much or many) and their derivations from Arabic into English and Spanish. In order to conduct the study, some Qur’anic verses containing the two items are chosen, and two translations of the verses, English and Spanish, are selected to evaluate the portrayal of the connotative meanings of the two items in the translation. The study shows that the verses containing qalil and its derivations hold positive and favorable connotations and overtones, while the verses containing kathir and its derivations hold negative ones. It shows that the translation challenge of the antonymous lexical items qalil and kathir does not lie in their denotative meaning, but rather in the connotative one. It further reveals that lexical items can be concurrently antonymous at the denotative and connotative levels, a semantic fact that should be given enough attention in translation. The study concludes that since literal translation does not convey the various implications of lexical items, exegetic translation is suggested as an appropriate translation strategy to transfer these implications.

Edward Albee’s Seascape is a well-crafted Pulitzer Prize-winning play. This two-act play features a recently retired American couple, Charlie and Nancy, who were idling their time on a sun-soaked beach and having a conversation about future plan, and suddenly a lizard-like nonhuman couple Leslie and Sarah, came from undersea to the land. This essay argues that Seascape is pregnant with Posthumanist wisdom with which we might get access to a better understanding of our place on our planet and foster a more harmonious cohabitation with our fellow humans and other species. Albee’s Seascape is a forceful attempt to deconstruct the boundaries that human set up to distinguish themselves from the world and dissolve the anthropocentric dualistic epistemologies that separate land and sea, men and women, and human and nonhuman. The cross-species encounter in Seascape yields to arguments that starkly subvert human’s long-established stereotypical assumptions about themselves, opening up our eyes to see multiplicity and diversity through the prism of Posthumanism.

Since the 1950s, the influence of individual differences in second language acquisition has received widespread attention, and each learner's individual differences affect the success of second language acquisition. However, the research on individual differences is very complex. In order to further investigate how individual differences affect the second language acquisition process, this paper starts from three aspects of individual differences influencing factors: (1) the study of general individual factors of second language learners, such as age, gender and cognitive style; (2) the study of second language learners' attitudes and motivation, such as learners' attitudes toward learning the target language, learners' research on second language learners' attitudes and motivations, such as learners' attitudes toward the target language, learners' attitudes toward the social and cultural background of the target language, integration motivation and instrumental motivation (3) research on second language learners' strategies, such as learners' cognitive strategies, learners' meta-cognitive strategies and learners' social strategies, in order to explore the effects of these individual factors in second language acquisition, so as to find countermeasures that can really help improve second language learners' learning efficiency and further improve and develop better The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of these individual factors on second language acquisition, so as to find out the measures that can really help improve the learning efficiency of second language learners, and further improve and develop a better method of teaching foreign languages according to their abilities.

Colson Whitehead, a well-known contemporary African American writer, who has won the Pulitzer Prize twice. The Nickel Boys won the Pulitzer Prize in 2019, and the novel takes the tragic experience of black teenagers in the Nickel Academy Reformatory School as the main line of the story. This paper applies Judith Herman’s trauma theory to analyze the physical and psychological trauma faced by the characters in the novel, as well as the causes of this trauma. The racism and prejudice that the black people suffered have been deeply affecting their living and mental state. At the same time, this paper discusses the possible ways to realize the recovery of trauma with the theory of trauma and recovery. Through the trauma study, we can see that under the combined stress of these traumas, African Americans suffer from a great blow in their body and spirit. The causes of the trauma are multidimensional and are the result of a combination of historical and social factors. For example, the segregation system is responsible for the trauma of African Americans. At the end of the paper, it discusses ways for black people to come out of trauma. Trauma recovery is a complex and difficult process in which black people must rely on their own efforts and help from the black community to achieve trauma recovery. It can be said that Whitehead’s exploration of the trauma recovery in the novels shows his realistic concern for African Americans and even human beings.
