Esta investigación busca y analiza el vocabulario que se usó para hablar de sexo en Castilla entre el siglo X y la primera mitad del XVI con dos objetivos. El primero, el averiguar con exactitud qué léxico se utilizaba a la hora de hablar de sexualidad en general, de las zonas erógenas del cuerpo humano y del acto sexual. El segundo, descubrir la carga simbólica que había detrás de estas palabras y que indican algunas conclusiones generales sobre lo que las gentes de Castilla entendían y sentían sobre su sexualidad en la Edad Media.

Time and space are of foremost importance in the dramatic economy of medieval epic poems because they serve the important function of situating the reader spatially and chronologically. In the Cantar de Mio Cid, the poet places particular emphasis on the theme of time, enumerating the years, months, weeks, and days for his reader to present his narrative as a verisimilar, if not historic, chronicle. This study seeks to interrogate the time that elapses from the beginning of the poem to the end, arguing that the poet’s penchant for relative chronological precision betrays an effort to convey his story as historical fact. His ability to weave fiction and reality has greatly contributed to the Cantar’s timelessness, one that renders it relevant even in our modern society. The representation of time helps create the illusion of realism, helping to humanize Rodrigo Díaz and heightening the dramatic impact of the poem.

In his best-seller and adventure novel Sidi. An Account of the Frontier (2019), Arturo Pérez-Reverte recreates part of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar᾿s first exile already portrayed in the first part of the Cantar de Mio Cid. This recreation aims to awake more interest in Spanish medieval history and to redress the Cid᾿s image after its manipulation during Franco᾿s times. The aim of this study is to analyze the heroic image of Cid in Pérez-Reverte᾿s fiction—an image in line with that presented by historians—and the representation of violence and brutality among Christians and Muslims in the eleventh-century frontier world. Though war idealization may not be easily avoided in the biography of a legendary hero, Pérez-Reverte still provides a nuanced, critical representation of violence. However, his focus is laid on a different character, Diego Ordoñez rather than Rodrigo Díaz, who emerges as a bi-cultural hero who has developed powerful leadership skills—that is, a model of hero arguably more suitable for modern times.

Jiménez de Rada᾽s De rebus Hispaniae was highly resonant in peninsular historiography, and its narrative expression was also conveyed in the form of romanceamientos. Critics have already shown that the Estoria de los godos, anonymous and difficult to date, is the most distant configuration from the Toledano᾽s account. This study focuses on the sections of the romanceamiento dedicated to the reign of Alfonso VI. The comparative reading, supported by narratological tools, makes it possible to highlight the rigor and complexity of the redaction of this work. This approach provides clues about its context of production, while the detected particularities —especially, the treatment of the Cid᾽s trayectory— allow us to reevaluate the position of the Estoria de los godos in the memoristic interactions of the late 13th century.
