STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING THESIS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM IN MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SUMATERA BARAT 苏门答腊岛默罕默迪亚大学英语教育研修班学生写论文的困难

This research is about difficulties faced by the students in writing thesis at eight semester of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat. The purpose of the research is to describe the students’ difficulties in writing the thesis. The participants of this research were eight semester students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat that consist of 15 students. This research is a descriptive research. It is aimed at describing things as the way and also analyzing the interrelationship of the data. The instrument used in this research was questioner and interview. The questioner is used to find out the students’ difficulties in writing thesis while the interview is used to support the data gotten from questioner. The result of this research shows that there are 13 difficulties faced by students in writing thesis. And the most frequent difficulties is “pouring ideas into scientific writing”. All of the students (15) faced this difficulty.
本研究是针对苏门答腊岛穆罕默迪耶大学英语教育研究项目八学期学生在撰写论文时所面临的困难进行的。本研究的目的是描述学生在撰写论文时遇到的困难。这项研究的参与者是苏门答腊巴拉特穆罕默迪耶大学英语教育研究项目的八个学期的学生,共有15名学生。本研究为描述性研究。它旨在将事物描述为方式,并分析数据的相互关系。本研究采用问卷调查和访谈相结合的方法。提问者用于找出学生在论文写作中的困难,而访谈则用于支持提问者提供的数据。研究结果表明,学生在论文写作中共面临13个方面的困难。最常见的困难是“将思想注入科学写作”。所有的学生(15名)都面临这个困难。

IDENTITY DISCOURSE IN BALIKUI AND AIDS SHORT STORY BY PUTU WIJAYA 普图·维加亚短篇小说《巴里魁与艾滋病》中的身份话语

The role of literature today is not only as an imaginative work but as an expression of social, cultural and political criticism. One of the writers who is famous for voicing his criticism of the social phenomena that occur in Indonesia is Putu Wijaya. Two of his short stories that discuss cultural values are Balikui and Aids. The focus of this research is on the identity that appears in the characters in the two short stories by utilizing Michael Foucault's theory of discourse analysis. The results of this study indicate that in the Balikui short story, the identity of the character Wayan cannot be melted, even though he is in America for a few weeks as in disciplining time. In the short story Aids, it shows the existence of Indonesian cultural identity that corruption is a plague that is more dangerous than Aids.

PORTRAYING HEDONISM IN CRAZY RICH ASIAN NOVEL BY KEVIN KWAN 关凯文小说中对享乐主义的刻画

Modern society has the view that hedonism is a lifestyle that only emphasizes pleasure such as shopping for luxury goods and eating expensive food. This is contrary to the simple lifestyle proposed by Epicureans. Epicureans distinguish between natural desires that are needed (such as eating) and natural desires that are allowed (such as delicious food), and vain desires (such as wealth) (K. Bertens, 2000). Therefore, hedonism does not always have to prioritize luxury but can improve the quality of enjoyment itself. Evolving the issue of flexing in society is often done by the youth as a negative stigma yet it could be positive if it is seen from a different angle. This study also identifies the influence of hedonism on the main character's life. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative method to analyze the data as it is concerned with the subjective assessment of attitudes, opinions, and behavior. The finding of this research was that natural desires are allowed to have the effect of being able to (1) enjoy life more, (2) have a high social spirit, and (3) be wise in dealing with problems. The impact of vain desires tends to be (1) anti-social, (2) excessive consumptive behavior, and (3) unsatisfactory

EFL TEACHERS SELF-REPORTED DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AT KEFTEGNA 23 SECONDARY SCHOOL, ETHIOPIA 埃塞俄比亚keftegna 23中学英语教师自我报告的差异化教学实践

The purpose of this study was to explore selected high school English teachers self-reported differentiated instructional practices that haven’t been addressed in the Ethiopian EFL context. To achieve this purpose, data was collected using questionnaire for EFL teachers and semi-structured interview students. The selected EFL teachers filled the questionnaire based on their willingness and the students were randomly selected from two sections and interviewed to cross-check the data obtained from their EFL teachers. The students were interviewed in Amharic and transcribed in to English and the data were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study indicated that EFL teachers’ perceive that their English classes are composed of students’ with different learning achievement levels consisting of very struggling, grade level and advanced students but instructional practices were not adequately responsive to the students different readiness levels. They rated their students as grade level/average achievers and take this group in to account while delivering English lessons. Besides, results showed that teaching to the middle level is most preferable. Findings further showed that EFL teachers had no experience of pre-assessing students’ different readiness levels or current status to make informed decisions, and hardly modify instruction and highly depend on textbook activities/tasks. Results from the interview further indicated that students experiencing or receiving the EFL teachers’ instructional practices were not perceived favorably. Thus, it is evident to conclude that the EFL teachers’ instructional practices were undifferentiated and it is suggested EFL teachers should get awareness trainings to integrate DI in to their teaching.

TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES IN ELT PROCESS DURING AND POST THE PANDEMIC IN RURAL AREA 疫情期间和疫情后农村地区ELT过程中的技术挑战

Our education world is facing a very different situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic where these last few years, teaching and learning activities must be done online. However, the implementation of English online learning in remote areas did not go well due to the lack of teachers' and students’ ability in using technology in learning English during and post the pandemic. Therefore, the study was conducted to see how the correlation between the teachers’ competence, students' attitude, and the rural environment in affecting the use of technology in the English teaching and learning process during and post-pandemic. In this study, interview and observation were conducted to collect the data. The result of the study showed that there were some correlations between the rural environment, students’ attitudes, and teachers’ competence in facing the technology challenges in learning the English process during and post the pandemic. Teachers and students were difficult to adjust with the use of technology due to limited facilities in a rural area, lack of skill in using the technology, and negative attitudes that decrease students' motivation in learning English during the pandemic. However, improvement was also found in the post-pandemic, where the students and teachers could improve their competence in using technology media in learning English. The result showed that the students showed high motivation when the teacher delivered material and gave assignments using technology. Furthermore, teachers are also able to improve their teaching competence in creating teaching media based on technology use in the post-pandemic.

