The development of a profession is a dynamic process. According to sociological theories a profession is only established if three processes have taken place: 1) differentiation, 2) legitimation, 3) institutionalisation. With respect to the veterinary profession these processes have taken place and have given the veterinarian hiss present status (Koolmees 1992, Offringa 1983). Differentiation and specialisation within the veterinary profession are ongoing processes and in modern western society the equine veterinary practitioner is trying to define his own position within the total scope of veterinary medicine. In this paper the development from the ancient trade of “paardenmeester” (horse master) in the seventeenth century to the profession of equine veterinary practitioner today is described. In addition, the changing role of the horse and the related development of the market for equine veterinary services in the Netherlands are evaluated.

Beginning with literary statements about the harmony of horse and rider on one side and about the denaturing of the horse under the saddle on the other side, utilization and exploitation are explicated as biological ways of the interaction of different species in the nature. Such interactions are not restricted to methods which support the survival of individuals and species. The natural processes include hypertelic ones, it means processes, which are not dictated by certain purposes of surviving, especially while playing organisms are developing themselves hypertelic. The relationship between the human being and the animal in general and between the human being and the horse corresponds to the modalities of interspecific interactions described here. Furthermore, the human being is able to develop moral considerations against his actions and to act more or less in orientation on ethical principles. Moral aspects accentuate the perception of domestication and utilization as interventions in the live and the biotope of horses. This interventions are connected with physical and psychic stress for the horses. Veterinarians treat this stress, when it causes damages, but fear, suffering and pain are often neglected by veterinarians. The extent of stress grows, when horses are forced to perform under the saddle without regards to their genetically founded dispositions. It is reduced when the dispositions are regarded and when the learning processes is connected with the inclination of the horse, to develop himself playing in a situation without special needs and without stress. In that case, the interaction with the human being stimulates especially a horse, which is living under the restricted conditions of domestication. In the ideal case, this interaction provokes reactions, which the horse experiences. In the ideal case, the aim of the instruction exceeds the obedience of the horse to the rider; it means, the training realizes a way of cooperation between horse and rider. Such an intention and such a realization correspond to a riding, which human beings do in order to extend, to increase and to intensify their lives. It does not mean a riding, which is orientated towards military utilization of the horse or towards other practical purposes.

Lameness that appears after hot-shoeing is an issue the farrier is often blamed for. The aim of this study was to investigate the thickness of the sole at which it is possible to measure a change in temperature within the hoof capsule. In addition it was aimed to measure what change in temperature causes damage to the corium of the sole. The front limbs of 20 horses, aged between 2 and 17 years old and of differing breed and size, were cut off at the carpal joint immediately after euthanasia. The experiment involved a simulation of routine conditions during hot-shoeing such as fitting the shoe on the hoof by branding. Branding was continued until a significant change in temperature was observed. The temperature described as “critical” in histological studies so far (51 degrees C with a branding time of 3 minutes) was achieved with a with a sole diameter of x - < 5.4 mm (s = ± 1, 5 mm). Damage to the tissue (extravasation, change in structure such as deformation of the cells and their nuclei) was found during histological examination of these samples which were taken from the sole with a diameter of 4 mm or less. The k- parameter of the horn analysed by the flash-method was 0,2 W / K*m, which means Horn has a very poor thermal conductivity. The well-known, highly effective thermo-isolating characteristic of the horn capsule was confirmed. Only when a sole has a thickness of x - < 5.4 irreversible thermal damage can occur when performing an excessively hot and long-lasting branding. In this way the results can help to answer questions in the area of forensic medicine. Therefore it is of great importance to perform adequate x-rays (perpendicular course of beam; labelling of the sole) in order to document the (actual) thickness of the sole after branding and the following occurrence of lameness. By measuring the thickness of the sole it can be told whether there is a possibility that damages on the corium may have been caused by hot-shoeing, at all, and thereby also tell the probability of this to occur.
