It discusses characteristic lexical phenomenashaping reality in the so-called German colonies with the employment of language. The paper is of an empirical nature and belongs in the domain of press studies.

The aim of the present article is to offer some reflections on the possibilities of developing intercultural competence in the context of glottodidactics by employing some elements constituting the language of football and sport. It is demonstrated that such elements as football-related lexems, anthroponyms of Italian football players, Italian football and fascism, cultural scripts, and many others can be used to shape students’ awareness as regards Italian culture, society, lifestyle, and customs. Consequently, one facilitates the enculturation process and the achievement of intercultural competence.

The present article discusses the latest novel by Natalka Babina, Бодай Будка [Bodai Budka, 2019] – the first Ukrainian-language novel written and published in Belarus. The writer continues her analysis concerning the problem of identity of Belarusians (touched upon earlier in the novel Town of Fish [2007]) and at the same time fights against the stereotype of a Belarusian as a “soul slave”. This time, Babin’s attention is focused on language as the decisive factor in the process of personality self identification. Therefore, the problems of the multilingualism of Belarusians (with special regard to the Ukrainian language), culturalmemory, and the (essentially hostile) hegemony of the Russian language are brought to the fore.

This paper, involving a textlinguistic-codicological analysis, attempts to identify specific features of the Russian administrative language in the entries of the parish register from Busko-Zdrój in the 19th century. The aim of the investigation is to answer the question as to whether the examined annotations can be regarded as a pattern of the registration in a parish register and so as a text type. The author focuses on the structure and characteristics of different entries. The research area defined in such a manner is based on the outlining of structure andthe function of the parish registers and their notes.

This paper attempts to interpret and evaluate Ukrainian translations of Józef Łobodowski’s poetry. Already in the 1930s, he was known to the Ukrainian reader primarily as a translator of Ukrainian poetry. His original work was also particularly appreciated by the Ukrainian émigré, mainly due to its pro-Ukrainian character. One of the precursors of the translations of Łobodowski’s poetry in the Ukraine was Sviatoslav Hordynsky. In the early 1950s, he translated, inter alia, the following works: Praise of Ukraine, Horse of Ataman Łobody and October Elegy. Hordyński was also a critic of Łobodowski’s works. His critical studies: Łobodowski’s poetry and its Ukrainian motifs and Józef Łobodowski and his poetry were published in Ukrainian periodicals. These essays discuss problems concerning Polish and Ukrainian poetry from the perspective of a contemporary observer, expert, and critic of Łobodowski’s work.

Backderivation is an example of a non-affixative word-forming process in which an affix is removed to create a semantically corresponding verb (Bauer, Lieber, Plague 2013: 280). This common phenomenon in English mostly occurs in the area of lexis borrowed from classical languages. The author focuses on directionality as a diachronic problem, and productivity of the process in a synchronic perspective. In order to trace the phenomenon of directionality, material from the source languages is collected chronologically. As for the phenomenon of productivity, quantitative analysis bases on attestations in text corpora and dictionaries. The author examines occurrences of this mechanism and its influence on the creation of similar forms in scientific and specialist language.
