This qualitative study, designed by nursing professional development specialists, explored novice nurses' experiences working during the first COVID-19 surge of 2020. Semistructured focus group interviews were conducted in June-December 2020 with 23 novice nurses who cared for patients with COVID-19 in March-April 2020. Sixteen themes were identified under three broad categories (viz., stimuli, coping, and adaptation). These themes and participant exemplars are shared along with recommendations on how best to support novice nurses working through the ongoing pandemic.

Interactive strategies to teach nurse residents about evidence-based practice (EBP) can instill the confidence to question practice and ensure best care for patients. A nurse residency program with the Mission Possible theme transformed nurses into EBP agents that must solve the EBP process, step-by-step. Clues interspersed with didactic lessons guide the teams through the EBP mission. This creative option for teaching EBP may assist other educators in finding interactive learning opportunities for this content.

Second victim phenomenon (SVP) occurs when nurses who are involved in an unanticipated adverse event become victimized and traumatized by the event. Following a needs assessment, an SVP education program was implemented, including adverse events and SVP experiences, available support, and a case study. Evaluation indicated nurses had improved knowledge and attitude and increased practice intent. Education that promotes awareness is the first step to support nurses who experience events that can precipitate SVP.

Nursing professional development practitioners are integral leaders who continue to seek tangible ways to show their value. A tool was designed to capture workload based upon the scope and standards of nursing professional development practice and successfully captured the workload of over 200 practitioners. The measures used in this project can serve as a guide for others to describe nursing professional development practitioner workload.

A novice director of nursing education and professional practice started her first formal leadership role in a new hospital and a new organization. This article will discuss tactics used within the first 6 months in the role that helped the director integrate into the hospital and leadership teams, improve team structure and processes, and improve employee engagement scores.

Using an observational design, new graduate nurses' perceptions of job satisfaction and resignation ideation during COVID-19 were explored. Higher job satisfaction was associated with higher self-confidence, lower stress, and working in first choice of unit. A higher likelihood of resignation ideation was associated with coworker incivility, higher stress, and not working in first choice unit. New graduate nurses need support from nursing professional development practitioners for challenges faced throughout the transition-to-practice year.

New graduate nurses often lack professional confidence to voice safety concerns. An evidence review was conducted to determine how participating in a mentorship program impacts the development of assertive communication during the first year of practice. Evidence indicates that providing a supportive environment, with physical and emotional access to mentors, should be used to increase new graduate nurses' self-perceived ability and willingness to voice safety concerns.
