The Liberating Power of Harmony and Order: on the Notions of Liberty and ... This paper discusses the thought of Zhang Shenfu, one of the central figures behind the propagation of modern science and dialectical materialism in Republican China (1911 – 1949). In particular, it focuses on the notions of liberty, mathematical logic and humaneness ( ren 仁 ) in his writings in the period between the year of the May Fourth events (1919) and the late 1930s. The main aim of the analysis is to cast some light on the common conceptual and methodological features which underlay these interpretations, in order to reveal the essentially Chinese cultural “perception” or traditional worldview that served Zhang as the prism through which he viewed and understood the nature of and the relationships between all these “novel” concepts from the West. Consequently, an important aim of this paper will be to highlight a specific fragment of the intellectual mechanism that conditioned the so-called Chinese intellectual modernisation of the Republican period.

When Jamāl c Abdannāṣir died, the Egyptian regime lost its solid stabilization element. His personal charisma had been the regime’s greatest asset. His unexpected death on 28 September 1970 ushered a period of uncertainty, as the new era was marked by a creeping retreat from the fundamental pillars of Egypt’s domestic and foreign policy at the time. In order to understand the nature of the goals, means and style of the policy of his successor Anwar as-Sādāt, it is necessary to focus on the latter’s perception of international and regional politics, including for example, the moves of the superpowers towards détente, the military balance between Israel and the Arab countries; and competition within the Arab world. Anwar as-Sādāt created his own ways of manipulating the constraints on Egypt and using his capabilities in developing foreign policy at the local, regional and global levels.

The topical processes of modern identity-making within Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) on the one hand, and China on the other, are fundamentally results of different forms of cultural and economic transformation, conflict and harmonious social adjustment. The aim of the present article is to show the need to appreciate the role of culture not only as a background to, but also as a constitutive part of, economic dynamics. Thus, it assumes that any comparative analysis of the rise of transitional societies must deal with questions connected to respective value systems, i.e. issues of moral education, political authority, social solidarity, and religious beliefs. It is not coincidental that the rapid recent development of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) owes much to such crucial traditional virtues as social hierarchy, self-discipline, social harmony, strong families and a respect for education. In this context, the present article examines the revival of the Confucian tradition in China. According to previous research results, traditional East European values were in many aspects closer to such virtues then traditional Western values that have been mainly focused upon the idea of individual autonomy. Hence, this study examines the hypothesis that the Central and Eastern European area could function as a cultural and axiological bridge between China and Europe.

The paper contains 63 common Berber zoonyms denoting domesticated and wild animals and their cognates in various branches of the Afrasian (Afro-Asiatic, Afroasiatic, Semito–Hamitic) macro–family including reconstructed proto-forms for each branch and the macro-family. The research is based on the classical comparative and historical method relying on the established sound correspondences between the languages of every taxon.

Dhaka alias Jahangirnagar became the capital of Mughal Subah-i-Bangalah in the early 17th century CE. As the principal seat of the region and the centre of trade and commerce, it attracted the opportunity seekers, travellers, traders, government officials from different parts of the then known world and became a true cosmopolitan city. During the Mughal period the city was full of beautiful palaces, forts, richly decorated houses, caravanserais, mosques, shops, streets, bridges, etc. But owing to the ravages of time and the unplanned development of modern Dhaka, nothing is left except a few mosques, tombs, the ruins of a fort, and a few local names associated with the Mughals. It is now difficult to locate Jahangirnagar, the Mughal capital of Subah-i-Bangalah, based on archaeological evidence. Previous researchers (mostly historians, and/or architects) attempted to locate the capital in the older of part of present-day Dhaka through analysing mostly historical narratives, and occasionally material evidence. Owing to a lack of training in archaeological data analysis, early assumptions and narratives show an absence of archaeological interpretation of material evidence. However, the present research does not seek to challenge the accepted narrative of Dhaka as the capital of Mughal Bengal; rather it is an attempt to comprehend the centrality of Dhaka by using archaeological evidence and by analysing some parameters developed from modified versions of Christaller’s Central Place Theory presented by Kimmig and Gringmuth- Dallmer.

Israel’s military victory over the Arabs in June 1967 provoked a widespread reaction and a search for a way out throughout the Arab world and, in the case of Syria, led to the overthrow of the ruling regime. In the autumn of 1970 Ḥāfiẓ al-Asad seized power, and his regime represented the arrival of new elites from rural backgrounds to replace the traditional urban politicians and representatives of business circles. It was an authoritarian regime whose power base was the army and the Ba c th Party. The sole ruler wielded absolute power and became the object of a personality cult. The regime adopted socialist-type economic policies and advocated egalitarian reforms.

The aim of this paper is to examine language data with regard to potential differences between male and female registers. Corpus linguistics is used as the basic methodological approach (mostly quantitative) to the topic and the Hanku corpus, more particularly the subcorpus Litchi, are used as the primary source of language data. The data are presented in the form of tables together with a brief analysis. The results indicate a considerable variation between male vs. female registers in some areas – lexicon, part-of-speech proportion etc. However in other areas (e.g. prosody) there exists no deviation at all. These indicators of variation will be subject of further, more detailed research.

In the 10th to 11th centuries, the process of formation of the Oghuz tribes was under way in Central Asia. It was accompanied by the disintegration of kinship ties and the emergence of statehood. A new type of ethnic community was being formed, based on territorial and economic ties. The formation of the Oghuz Yabgu state with its political centre in the lower reaches of the Syr Darya 1 played an important role in this process. The Oghuz state, like many other nomadic empires, was not monolithic and its borders were not permanent or strictly defined. As a result of extended social conflict, the Syr Darian Yabgu state collapsed and did not withstand the attack of 1 A river in the territory of modern Kazakhstan. This article is devoted to an eminent Polish-Tatar Orientalist, writer and activist of the first part of the 20th century, Ali Ismail Woronowicz. From 1937 he was an imam of the Muslim community of the city of Warsaw, and from 1938 he looked after Muslims in the Polish army. From 1933, he was a member of the editorial staff of the scholarly journal Rocznik Tatarski [Tatar Yearbook]. In 1941 he was accused of espionage and arrested by the NKVD. The subsequent fate of Woronowicz is unknown; he was probably killed by the Soviet army. Woronowicz published in Polish and foreign scholarly and popular periodicals. He focused mainly on the study of the Tatar region in the Polish-Lithuanian territories. In 1936, in Cairo, he published a brochure in Arabic Al-Islām fī Būlūnyā [Islam in Poland], which was probably the first publication about Poland in Arabic in the Middle East. While still studying in Cairo, he began working on the monograph “The Life of the Prophet Muhammad and the Dawn of Islam”.
