Th e history of the Roma population on the Croatian area was marked by the periods in which the Roma faced the impact of the repressive and assimilatory policy of the state and local authorities towards them. Th e period of the reign of Maria Th eresa and Joseph II was marked by such a policy, as they issued numerous decrees on Roma. Th e main goal of this policy was to reform the status of the Roma population by ordering them the forced sedentarization, the prohibition of their identity, e.g. their name, the use of their language and customs, doing their traditional professions and so on. As the result of such a policy, the Roma should have become the integrated part of the Habsburg society. Th e similar enlightened policy toward the Roma was conducted by the other European rulers as well. Th is paper is based on the research of the archival fonds of the Croatian State Archives, as well as the analysis of the relevant literature.

Based on the available documents, the author has analysed the connections between converts to Islam and the Christian part of their families, and the way in which the conversions infl uenced the lives of converts and their Christian relatives. Adopting another religion did not mean abandoning the old habits and Christian traditions. Regardless of the change of religion and the new religious practices they had to follow, there were those who continued living in accordance with the Christian tradition. Th e converts’ contacts with their Christian families contributed to that considerably. Th e diff erence in name and religion did not break family ties even when families were separated.

The paper shows how Maria Th eresa’s legacy was remembered and highlighted alreadyin the late 19th century within the realm of musical culture. Focusing on the genre ofoperetta and taking The Gypsy Baron (1885) by Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) as anexample the paper touches upon the issues of propaganda and collective memory asconjured up by musical theatre. Considered ‘a musical monument to the Austro-HungarianEmpire’ The Gypsy Baron (originally Der Zigeunerbaron) ultimately reveals theposition the “King” Maria Th eresia cherished in the 19th century Empire, being at thesame time a fine example of the legacy of her politics. The pillars of the operetta’s plotare wars fought by Austrians: the Austro–Turkish War and the War of the Austrian Succession(1740-1748). The operetta is clearly the work inscribed into the specific politicalsituation of the late 19th century and constituted a musical response to concrete needsstimulated by civil attitudes. Hence the situation depicted in The Gypsy Baron reflectsthe multi-ethnic diversity of Habsburg Empire and the operetta’s overall message isto glorify the cooperation between various nations as (supposedly) facilitated underMaria Theresa’s reign.

Flags from Maria Theresa’s era had regulated guidelines that had to be obeyed in orderto produce the most representative as well as the most typical baroque banners. Theongoing military reforms launched by Maria Theresa, in conjunction with state-governingreorganizations, are also mirrored in the Collection of Flags and Streamers atthe Croatian History Museum. In particular, there are four main representative flagsthat, on the one hand, show the practice of exhibiting statehood statuses by means ofdynastic symbols on battalion standards, and on the other indicate the iconographicsignificance of saints and beatified kings on ceremonial and commemorative banners. These instructions were all done under the impression of the baroque style, the Age ofEnlightenment, and the turbulent time of confl ict in Maria Th eresa’s reign.
