Design and Simulation of Broadband Beam Splitter on a Silicon Nitride Platform for Optical Coherence Tomography 光学相干层析成像氮化硅平台宽带分束器的设计与仿真

ABSTRACT Integrated photonics enables the miniaturization of bulk optical components for biosensing applications such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and is therefore promising for future lab-on-chip solutions. Here, we report the design and simulation of a compact low loss broadband beam splitter with arbitrary coupling ratios on silicon nitride platform for OCT systems. The reported coupler uses asymmetric waveguide-based phase control section for 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, and 50:50 splitting ratios and is broadband over 100 nm with the central wavelength of 850 nm. The couplers are realized for transverse electric, transverse magnetic, and fully vectorial modes, and maximum excess loss for all mode types is reported to be less than 0.19 dB. The design tolerance of waveguide width and thickness of the designed coupler is further calculated and is within fabrication limit.

ABSTRACT By incorporating double-ring cavities and a piece of un-pumped Er3+-doped fiber (EDF) as a saturable absorber, we report a single-longitude-mode EDF fiber laser at C-band. The single-longitude-mode is obtained, the first time, by inserting only two subring cavities in either serial connection or parallel connection. The fiber laser has an optical signal-to-noise-ratio of 34.5 dB and a maximum power fluctuation of less than 1.3% for 1-hr operation. It was then modulated up to 10 Gbit/s by using an electro-optic modulator for eye diagrams, compared to back-to-back transmission. Such a compact and low-cost fiber laser is potential for high-speed optical communication.

ABSTRACT A frequency-doubled microwave photonic phase shifter (MPPS) without optical filter is proposed. The MPPS is based on an integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM) and a polarization modulator (PolM). The DP-DPMZM with a 90° polarization rotator in one arm is used to generate an optical carrier suppressed double sideband (OCS-DSB) signal with orthogonal polarization, and the PolM with two modes opposite phase modulation is used to introduce the optical phase shift between the two orthogonally polarized tones. Simulations show that the MPPS can realize a continuously tunable phase shift of 360° with only one DC bias voltage, and is not sensitive to the optical carrier wavelength and microwave signal frequency since no optical filter is used.

ABSTRACT This work presents an electro-optic effect-based design for the widely used Hamming code for checking single bit errors in the received data. The structure is based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, designed using Titanium-diffused Lithium Niobate-based waveguides. The proposed device has been successfully tested using the beam propagation method. For a received 7-bit code, the three simultaneously generated check bits are combined to check the error position. Critical performance parameters like extinction ratio (24.39dB), contrast ratio (25.711dB), insertion loss (0.041dB), and amplitude modulation (0.079dB) calculated for the overall device are within acceptable limits for the feasibility of the device.

ABSTRACT Fiber-optic communication breakthroughs are presented every year at the Optical Communication Conference, OFC. This paper reviews some of the key papers presented at the OFC 2019, held March 3 through 7 in San Diego, CA. Some of the conference themes were: Data Center Connectivity, 5G Networks, and major advances in components and in communication systems. The Conference stressed the work carried out by the Optical Internetworking Forum, OFI, which developed the 400 ZR standard for 400 Gigabit fiber modules. ABSTRACT The effect of glass composition, pure silica glass, boron-doped and fluorine-doped silica glasses of inner cladding, in the germano-silicate glass core fibers on optical and mechanical properties upon the γ-ray irradiation was investigated. Enhanced radiation hardening at 1,550 nm was found in both the B- and F-doped fibers after the γ-ray irradiation with dose-rate of 1.25 kGy/h. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) was found to increase in the order of the B-doped fiber, the F-doped fiber, and the silica fiber. While no major influence on the refractive index of the fibers after the γ-ray irradiation was found, the residual stress was slightly changed.

Design of a Novel Mid-Infrared Single-Polarization Single-Mode Photonic Crystal Fiber with Low Loss, High Nonlinearity, and Large Bandwidth 新型低损耗、高非线性、大带宽中红外单偏振单模光子晶体光纤的设计

ABSTRACT A novel mid-infrared Ge20Sb15Se65 chalcogenide-based single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with rectangular latticed circular air holes is proposed. The properties of SPSM bandwidth, confinement loss, and nonlinearity are analyzed in the 3 μm~8 μm mid-infrared region using the finite -difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The influences of different geometrical parameters on the properties of SPSM-PCF are analyzed. All numerical computational results reveal that for the optimized geometrical parameters, the proposed PCF can deliver a SPSM region of more than 2.3814 μm with high nonlinearity of 3,705 w−1 km−1. Therefore, such a SPSM-PCF will become an excellent candidate for mid-infrared photonic.

ABSTRACT We report on the theoretical design and simulation of a photonic quantum circuit that operates as a single-photon, two-qubit swap gate. In this approach, the circuit is implemented in Titanium indiffused LiNbO3 channel waveguides, and polarization and spatial encoding are utilized to realize the qubits. Simulations are carried out by making use of the numerical beam propagation method incorporated within RSoft program package.

ABSTRACT A laser and acoustooptic frequency shifter jointed Pound-Drever-Hall technique is designed to lock the resonant optical gyroscope. Utilizing direct digital synthesizer (DDS) technology and temperature control in the driver, the frequency-shift precision of the acoustooptic frequency shifter higher than 1 Hz is obtained. Experiments show that compared with locking by tuning the laser only, the zero-bias stability of the gyroscope is improved. In this locking scheme, there are few additional devices, the tuning of the laser and the acoustooptic frequency shifter share a common Pound-Drever-Hall locking system, and the demodulation and the locking algorithms are simple.

Q-Switched Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser with Pure Titanium-Film-Based Saturable Absorber 纯钛膜基饱和吸收器调q掺铥光纤激光器

ABSTRACT We demonstrate the generation of Q-switching pulse train in thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) cavity by employing titanium-based saturable absorber (Ti-SA). The Ti-SA was fabricated by depositing titanium particles molecules using electron beam evaporation on the surface of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film. Subsequently, stable Q-switched pulses were obtained within the 1,552 nm pump power range from 272.1 to 467 mW, with repetition rate tuned from 21.8  to 39.1 kHz. At the maximum pump power, the TDFL showed that the pulse duration of 2.22 μs and the maximum pulse energy of 124 nJ.
