Abstract We report the development and validation of the Multicultural Personality Inventory – Short Form (MPI-SF). Results supported the correlated seven-factor model with a sample of 333 college students. Scores from MPI-SF factors were internally consistent, temporally stable over a one- and two-month period, and predicted variance in college adjustment consistent with multicultural personality theory.

Abstract We examined the validity of the Shorter Psychotherapy and Counseling Evaluation (Halstead, Leach, & Rust, 2007). Results supported incremental predictive validity (up to 12%) over the Outcome Questionnaire–10.2 (OQ–10.2), predictive validity with the Outcome Questionnaire–45 and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems–32, and convergent validity with the OQ–10.2.

Abstract Empathy has been linked to therapeutic alliance and positive client outcomes. However, the operationalization of empathy varies in definition and measurement, presenting challenges for assessment. This study describes the formulation of the Empathic Counselor Response Scale (ECRS), examines scale properties using Rasch analysis, and considers future directions for analysis.

Abstract This study explored internal consistency (α = .834), test-retest (rtt = .911), convergent validity, and internal structural validity of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on a large university student sample. The 2-factor model fit the data best and measurement invariance was demonstrated for Latinx, but not undergraduate/graduate levels.

Abstract This study examined the degree that reliability coefficients for scores on the PTGI generalize across participant and study characteristics. Meta-analytic procedures resulted in observed and predicted mean alpha coefficients ranging from acceptable to excellent and appeared to be largely unrelated to the participant characteristics included in our meta-regression modeling procedures.

Abstract The authors present the development and examination of the Client Assessment of Multicultural Competent Behavior (CAMCB) scores. The CAMCB was designed to measure therapists’ multicultural competent behaviors within the context of therapeutic process, from clients’ perspective. In this article, three-phases of the study are presented detailing (a) the development and administration of the CAMCB to a sample of clients (Phase 1), (b) exploration of the initial factor structure of CAMCB items (Phase 2, exploratory factor analysis [EFA]; N = 281), and (c) the cross-validation of the CAMCB exploratory factor structure and examination of convergent validity (Phase 3, confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]; N = 282). The EFA results identified a 23-item three-factor CAMCB exploratory model, accounting for 53.78% of the variance. The CFA results validated a three-factor oblique 19-item CAMCB model, accounting for 59.88% of the variance, and evidence of convergent validity was supported by a positive and yet small to moderate correlation between the CAMCB and Cross-Cultural Counseling Inventory-Revised-7 scale scores (r = .246, p < .001).

Abstract Empathy for mental health professionals is often inferred from dispositional assessments that misrepresent the temporal, contextual, and multidimensional nature of empathy. This article presents the State-Interpersonal Reactivity Index, a multidimensional assessment of in-session empathy for mental health professionals. Results suggest good construct and incremental validity evidence for participant scores.

Abstract This study describes the development and initial testing of the Multidimensional Cultural Humility Scale (MCHS), a counselor-report scale to measure a counselor’s cultural humility, with a sample of 861 participants. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and internal reliability coefficients revealed evidence for the convergent and discriminant validity and internal reliability of scores on the scale.

Abstract This study assessed factorial invariance of scores from the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms − 34 (CCAPS-34) across military (n = 2,836) and nonmilitary (n = 2,836) students accessing counseling services between 2014 and 2016. Based on factorial invariance tests, findings suggest the CCAPS-34 measures the same constructs across both groups.

Abstract We assessed the psychometric properties of the visual analog scale (VAS) form of the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) using item response theory (IRT) with a sample of 2,109 Canadian counseling clients. Findings indicate that the ORS was unidimensional and that the equal-interval assumption was not tenable for the VAS.