READING HABITS AND THE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL AMONG EFL LEARNERS 英语学习者的阅读习惯与写作能力

The study aims to find out the reading habits of EFL students to find out the writing skill of students and to find out a significant relationship between students' reading habits and the writing skill of students in the informatics engineering study program UNISLA. The method of study is quantitative with a correlation descriptive design. The data collection is documentation of students’ score in portfolio writing and the questionnaire’s score of reading habits. The instruments of research are the report mark of students’ writing ability and the questionnaire. The finding showed that the value of “r” is 0.41. It means that the correlation between students' reading habits and writing skill between English learners of Informatics Engineering at UNISLA in the academic year 2021/2022 were "Fairly High Correlation". A grade of r (0.41) ≥ of r-table (0.317) proves that Ha is accepted, so there is a significant relationship between students' reading habits and writing skill between Informatics Engineering study program learners at UNISLA in the academic year 2021/2022. Finally, researchers suggested to English teachers should get students interested in reading books by providing facilities and motivation to students. If the student has a high reading habit, the student will write easily in English.

ANALYSIS OF TEACHER’S SPEECH FUNCTION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING 英语教学中教师言语功能分析

This study deals with the utterances of an English teacher of MA Tarbiyatul Banin, Pati, Jawa Tengah. It is aimed to know the type of speech function used by the English teacher in the classroom and to find out how speech functions are applied by an English teacher in the classroom. Researchers apply a qualitative approach and design content analysis based on Ary et al (2010). The subject of this research was an English teacher in Tarbiyatul Banin, Pati, Jawa Tengah. The source of the data is the entity from whom the data was obtained, and the data is the expression used by the English teacher. The Researchers used audiovisual material for collecting data. The data of transcription are classified into six basic types of speech function; they are expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic. From the teacher who was observed, the researchers found a different total of utterances from each meeting. The total utterance is 154 utterances which are classified into five types of speech function. How the speech functions are applied by the English teacher in the classroom is when the teacher interacted with her students.

AN ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ WRITING MOTIVATION AT SMKN 1 BANGKINANG 北京师范大学第一外语系学生写作动机分析

Low writing motivation is a result of students' lack of interest in writing, their lack of writing vocabulary, and their inability to develop their ideas into written form. There are two types of student motivations: those that come from within the student, known as intrinsic motivation, and those that come from the outside, known as extrinsic motivation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the writing motivation of students at SMKN 1 Bangkinang Kota. The sample for this study consisted of 36 students in the tenth grade who were majoring in computer and network engineering, with 19 male and 17 female students making up the total. This study employs a quantitative design because it is a suitable method for gathering statistical information to address research questions. The findings demonstrated that SMKN 1 Bangkinang students in the tenth grade had better intrinsic motivation to study English, particularly writing. This is demonstrated by the average intrinsic motivation score (3.76) which is greater than the average extrinsic motivation score (3.31). In other words, they write because they want to be proficient writers.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF TEACHING WRITING THROUGH A GENRE-BASED APPROACH 基于GENRE的写作教学法的实施

This study reports on the effectiveness of teaching writing through a genre-based approach. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing the characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from classroom observation. The study involved students at a public high school in Bandung. The result shows that the teaching program of Genre Based Approach which includes Building knowledge of the field (BKOF), Modeling of the text (MOT), Joint construction of the text (JCOT), and Independent construction of the text (ICOT) helped the students to express the idea in writing. It also helped students to understand the language features and structures of the text. Based on the analysis, it is recommended that the teaching program can be applied in various text genres to improve the teaching of English and enhance the students’ writing ability.
本研究报告了通过基于体裁的方法进行写作教学的有效性。本研究采用了定性研究设计,包含了案例研究的特点。这些数据来自课堂观察。这项研究涉及万隆一所公立高中的学生。结果表明,基于体裁法的教学方案,包括构建领域知识(BKOF)、文本建模(MOT)、文本联合构建(JCOT)和文本独立构建(ICOT),有助于学生在写作中表达思想。它还帮助学生理解文本的语言特征和结构。在此基础上,建议将该教学程序应用于各种文体中,以改进英语教学,提高学生的写作能力。

This paper investigates the impact of online teaching and learning undertaken during pandemic of Covid-19 on students’ English skills. The skills include speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. This study used a qualitative method with a descriptive approach exploring what skills got impacted of 2 years online learning situation. Students' English skill, in particular, speaking and listening skills were negatively affected by the application of online learning that they had been done in prior. While, reading and writing skills had a positive impact on students' English skills as it used Geschool application therefore reading skills were more taught. This learning also made students do writing activities such as writing material from learning videos. The observation activities showed students were better able to participate in reading and writing lessons. The resdult of this studi was also indicated that in general English skills were badly affected which was showed by the average value of students was 50. Mpreover, all of those skills were impacted due to inadequate of facilities, motivation, and affectiveness of online teaching itself.
