Aim

This study aimed to explore and describe the cohesion challenges that the multicultural nursing team of a cardiac centre in a designated hospital in Saudi Arabia experienced.

Background

The World Health Organization predicts a huge global shortage of nurses by 2030. Healthcare services will have to recruit nurses from other countries. Internationally recruited nurses’ poor understanding of their colleagues’ and patients’ cultural backgrounds may lead to cohesive challenges in teams to the detriment of quality patient care.

Methods

A descriptive qualitative design was applied. Face-to-face interviews were done with 15 participants (five nurse managers and ten nurses), their ages ranging between 30 and 50 years. They were from different countries and cultural backgrounds. One open-ended question was used ‘What cohesion challenges does the multicultural nursing team of the cardiac centre experience, and what support should they get from management to overcome these challenges?’ A thematic data analysis was done.

Results

Cohesion challenges were experienced due to poor communication, the exclusion of members in decision making, a lack of meaningful team-building events and limited introduction of newly appointed members. The diversity of the team led to the alienation of some members, and the internationally recruited nurses felt that they were expected to conform to the expectations of the Saudi members.

Conclusions

The participants did not appreciate the benefits of multicultural teams and only focussed on the challenges that they experienced to function as a cohesive unit. The participants wanted to be respected, acknowledged and valued as team members.

Implications for nursing and health policy

Managers should invest in cultural competence training, the enhancement of communication practices and the encouragement of trust among members to ultimately improve team cohesion.

Aim

To investigate how humor use by nurse supervisors, reduced time pressure, and years in the profession jointly reduce nurse turnover intention.

Background

Nurses encounter various workplace stressors that cause negative outcomes. Humor use among nurse supervisors is known to help form cohesive relationships and reduce job burnout. However, it is unclear how this humor use by nurse supervisors can help reduce nurse turnover intention.

Methods

This research employed a cross-sectional design and collected a sample representative of a medical center. Our research was conducted in a Taiwanese medical center from October to November 2023. Proportionate random sampling was used to survey and obtain valid responses from 534 registered nurses. Regression analyses were performed to test the model. The STROBE statement was chosen as the EQUATOR checklist.

Results

Humor use by nurse supervisors was negatively related to nurses’ turnover intention, and such humor use mitigated the relationship between years in the profession and reduced turnover intention among nurses.

Conclusion

Our study took the lead in examining when and how cautious humor use by nurse supervisors can help reduce nurse turnover intention. Such humor use helps reduce turnover intention among novice nurses.

Implications for Nursing Policy

Nursing policymakers could consider enhancing nurse supervisors’ skills in using humor to help maintain a competent nursing workforce.

Aim

The aim of the study is to explore the experience and perspectives of healthcare personnel deployed from the hospitals and military into long-term care (LTC) in Ontario during the pandemic.

Background

Personnel from acute care hospitals, community care, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and the Canadian Red Cross were deployed in support of LTC homes across Ontario.

Introduction

This article reports on the study of personnel deployed into LTC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the experiences and lessons learned will be useful to improve planning and responses to future pandemics and disasters.

Methods

A descriptive, exploratory research study design with a demographic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews was used. Data analysis used a combination of open and process coding to identify thematic categories. The COREQ checklist was used for reporting on the study.

Findings

Interviews were conducted with 30 participants who described common challenges of navigating the unknown, defining one's role, and establishing order. Lessons included the importance of adaptability, flexibility, and pragmatism and emphasized the role of leadership.

Discussion

The findings highlight challenges that personnel from civilian and military backgrounds experience when responding to disaster, and underscore the importance of communication, effective leadership, and cohesive teams. These findings are consistent with existing literature, contribute to the understanding of how personnel in disasters address challenges, and inform how to better prepare and train personnel for future disasters.

Implications for Nursing and Health Policy

These findings can be used to inform disaster theory and practice, including disaster competencies such as the International Council of Nurses Disaster Nursing Competencies, and provide a framework to improve disaster planning and responder training.

<div> <section> <h3> Aim</h3> <p>This study examines the associations between fixed and rotating shifts on nurses’ sleep quality and compassion fatigue, aiming to address a critical gap in understanding how work schedules are associated with nurses’ well-being and patient care.</p> </section> <section> <h3> Background</h3> <p>Nurses play a vital role in healthcare; however, irregular work schedules are often associated with compromised well-being. Rotating shifts are associated with poor sleep quality and emotional exhaustion, impairing their ability to provide compassionate care.</p> </section> <section> <h3> Design and methods</h3> <p>A cross-sectional design was used to recruit 288 nurses from public hospitals through simple random sampling, with equal numbers in fixed and rotating shift groups (<i>n</i> = 144 each). Sleep quality and compassion fatigue were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), respectively, both of which are valid and reliable measures. Independent samples <i>t</i> tests and Mann–Whitney <i>U</i> tests were performed to analyze group differences. The reporting method used was STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) for observational studies.</p> </section> <section> <h3> Results</h3> <p>Nurses working rotating shifts reported significantly poorer sleep quality (<i>p</i> < 0.001) and higher levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress, components of compassion fatigue, compared with those on fixed shifts (<i>p</i> < 0.001). Compassion satisfaction was significantly lower among rotating shift nurses (<i>p</i> < 0.001). Effect sizes were large for all comparisons, highlighting the substantial associations of rotating shifts on these outcomes.</p> </section> <section> <h3> Conclusion</h3> <p>This study highlights the significant differences associated with rotating shifts on nurses’ sleep and emotional well-being. Aim

