Elementary classroom teachers are an increasingly important constituency in school-based physical activity promotion. This article situates the need for classroom teacher physical-activity promotion at the intersection of what we know about teacher actions, what informs those actions, and what recent research has uncovered. Recommendations are provided for ways in which physical education teacher educators and inservice physical education teachers can help classroom teachers to promote physical activity among their students.

Many students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) fall short of the recommended physical activity levels and experience challenges in physical activity and physical education settings. This article reviews factors that can improve the physical activity statistics of students with ASD, outlines the researched benefits of physical activity for students with ASD, and summarizes previously published strategies for success in physical education. It serves as a tool for teachers who wish to promote best practices and advocate for quality movement programs for these students.

Physical education teachers are expected to implement the English language arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in their instruction. This has proved to be challenging for many physical educators. The purpose of this article is to provide developmentally appropriate examples of how to incorporate the ELA CCSS into physical education, while at the same time aligning the CCSS with the new national physical education content standards and grade-level outcomes.

A lawsuit was filed alleging that negligence on the part of Victor Hurtuk, a physical education teacher, led to Sara Whittemore's falling on her upper back from a height of approximately four feet during a “levitation” parachute activity in physical education class.

The use of scuba diving as a recreational activity within traditional university instructional programs has been well established. Departments focusing on kinesiology, physical education, or exercise science have often provided scuba diving lessons as part of their activity-based course offerings. However, few departments have developed an academic scuba diving minor designed to meet the professional needs of students interested in both a scuba-based career and a traditional kinesiology profession. The Department of Kinesiology at Western Illinois University has developed and implemented an academic minor in scuba diving designed to provide unique academic and professional preparation for students interested in diving as a professional career. Students from a variety of academic majors, including kinesiology, are benefitting from courses designed to prepare students scientifically, technically, and academically for future employment in recreational, law-enforcement, and scientific careers utilizing scuba diving skills and techniques. The purpose of this article is to highlight the development and usefulness of this unique program and discuss its significance to an academic department in kinesiology and to the overall professional field.

Injuries may occur more often in physical education due to the nature of the activities taught. Because of this, the issue of negligence is an important concern. Risk management is one method physical educators use to decrease the occurrence of injuries and negligence. The purpose of this article is to introduce a Risk Management Inventory that was developed for public school physical educators to measure risk in the areas of equipment and facilities, supervision, instruction, emergency and medical procedures, and administrative behaviors. Learning through observation and modeling, risk management inventory development, and the validity of the Inventory will be discussed.
