The paper deals with the Italian system of second reception for asylum seekers and refugees, specifically focusing on the case of the Milan Metropolitan Area. Through a series of in-depth interviews with guests of the SAI Project (Sistema di Accoglienza e Integrazione), the research aims at assessing opportunities and obstacles encountered by forced migrants during their integration process. Particular attention is also paid to the socio-territorial characteristics of the municipalities examined, in order to outline some lines of development for the construction of an inclusive urban space.

Social geography cannot be confined to a theoretical dimension, however necessary: it is expected to play an active role, to encourage encounters with social actors and stakeholders, to take on a dimension of public engagement. Even in Italy this dimension is increasingly important, as universities are placing a growing value on their so-called third mission. Social geography must then address the fundamental issue of participation and its techniques. In doing so, those who graduate in geography will also be able to claim an essential role in the management of decision-making processes and participatory planning. This paper explores some methods and approaches that younger geographers can use to build the ‘toolbox’ of their future profession, looking at a case study from the city of Palermo.

We consider the theme of urban gardens as a privileged observation of socioeconomic and environmental changes in a city. These can be highlighted inside urban areas, in historical city centres or even in suburban places. During the nineteenth-century new allotments where an opportunity for workers of the industry as a food integration but also to improve health and relational aspects. The situation has not changed, and we can see how societies satisfy these needs: the more complex, nowadays a city becomes, in its forms, functions and ways of interacting, the greater the utility of a multiform and always changing horticultural activity.

This interview focuses on the research project “Il rumore lontano” (The distant noise), undertaken at the DFA - Dipartimento Formazione e Apprendimento of SUPSI in 2017. The project, coordinated by Xabier Erkizia and Lorena Rocca, aimed at investigating the potential of soun to identify the cultural and geographical characteristics of Canton Ticino through its railway network. The sanatorium Morelli was built in Sondalo during the fascist era (1932-1940). The strong visual impact of the structure is counterbalanced by a delicate acoustic approach, made necessary by the need to create silent places for supporting medical treatments. The project of “silence” is not only the result of a punitive stance, which simply intends to reduce sound emissions, but above all the effect of a positive attitude, aiming at selecting specific sounds, in accordance with the social and environmental characteristics of place. This produces the sense of participation and identification of the users, generating collective cares and protection. That of Morelli, indeed, is a relevant lesson for the contemporary reflection, with a view to finding good strategies for soundscape design.

On Saturday 17 May 2014, a special initiative by the SPASS (Sinergie fra Pratiche Artistiche e Spostamenti Sostenibili / Synergies between Artistic Practices and Sustainable Mobility) research group of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) was presented between Intragna and Locarno, involving the public in an itinerant staging of Carlo Gozzi’s Re cervo (King Deer), as part of the hypothesis of a link between art, culture and sustainability issues. In the interview, the Accademia Teatro Dimitri’s voice teacher Antonella Astolfi reflects on the experience.

Over the last few decades there has been a proliferation of different fields of study directly derived from what can now be defined as a real discipline: the soundscape. Because of the growing number of new subjects, it becomes really challenging to get out of the multitude of publications, authors and terminologies, in order to create a synthetic and exhaustive bibliography dealing with the primary subject from which the various fields of study branched out. Starting from this difficulty this work was born, a bibliographic research aiming to direct the reader towards a targeted literature in the field of soundscape and music composition.

This article wants to explore the topic of the soundscape in the context of dance and video, especially in the site-specific creation process of dance live performances and video dance, with a brief mention to a particular type of audiovisual installations. The exploration develops starting from the soundscape that two dancing bodies produce merely moving in a dance rehearsal room, it continues with the description of a soundscape composed with sounds detected by a specific environment, and it ends with the analysis of the dance movie Car Men, by Paval Conen. The final reflections start from an example of dramaturgical use of sound in the context of film production and arrive at the description of laser drawing performance as a final example of perceptive complexity.
