The article concerns “private” Orzeszkowa, who in the rich correspondence with publishers reveals her views on: writer’s sovereignty, possible concessions to publishers and “upgrading” the works included in new, collective, editions. The letters also contain valuable information on the origins of novel and negotiations conducted by Orzeszkowa in relations to publishing her subsequent works. Among the surviving letters addressed in years 1864–1910 to, among others, Jozef Sikorski, Gebethner and Wolff, Franciszek Salezy Lewental, Erazm Piltz, Stanislaw Posner, the ones selected for analysis were the ones addressed to: Jozef Sikorski and Franciszek Salomon Lewental (with the focus being largely on the correspondence addressed to Sikorski). The correspondence is the most accurate manifestation of Orzeszkowa’s personality and her maturing, it reveals the background of conflicts over the work’s final form, and amazes with the young author’s uncompromising attitude and courage.

The article concerns posthumous collective editions of Norwid’s “writings”, which also contains letters. The editions, which also served the purpose of “discovering” the poet, reveal the problematic status (between “writings” and “compositions”) of epistolaries, provided to the public nearly at the same time and according to the same principles as literary works. What is more, the manuscript nature of a large part of Norwid’s legacy and almost simultaneous release of both stricte literary texts and private writings, determined the manner of functioning of the latter in scholarly reception. Their genre specificity was usually recognized by treating letter fragments as a direct expression of the poet’s views, a recording of his thoughts. However, when interest was shown in letters as a separate domain of Norwid’s activity, raising at the same time, among others, the issue of the structure of epistolar subject, their editorial form significantly influenced the results of analysis, as the letters were read as a whole, a coherent, consequently structured unity. Reading letters as letters – utterances which are situation – or event-related – would first require a destruction of their book-like form.

The article is a critical edition of two epithalamniums by Jan Karol Dachnowski, a Baroque minorum gentium poet, so far unpublished as a whole. Epos nuptiale was included in Talamodia , published in 1620, whereas Hymen weselny ( Wedding anthem ) could be found in Filantropia from 1631. Both texts show strong affiliations with the Antiquity. The former is based on Claudian’s Epithalamium dictum Palladio et Celerine , while the latter was inspired by Fragment 44 , attributed to Sappho. The edition includes a critical apparatus and explanations.

The aim of the paper is to present the most important findings of the editor made during the preparation of publication of four initial books of lyrics published in Poezyje Franciszka Dionizego Kniaźnina reką wlasną pisane ( Franiszek Dionizy Kniaźnin’s Poetries, Written in His Own Hand ), or the so-called Pulawy Manuscript (Rekopis Pulawski). The findings in question concern: the messages and archetypes of the poems from Kniaźnin’s manuscript, published earlier in “Zabawy Przyjemne i Pozyteczne” (“Pleasurable and Useful Entertainments”), ephemera and three collections authored by the poet, namely Erotyki ( Erotic Poems ) from 1779, Wiersze ( Poems ) from 1783 and Poezje. Edycja zupelna ( Poetries. Complete Edition ) from 1787; dating of the works and determining the reasons behind their creation; the presence of translations in the autograph and the author’s notes that relate to them; the choice of addressees; and finally, references to authentic places and events connected with the everyday life of the Czartoryski family or those important for all the citizens of the Republic of Poland, which Kniaźnin included in his text.
