Background

Patients with dementia face challenges in participating in their care, making decisions, and expressing needs, increasing the risk of missed nursing care (MNC).

Aim

To explore the MNC experiences of nurses providing care to patients with dementia.

Method

This phenomenological study involved 13 clinic nurses with at least one year of experience in neurology clinics and care for patients with dementia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in May–June 2024. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with an inductive approach. The ethical committee approval and institutional permission were obtained to conduct this study. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research was followed in reporting this study.

Findings

Study findings were classified into five subthemes under the two main themes: (1) structuring the care process: (i) establishing authentic relationships with patients with dementia and caregivers and (ii) preparation of caregivers as “wild card”; and (2) MNC process: (i) key contributors of MNC, (ii) occurrence of MNC, and (iii) suggestions for prevention of MNC. The nurses identified that they constructed a trust-based relationship between themselves and patients with dementia and their caregivers by providing increased attention, demonstrating patience, and allocating sufficient time for care. Most participants reported facing numerous challenges that led to MNC in the care of patients with dementia, such as feelings of inadequacy, communication gaps, lack of cooperation between caregivers and nurses, and lack of teamwork. Moreover, all nurses reported experiencing MNC in the care of patients with dementia, including leaving the care to caregivers or physicians, ignoring the autonomy of patients with dementia, delaying care, and not maintaining authentic communication.

Conclusion

The challenges nurses encounter in caring for patients with dementia have led them to MNCs.Nurses strive to build trust-based relationships with both patients and caregivers, yet systemic barriers, such as insufficient teamwork, communication challenges, and feelings of professional inadequacy—often compromise care delivery. These findings underscore the urgent need to address the structural and interpersonal dynamics that perpetuate MNC in dementia care settings.

Introduction

Workplace bullying, a widespread phenomenon, significantly impacts interpersonal relationships, mental health, professional performance, and organizational efficiency in healthcare. Defined as repeated behaviors intended to intimidate or degrade, bullying thrives in hierarchical, high-stress environments like hospitals, where nurses face disproportionate risk. Such behaviors harm morale, increase turnover, and jeopardize patient safety through errors and negligence. Understanding its prevalence and contributors is essential for fostering healthier work environments and improving healthcare outcomes.

Methods

This cross-sectional descriptive study followed the STROBE guidelines. A Slovak adaptation of the Negative Act Questionnaire-Revised, developed as part of this study, was administered to nurses, resulting in a final sample of 244 participants. Spearman's correlation and Welch's ANOVA tests analyzed variable relationships using jamovi software.

Results

Nearly one-third of nurses were victims of bullying (32.2%, >45 points), with another third experiencing occasional bullying (32.2%, 33–44 points). The median score per responder was 38 (IQR: 23), with person-related bullying scoring highest (median 19, IQR: 13). Younger nurses with less experience reported higher mobbing levels (p < 0.001). Nurses in frontline roles (operating rooms, intensive care units, and surgical units) experienced significantly more bullying than those in outpatient clinics (p = 0.01). Doctoral degree holders had the lowest mobbing scores (p < 0.001), while nurses in frontline roles reported higher mobbing levels than Ward/Charge Nurses (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

The study highlights a significant correlation between nurses’ experiences of mobbing and factors such as age, experience, education, position, and workplace type. The high incidence of bullying among Slovak nurses requires immediate attention from healthcare leaders.

Implications

To address workplace bullying, healthcare institutions should implement zero-tolerance policies, provide ongoing education in professional conduct, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution and integrate these topics into nursing curricula. Leadership should model respectful behavior, while mentorship frameworks and resilience training support novice nurses. Finally, accessible reporting systems must ensure a

Aims and objectives

This study aims to examine the mediating role of fear of future violence in the relationship between exposure to violent events at work and burnout among physicians and nurses.

Background

Workplace violence is an escalating concern within healthcare institutions in Türkiye. Increasing exposure to violent events among healthcare professionals contributes to heightened fear of future violence, which may in turn exacerbate burnout.

