Language textbooks used in public Jordanian schools are grammar oriented and give little weight to communicative competence. That’s why many language teachers opt for utilizing authentic materials reflecting the various aspects of the target culture that serve to engage students in life-like situations. Thus, this study aims at investigating the effect of using authentic materials on Jordanian EFL learners’ motivation and awareness of the English culture at (ISO) National Schools. An experimental group of tenth graders were taught by using authentic material like videos drawn from the target language culture and a variety of real life situations activities that expose them to the English culture. The new method addresses the speaking skill. A speaking pre-test and an attitude questionnaire were administered before the experiment to measure students’ oral communication and their motivation to integrate into the foreign culture. At the end of the experiment, a post-test was conducted and the results were compared to the control group who were taught by the traditional method. Significant differences were found between the two groups in favour of the experimental one thanks to the utilization of authentic material drawn from the target culture which enhances students’ oral communication skills. Thus, it is recommended that FL curricula should use this material to be skilfully implemented by classroom practitioners.

Implicit causality is the property of interpersonal verbs to relate two human or animate entities in such a way that one of the referents is assumed to have caused the action or attitude described by the verb. This assumption, which has been termed bias and which is seemingly rooted in the argument structure of verbs, affects remention and subsequent pronominalization. This paper surveys theoretical and psycholinguistic approaches to causality in language with a focus on implicit causal relations expressed inter-clausally by verbs. It also presents the preliminary results of an off-line sentence-continuation study in which we tested the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural consistency of the implicit causality bias patterns of interpersonal verbs in Romanian.

This small-scale study aims to trace the changes that have occurred in the Korean family institution in a time span of about one hundred years, more specifically, since the beginning of the 20th century, when Korea opened its borders to foreigners, until the present, as well as to identify the causes that have led to these changes. The theoretical framework I will employ is thematic analysis, defined by Berelson (1952, 18) as “a research technique for the objective, systematic, and quantitative description of the manifest content of communication”. The data subjected to analysis come from a number of novels authored by Korean and Korean-American writers, such as H. Lee (1997) Still Life with Rice, S. Park (2011) This Burns My Heart, and NJ. Cho (2018) Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, to mention just a few. The reason behind opting for literature as a source of information is that I consider it to be a cultural product of particular socio-cultural circumstances inextricably linked to history. The fragments from the novels have been analyzed in terms of some of the identified themes, such as the status roles created by marriage in the Korean culture, the involvement of men in the house chores and child-rearing, in-laws’ attitudes towards their daughters-in-law, and the chances of married women to keep their jobs, divorce, to mention just a few. The primary data is supplemented with information coming from the Korean society trend survey, conducted by Statistics Korea. The findings of the analysis will reveal a slow, though obvious change in the family institution, which could be attributed to factors such as the Western influence, the spread of Christianity in the peninsula, as well as the massive industrial, technological, and economic development of Korea.

Audiovisual translation (AVT), albeit originated back in the early 20th century, only started gaining in popularity in the past decades, and poses unique challenges compared to traditional translation. Not only does the translator have to face the limitation placed by the time and length constraints and the lip movement of the characters, but beside verbal elements, also non-verbal ones (sounds, music, images, etc.) define the target-language text. This characteristic of movies makes the task of translating realia, or culture-specific notions, rather hard. The translator can - and has to - choose from a wide range of translation methods that can be placed somewhere on a spectrum between two main trends: domestication or foreignisation, opting for either bringing the target language (TL) text closer to the target culture (TC), or preserve it to some extent in the source culture (SC). The goals of the present paper are twofold. On the one hand, it intends to support the validity of a taxonomy adjusted specifically for the translation of realia in AVT in a previous study, which allows the measure of domestication or foreignisation to be expressed in numbers. On the other hand, it provides a case study of a Hungarian film trilogy and its English subtitles with the aim of discovering a shift in trends towards foreignisation over time.

Neolocalism, a movement that shifted the focus from the global to the local sense of place is highly illustrated by local food industry, particularly craft beer industry. Researchers have identified neolocal discourse indicators in terms of branding, environmental sustainability and community engagement. In this paper I look at the neolocal discourse of three craft breweries from Romania, France and United States of America as mirrored in the most active and interactive communication environment, the social media. My aim is to investigate the extent to which national cultures impact the neolocal discourse. I place the research within a cross-cultural framework in light of the cultural dimensions framed by Hofstede, and I carry out semiotic analysis of images and texts posted on the Facebook pages of three craft breweries, Mustață de bere, Romania, Deck & Donohue, France, and Bell’s Brewery, United States of America.

