Innovation Resistance of Political Websites and Blogs among Internet Users in Singapore 新加坡网民对政治网站与博客创新的抗拒

Abstract The Internet has become an influential platform to disseminate diverse political perspectives and promote democracy. With the prevalent use of the Internet, Singapore is a unique context to examine if its people resist online political information in a socio-political situation where politics is considered a sensitive domain and content regulation is imposed on mainstream media. The study integrates the concept of innovation resistance and the ideas derived from the Technology Acceptance Model to explore the reasons why Singaporeans resist political websites and blogs. After a focus group discussion, a web survey by Nielsen of 607 respondents using a sampling frame to ensure representativeness of Singapore's Internet users found that more than 40 per cent had never visited even one political website or blog. The data analysis reveals five main factors that cause the innovation resistance: perceived usefulness/image barrier, realization, perceived ease of use, peer influence and habitual conflict. Apart from perceived ease of use, the rest are found to affect users’ intentions regarding future adoption.

Effectiveness of the Easing of Monetary Policy in the Japanese Economy, incorporating Energy Prices 日本经济中货币政策宽松的有效性,包括能源价格

Abstract Japan has reached the limits of conventional macroeconomic policies. In order to overcome deflation and achieve sustainable economic growth, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) recently set an inflation target of 2 per cent and implemented an aggressive monetary policy so this target could be achieved as soon as possible. Although prices started to rise after the BOJ implemented monetary easing, this may have been for other reasons, such as higher energy prices as a result of the depreciated Japanese yen. This paper shows that quantitative easing may not be able to stimulate the Japanese economy. Aggregate demand, which includes private investment, did not increase significantly in Japan with lower interest rates. Private investment displays this unconventional behaviour because of the uncertainty about the future and because Japan's population is ageing. The paper concludes that the remedy for Japan's economic policy is not to be found in its monetary policy.

An Experimental Comparison of Commission Patterns in the Resale Housing Market in China 中国二手房市场佣金模式的实验比较

Abstract Using economical experiments, this study comparatively examines the effects of fixed-percentage commission pattern and flat-fee pattern on the brokers' behaviour and the brokerage results. To study the trading process of resale housing and the characters of broker services in the actual housing market, two groups of experiments were designed and implemented in lab. The findings conclude that compared with the flat-fee pattern, the broker's efforts are less, the service duration is shorter and the effectiveness of brokerage is worse when the fixed-percentage commission pattern is used. Considering the conclusions and the prevalent fixed-percentage commission pattern in the real market, this study suggests the application of flat-fee pattern should be encouraged and supported. The study enriches the research methods in the field of real estate and expands the application scope of experimental economic tools.

Abstract This paper develops a model in which the ability to raise tax revenue is of crucial importance to the state. Most poor countries rely upon the shifting of resources from hard- to easy-to-tax sectors and the policies utilized have generally been characterized as import substitution industrialization. A shift to outward-oriented growth depends on a process by which a larger proportion of the economy becomes formalized. Broad-based agricultural growth is a mechanism by which this will occur allowing for tax reform and a shift in economic policy. Taiwan and the Philippines are examples of success and failure.

Property Prices and Housing Affordability in China: A Regional Comparison 中国房地产价格与住房负担能力:区域比较

Abstract This study explores two issues related to China's property market dynamics. First, it examines how regional property price disparity is caused by space and capital market differentials, based on the Four-Quadrant Framework. With the panel data fixed effect model of 35 major cities from 2002 to 2012, it integrates regional factors, or the economic and demographic conditions in Quadrant I, into the Four-Quadrant framework. The empirical results suggest that in the coastal cities the capital market plays a bigger role in determining housing price while in the inner cities, the space market plays a bigger role. Second, the housing affordability indicator is modified by considering the impacts of household disposable income and urban population density on households' ability to purchase a home, which is in line with the first issue, to integrate economic and demographic conditions into investigating housing price dynamics. Comparing regional disparity, the eastern cities have higher housing affordability conditions than the central and western cities. The main reason is that the eastern cities have attracted human capital inflow from the central and western regions, resulting in a clustering effect for the coastal regions and a hollowing-out effect for the inland regions. The analysis has implications for investors and the government.

Diffusion of Catching-up Industrialization Strategies: The Dynamics of East Asia's Policy Learning Process 追赶型工业化战略的扩散:东亚政策学习过程的动态

Abstract This paper provides an overview of catch-up industrialization strategies in East Asia over the past few decades, articulating a theoretical-conceptual change from Akamatsu's Flying Geese Model to a leapfrogging and path-creating catching-up model. Within this intellectual context, this study explores the economic, political and institutional conditions for effective implementation of catch-up strategies (management of state-created learning rents) in South Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia. It proposes a new analytical grid that summarizes the current research on China's catch-up industrialization, explicitly acknowledging China's arguably unique multi-pronged mixed-mode model. The strategic models discussed in this paper may provide policy lessons for other developing economies in Asia aspiring to follow the path of technology upgrading.

China's Religious Freedom Movement Today 今日中国宗教自由运动

Abstract Christianity in China has undergone significant changes in its development in the last three decades and more. It has become the source of a new spiritual force in Chinese society, offering support to China's social development and its movement for liberty and human rights. Christianity has affected China in an important way in the cultural globalization process, and China's democratization process is a part of the cultural globalization process too. Family churches are causing serious changes in China's state–society relationship. This article attempts to consider the impact of Christianity's development on the values and thinking of the Chinese people, and their associated effects on church–state relations.

Abstract The article assesses the response of Tehran stock prices to exogenous monetary policy shocks, using a vector error correction model for the 1998Q1–2013Q2 period. Monetary policy is transmitted to stock market price through three routes: money by itself, exchange rate and inflation. Our result in this paper points to the fact that stock prices increase persistently in response to an exogenous easing monetary policy. Variance deposition results show that, after ten periods, the forecast error variance of more than 53 per cent of the Tehran Stock Exchange Price Index (TEPIX) can be explained by the exogenous shocks to the US dollar–Iranian rial exchange rate, while this ratio for exogenous shocks to the Iranian real gross domestic product was only 17 per cent. The article argues that such evidence can be accounted for by an endogenous response of the stock prices to the monetary policy shocks.

Promoting a Policy Initiative for Nation Branding: The Case of South Korea 推动国家品牌化政策:以韩国为例

Abstract How to raise the brand value of Korean products has been seriously considered in recent years by the government as well as commercial firms, and this question has brought a momentum to deal with policy matters on nation branding in Korea. Consequently, the Lee Myung-bak administration (2008–13) took drastic action by establishing the Presidential Council on Nation Branding (PCNB) in 2009 to deal with nation branding. This policy initiative on nation branding was conducted by the Lee administration from February 2008 to February 2013. This paper first reviews and discusses the policy framework for nation branding and the key activities on nation branding, followed by a discussion of achievements and limitations of Korea's nation branding. The nation branding issue has not been discussed much in the Korean or Asian public policy and public management communities in the past, and this article might provide a useful and timely reference for promoting such discussion.