Methods

A cross-sectional research design was utilized, collecting data via an online survey distributed to 387 physicians and nurses. The hypothesized model was analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques implemented in AMOS and SmartPLS software.

Results

The analysis revealed that exposure to workplace violence significantly elevated the depersonalization and emotional exhaustion dimensions of burnout. Conversely, it was associated with a paradoxical decrease in the personal accomplishment dimension. Notably, no statistically significant relationship was found between exposure to violence and fear of future violence. These findings underscore the complex interplay between various burnout dimensions and the impact of workplace violence on physicians and nurses.

Discussion and conclusion

Workplace violence emerges as a significant contributor to burnout among physicians and nurses, affecting emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment in multifaceted ways. However, the anticipated relationship between exposure to violence and fear of future violence was not supported by the data, indicating a need for further research in this area.

Implications for nursing policy

The findings of this study indicate that health policies in Türkiye should prioritize strategies aimed at preventing and managing violence against physicians and nurses. Measures such as violence management training, strengthening organizational support systems, and implementing clear protocols for reporting and responding to violent incidents can help mitigate burnout among physicians and nurses.

Aim

To pose an argument for health systems to improve responses to armed conflict by investing in developing the advanced practice nursing workforce.

Background

Armed conflict catalyzes infectious disease, noncommunicable disease, and physical and psychological trauma. Health systems in countries at war face challenges in meeting the health service needs for affected populations while providing sufficient care for the rest of the public. Integrating advanced practice nurses into the workforce is one solution to address the demand for health services during war. Importantly, policies facilitating a quick, efficacious advanced practice nurse response during war must be in place before armed conflict arises.

Sources of Evidence

A critical narrative review of peer-reviewed articles was conducted. The review focused on the benefits of advanced practice nurses during crises and systemic policy setbacks preventing advanced practice nurse workforce development. A case study from the Israel–Hamas War is presented.

Discussion

Holistic, patient-centered care positions advanced practice nurses to care for the physical and psychological needs of the population arising from war. Evidence from other public health crises, such as the COVID-19 and H1N1 pandemics, reinforces this notion. However, common policy setbacks, such as an ill-defined scope of practice and a lack of interprofessional awareness of the role, prevent advanced practice nurses from providing care when conflict arises. Israel's policy efforts before and during the Israel–Hamas War exemplify advanced practice nursing workforce policy development that facilitated an effective response to crisis.

Conclusion

Addressing expanded advanced practice nurse authorities before conflict starts will facilitate an improved health system response.

Implications for Health Policy

Research examining the effectiveness of advanced practice nursing care quality during armed conflict will facilitate national-level investment in advanced practice nursing workforce development.

Aims

This study explores how workplace violence influences community nurses’ job burnout, specifically identifying the chain-mediating role of perceived stress and job satisfaction in this relationship.

Background

Existing research highlights the negative impacts of workplace violence on nurses’ physical health, mental well-being, and job attitudes. However, community nurses remain understudied, particularly regarding the sequential mediating roles of perceived stress and job satisfaction between workplace violence and burnout.

Methods

This cross-sectional study followed STROBE guidelines and recruited 814 community nurses from 75 communities in southwest China. Data were collected via Questionnaire Star using five validated instruments to assess job burnout, job satisfaction, workplace violence exposure, and perceived stress. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlations were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, while structural equation modeling tested the chain-mediating effects of perceived stress and job satisfaction in the workplace violence–burnout relationship among community nurses.

Results

Workplace violence was positively correlated with job burnout. Perceived stress and job satisfaction partially mediated this relationship and functioned as sequential mediators in the violence-burnout pathway.

Conclusion

Workplace violence exacerbates community nurses’ job burnout through a chain-mediating pathway involving elevated perceived stress and subsequent diminished job satisfaction.

Implications for nursing and nursing policy

Managers should prioritize workplace violence against community nurses by enhancing violence prevention training to improve staff's risk assessment and emergency response skills. Additionally, standardized violence reporting systems, trauma assessment protocols, workplace environment improvements, and psychological support mechanisms should be established to create a comprehensive prevention-response framework.
