Assessment of the breeding system in the Algerian narrow coastal endemism Anacyclus linearilobus (Anthemideae, Asteraceae) 阿尔及利亚窄岸特有植物线状圆环虫(菊总科,菊科)繁殖系统评价

The breeding system of Anacyclus linearilobus, an annual and endemic species restricted to dune ecosystems of the Algerian coast were assessed through the effect of self-fertilization and intra- and inter-population artificial crosses on the probability of producing viable seeds in 20 individuals from two populations in a common garden. The breeding system was determined for each individual by the self-incompatibility index (ISI). These results were compared with those published for other species of the genus, A. clavatus, A. homogamos and A. valentinus. Results of experimental crosses showed that there was high variation in the female reproductive success between individuals of A. linearilobus, like that found in its sister species, A. valentinus. Unlike the other species in the genus that are self-incompatible, A. linearilobus showed a mixed mating system, with a majority of self-incompatible individuals, others partially self-incompatible and some self-compatible. We argue that this strategy may be related to reproductive assurance in this endemic, annual species whose effective population size has been reduced probably due to individual mating incompatibilities.

Characterization of Mediterranean endemics in the Egyptian flora 埃及植物区系中地中海特有植物的特征

The Mediterranean Basin is the world’s second richest hotspot, and one of the most important locations on the planet for endemic taxa. However, there is no available up-to-date list of Mediterranean endemics. Available data are frequently insufficient or outdated. Therefore, this study aimed at delimiting the Mediterranean floristic region in Egypt, screening its Mediterranean endemics, and determining their habitats, life forms, flowering periods, dispersal types and phyto-geographical distribution. From a list of 275 Mediterranean endemic taxa in Egypt compiled from literature, this study reduced it to 57 taxa (including species, subspecies and varieties; 20.7%) belonging to 46 genera and 22 families. Fifteen major habitats harbored Mediterranean endemics in Egypt, with coastal dunes (17 taxa = 29.8%) and non-saline depressions (16 taxa = 28.1%) being the most represented. Moreover, the Mareotis (west) subsector was the richest (46 taxa = 80.7%). The largest number of taxa was recorded in North African sub-region (52 taxa = 91.2%), followed by Eastern (levant) sub-region (36 taxa = 63.2%). Therophytes were the most recorded life form, while ballochory was the most represented dispersal type. In conclusion, it is crucial to shed the light on Mediterranean endemics and provide an up-to-date documented database to help future management plan that support their conservation and sustainable use.

A new species of Kalanchoe (Crassulaceae), K. dineshii Syam Radh & Nampy, is described and illustrated. The new species occurs in the Mathikettan Shola National Park in southern Western Ghats, Kerala, India, and it is only known from the Idukki district. It is morphologically most similar to K. bhidei, but distinguished from the latter by its small stature (30-40 cm high), obovate to obtrullate sessile leaves adnate to stem in the basal ¼th, and widely ovate calyx lobes. Information is also given on the distribution, habitat, phenology, and conservation status of the new taxon.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Tamarix for the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands is provided, updating the Flora iberica account published in 1993. A new dichotomous key for the Iberian and Balearic species is also included. The presence of certain number of species previously cited for the study area (T. arborea, T. canariensis, T. dalmatica, T. mannifera, T. mascatensis, T. meyeri, T. octandra, T. rosea, and T. tetragyna) is discarded or considered doubtful. Seven species are accepted: three of them are native (T. africana, T. boveana, and T. gallica) and one species (T. parviflora) was probably introduced over a century ago. Three more species (T. aphylla, T. chinensis, and T. ramosissima) have been introduced more recently. Two of them, Tamarix chinensis and T. ramosissima, are grouped as T. gr. ramosissima due to their high morphological resemblance. A new hybrid between T. boveana and T. gallica is also described under the name of Tamarix × verae.

Polygala idukkiana (Polygalaceae) is described as a new species from the Idukki district of Kerala in the southern Western Ghats. Detailed description along with colour photographs, distribution map, and key to the identification of Polygala species occurring in Kerala are provided. The new species is compared with the morphologically allied P. sibirica, P. rosmarinifolia, and P. chinensis. The conservation status of the new species is assessed provisionally as Data Deficient (DD) according to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Invasion risks and social interest of non-native woody plants in urban parks of mainland Spain 西班牙大陆城市公园中非本土木本植物的入侵风险和社会利益

Urban parks and gardens are one of the most important pathways for the deliberate introduction of non-native plant species, some of which cause environmental and socioeconomic impacts. We conducted a risk assessment on 388 non-native woody plant species from 46 urban parks of mainland Spain to classify them in lists based on their invasion status, being invasive elsewhere, climate matching with the area of origin, and potential to cause negative impacts. Only Ficus benjamina has no potential to invade (Green list). Four species are invasive and regulated (Priority list); 47 invasive or potentially invasive species can cause more impact types than the median value (Attention list), while 12 can cause less impacts than the median (Watch list). There is no park without any invasive or potentially invasive species. The most common potential impacts could be competition with native species (80% species) and the physical modification of the habitats (71%). We also identified 31 species with potential to cause human health impacts. Some species could cause several impact types. The most correlated potential impacts are among competition, toxicity, and alteration of natural succession and habitat structure. The most frequently planted invasive and potentially invasive species are the ones with the largest standard trending value from Google Trends, and therefore the ones with more societal interest.

Summer phytoplankton of Serranía de Cuenca (central Spain) 夏季浮游植物Serranía de Cuenca(西班牙中部)

Since the number of studies on the phytoplankton of Serranía de Cuenca (central Spain) has been scarce, this is an attempt to increase our knowledge by describing the physico-chemistry, phytoplankton flora and biomass of seven stagnant environments in summer. They are located in a karstic depopulated area where abandonment of crops and livestock has resulted in decreasing human impacts. As a result, flagellate-rich taxa indicating clean waters are dominant, showing some rare species as well. Biomass is low and seemingly limited by phosphorus. These environments are worth of wider and detailed studies on its algal flora, which will probably result in the description of novel phytoplankton taxa and new records of rare species.

Reconnecting the Cinchona (Rubiaceae) collections of the “Real Expedición Botánica al Virreinato del Perú” (1777-1816) 重新连接辛乔纳(茜草科)收藏的“秘鲁总督府皇家植物探险队”(1777-1816年)

During the “Real Expedición Botánica al Virreinato del Perú”, 1777-1816, Hipólito Ruiz López (1754-1816), José Antonio Pavón Jiménez (1754-1840), Juan José Tafalla Navascués (1755-1811) and Juan Agustín Manzanilla (fl. 1793-1816) collected economically important specimens of anti-malarial cinchona bark (Cinchona spp.). In the 230 years since, these specimens have been dispersed across institutions in Spain, Britain, Germany and Italy. Two major sub-collections of these are found at the Real Jardín Botánico, Madrid, Spain (n = 243), and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK (n = 188). The Kew collection arrived in Britain through Pavón and other Spanish botanists selling part of the collections. This study traces the history, trajectory and relationship of the collections between the two institutes.