The paper looks at size nouns of the type grămadă ‘heap / pile’ in Romanian and classifies them into two categories: size nouns with a comparative interpretation (Doetjes and Rooryck 2003) and size nouns with a quantifying interpretation (Brems 2007; 2010), the latter reading being sometimes contextually extended to a third type of interpretation, the negative evaluation interpretation (Brems 2010). The two major types of readings that size nouns may have are read off a head-complement syntactic structure, typical for pseudopartitive constructions, which size nouns+de+N constitute a subcategory of (Tănase-Dogaru 2017). The comparative interpretation arises as a reflex of the semi-lexicality of the size noun, while the quantifying interpretation is a reflex of the size noun having lost its original lexical meaning, and therefore serving a functional role.

This paper presents and describes an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course designed for second year forestry students using the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Starting with a theoretical overview of what CLIL stands for, the discussion continues with a presentation of the ESP course aimed at the efficient acquisition of the target language and of the content knowledge represented by specialized terminology. Examples of activities that engage the four language skills, i.e. reading, listening, speaking, and writing, are also provided before the concluding remarks, which reveal some advantages and limitations of applying the CLIL strategy in teaching ESP.

This study explores how sectarian language prevalent on Arabic media shapes common Arab people's perceptions of sects such as Sunni, Shiites, and others. A sample of Arabic sectarian expressions was collected from social media, print media and TV channels. A sample of students and faculty was surveyed. Sectarian language was analysed according to the components of perception (perceiver, target, and situation), the factors that affect each, and the social amplification and attenuation risk framework. Sectarian language used by students, faculty and Arab media is characterized by contempt, hostility, hatred, and intolerance of the sect(s) they disapprove of as they constitute political and ideological threats. Many Sunnis are afraid of the Shiite tide and Shiite Crescent. Hezbollah, Houthis, and Muslim Brothers are considered “terrorists” and “militias”.

Weaver (2014a; 2014b), among other researchers, states that ethnicity is a common topic in humour research. Davies (1998) mentions that most ethnic minorities become the butt of ethnicity-centred jokes. In the Romanian context, most ethnicity-centred humorous discourses target the Hungarians and the Gypsies (Popescu 2011). Jokes are, usually, told from the perspective of the Romanians as a central group, while the butts (i.e., the minorities) represent the peripheral one. In the case of Gypsy jokes, the peripheral group (i.e., the Gypsies) is named in various manners. The paper illustrates the ethnonyms and other means of calling this group that were found in the corpus, when presenting the portray of the Gypsy in humorous discourses. When the relationship existing between two ethnic categories is interpreted in the humorous discourse, I use the label of “interethnic jokes”. Interethnic jokes mirror intercultural relationships existing among ethnic groups which live together in Transylvania (the region where the corpus was collected). The perspective and the presence of the joke-teller (as the representative of the central group – i.e., Romanian/Transylvanian) is marked in the discourse by linguistic tools. This research shows that the presence of the central group may be explicitly stated via ethnonyms or may be implied through lexical or grammatical means. Lexically, the use of lexemes referring to (1) occupations/professions, (2) a person in general, or (3) proper names are the most frequent representations. Grammatically, the use of pronouns and verbs (1st and 2nd person, singular or plural) are widely used tools.

Jokes are, usually, told from the perspective of the Romanians as a central group, while the butts (i.e., the minorities) represent the peripheral one. In the case of Gypsy jokes, the peripheral group (i.e., the Gypsies) is named in various manners. The paper illustrates the ethnonyms and other means of calling this group that were found in the corpus, when presenting the portray of the Gypsy in humorous discourses. When the relationship existing between two ethnic categories is interpreted in the humorous discourse, I use the label of “interethnic jokes”. Interethnic jokes mirror intercultural relationships existing among ethnic groups which live together in Transylvania (the region where the corpus was collected). The perspective and the presence of the joke-teller (as the representative of the central group – i.e., Romanian/Transylvanian) is marked in the discourse by linguistic tools. This research shows that the presence of the central group may be explicitly stated via ethnonyms or may be implied through lexical or grammatical means. Lexically, the use of lexemes referring to (1) occupations/professions, (2) a person in general, or (3) proper names are the most frequent representations. This article postulates that teaching English had gone a long way before it was acknowledged that teaching grammar or teaching vocabulary could not be equated to teaching English. This realisation has changed teachers’ approach to teaching and learners’ awareness of the language’s ramified structure. By integrative approach it is understood the concurring of all teaching actions which address simultaneously language components and skills to the end of developing a full control of the language in learners. Faced with shortage of time, teachers avoid dealing with writing conventions, writing tasks or listening ones, to mention just a few of the time-consuming activities, in order to gain time for other skills which seem to prevail. Integrating in one’s teaching the pronunciation and writing conventions, the skills, vocabulary and grammar would offer a more integrative perspective of the learners on what they need or want to learn. By scrupulously relating the teaching items to other elements in the language, the progress would be faster, and the language would be better understood and learnt. At the same time, the article aims at establishing connections both within language and across domains of knowledge where English, or any other foreign language, plays the role of a means facilitating learning.
