Thomas Luckmann and Hans-Georg Soeffner never shared a direct teacher-scholar-relationship. But both represent a sociological approach, rooted in phenomenology, and both treat everyday life, Religion and knowledge (among others) as their research subjects. In contrast my interests focus on political and economic problems, on European integration, social security and things like that. We found a broad common ground for our debate anyway, much more than we are able to document in this protocol. Perhaps this is because we tacitly agree in the following: In order to explain the development of institutions, one has to understand the way people act. And in order to understand peoples’ actions one has to observe how people observe social reality. But perhaps another thing matters as well. It quickly turned out that we three are heavily inclined to irony and – yes – nonsense. Thus, to me the debate with Thomas Luckmann and Hans-Georg Soeffner was impressive and fun. I really hope the protocol reveals this.

The subject of this article deals with the manner in which emotions have so far been considered in sociological migration studies. Existing works focus primarily on emotions in a pathological or therapeutic way, so it has to be stated, that the often postulated emotional turn in social sciences has not yet fully reached the area of migration. So the valuable analytical potential of a perspective based on the sociology of emotions is not completely exploited because that would imply focusing on the general functions of emotions in contexts of migration. This article introduces interesting works which already deal with the carrying concepts of emotion work and emotional transnationality and suggests guidelines on how to broaden these analytical views in a non-pathological direction.

This article wants to explore the associative relationship between epidemics, lack of hygiene and foreignness that German people, politicians and the German press have made repeatedly during the recent wave of migration from Syria to Germany. It wants to especially look at the emotions of fear, anger and the resulting hate that not only pull these two things together but that combine being a health risk and being a stranger in a way that they create a vicious circle in which one perpetuates the other and creates a condition in which one always serves as a justification for the other. We will present the relationships among fear, anger, and hate empirically by reflecting on a few interviews carried out in Germany, three press articles and people’s comments in the press, on Facebook and other social media that have surfaced after a small outbreak of scabies in a refugee camp in the Jenfelder Moorpark in Hamburg. The outbreak was neither medically meaningful nor caused by a lack of the refugees’ hygiene, but rather as a consequence of the bad hygienic conditions that were to be found in the provisional refugee camp. However, this little but crucial part of information never really entered into the wider public debate—partly because the local German press only focused on the outbreak itself rather than on its causes and partly because the current social context has created a lack of confidence in the press, from both sides of civil society. Instead of critical reflections on causes and backgrounds, the majority of commenting readers pronounced publically the hypothetical link between their fears of both foreigners and epidemics and used the story as a bond-maker, allowing them to create a collective emotional reaction with others based on their projected fears. Within this process of collective projection fear turned into anger, as a collective form to face individual fear, resulting in the sensation of a need for collective self-defence, a sensation that their Society Must be Defended (Foucault, 2003).

Live music is a social and artistic activity where all its participants establish a set of relationships in real time, mediated by different musical, social, psychological and environmental factors. The aim of this research is to study the relationships between audiences and musicians and their influence in the processes that lead to the generation of emotions and the creation of meaning. By taking a transdisciplinary view, I am trying to bridge some of the divides that frequently appear in music research (object-activity, aesthetic-social, etc.) and so I want to go beyond common artificial investigations about emotions and meaning in music by reflecting on the complex nature of real music experiences. The methodological approach is mainly qualitative — based on observations, and interviews; however, some quantitative data from a survey have also been taken into account. The research has been carried out as a case study that had the concerts of El Teatre Instrumental, an orchestra that specialises in the repertoire of the classical period, as its object.