To assess the level of cultural competence among European nursing students after their first clinical experience.

Design

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in 18 countries and 66 higher institutions with a sample of 2932 nursing students.

Methods

The Cultural Competence Assessment (CCA) tool was used in its original version (English) and its validated versions in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, and Lithuanian. The CCA includes 25 items, Likert-type normalized in a 0–100-point scale with two dimensions: Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity (CAS) subscale and Cultural Competence Behavior (CCB) subscale. An online anonymized questionnaire was used to collect the variables. The influence of background and acquired factors in CCA was analyzed with multivariate regression models.

Results

The mean level of cultural competence of the European undergraduate nursing students after their first supervised internships is at a good level. Significant associations were found between cultural competence level and language of the questionnaire, gender, religious community, current year of education, leisure stays abroad, and international experiences at home, but having friends from other countries or cultures was the most important factor to explain CCA. The explained variance of CCA by these factors was low.

Conclusions

The international perspective of cultural competence among undergraduate nursing students at the starting point of their clinical experience provided by this study serves as an important preview of where European nursing education currently stands as a baseline scenario for designing, providing, and assessing adequate educational strategies for being a culturally competent nurse at the point of graduation.

Implications for the profession and patient care

The study highlights specific factors that contribute to higher levels of cultural competence. These insights can be used to further improve nursing education by providing more opportunities for students to engage with diverse cultures, resulting in enhanced cultural competence, which can lead to better patient care and higher satisfaction in diverse environ

To analyze primary care nurses’ experiences of integrating and using digital health in their daily practice.

Background

The integration of digital health in primary care, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has transformed nursing practices with a view to provide better support and services to patients.

Introduction

The World Health Organization defines “digital health” as the use of electronic technologies to improve health. Its 2020–2025 strategy seeks to integrate these technologies into health systems to facilitate communication between professionals, patients, and authorities. Tools such as telehealth, electronic records, artificial intelligence, and big data are transforming the role of nurses, who must become familiar with them for their performance.

Methods

Qualitative studies on digital health in primary care nursing were reviewed following the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) guidelines and using the Joanna Briggs Institute for Qualitative Research (JBI-QARI) criteria.

Results

Eleven articles were analyzed using thematic coding according to Thomas and Harden's approach, identifying three main themes: adaptation to digital health, nurses’ perspective on digital health, and nurse–patient digital interaction.

Discussion

The integration of digital health has required nurses to adapt quickly. They have expressed both benefits and challenges, highlighting the importance of adequate training, personalization in the use of digital tools, information security, and optimization of technological infrastructure.

Conclusion and implications for nursing and/or health policy

It is essential to assess the current competencies of nurses in digital health in order to meet their needs.

Aim

This study explores the association between diplomatic leadership, organizational health, and workplace happiness among nurses.

Background

The internal work environment of organizations plays a crucial role in addressing challenges induced by external environmental factors, requiring adaptation strategies to address global issues to cope with their widespread impact. The relationship between the internal work environment and the ability of organizations to manage external pressures has been underexplored.

Methods

This descriptive correlational study involved 323 nurses. Data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the diplomatic leadership scale, the happiness at work scale, and the organizational health scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 26.0 (IBM Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).

Results

There was a statistically significant relationship between organizational health and diplomatic leadership and nurse happiness at work and also between diplomatic leadership and happiness at work. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant indirect effect of organizational health on nurse happiness at work when the diplomatic leadership acts as a mediator variable. Also, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between diplomatic leadership and nurse happiness and organizational health at work.

Conclusion and implications for nursing and/or health policy

The research findings offer valuable insights for hospital administrators and nursing managers, highlighting the importance of utilizing diplomatic strategies to address workplace challenges and contribute to policy development at both national and international levels. These results emphasize the need for policymakers to sustain focus on strategic initiatives that promote diplomatic leadership as a forward-thinking administrative approach. To support this direction, healthcare organizations should adopt and implement dedicated training programs that enhance diplomatic leadership competencies. These programs should aim to continuously develop the leadership skills of nursing managers while aligning their capabilities with the evolving demands of the healthcare environment.
