The conservation and preservation of museum collections requires a detailed understanding of their constituent materials which are often natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic polymers. The use of a wide variety of instrumental techniques can give an extraordinary amount of quality information, by delivering complementary data regarding composition and structure. This study was triggered by the Oporto Military Museum (Museu Militar do Porto) conservators who observed that a set of plastic toy soldiers dating back to the middle of the 20th century from the museum exhibition started to present severe and accelerated degradation process. With this is mind, the authors envisaged a methodology for the characterisation of these soldier toys that compromised elemental, structural and morphologic analysis, to allow the identification of polymers, their additives, and the degradation products. The methodology comprised stereoscopic microscopy and VP-SEM-EDS to recognize the micromorphology, ATR-FTIR to identify the polymer, 1H and 13C NMR to identify their additives, and micro-XRD to identify degradation products with a crystal structure. With this complementary analytical approach the composition of the toy soldiers was identified as being made of cellulose acetate plastic with triphenyl phosphate and dimethyl phthalate as major additives, and crystallyne efflorescence of triphenyl phosphate were identified as a degradation product. This methodology shows to be very adequate for a detailed characterization of plastic artefacts in museum environments.

The objects and their functions are configured depending on how they will be used, assuming they can be used as archives’ tools, material culture inputs, generators of memories or simply perform the function for which they were designed. Thus, it becomes necessary to discuss the functions of museum objects and culture. To this end, the relations created between the items exhibited and the exhibition design in the process of memory elaborating will be identified, considering that both are inserted in an institutional space configured as Theater of Memory. The argument is supported by concepts from Hooper-Greenhill, Meneses and Ramos. As a case study, the exhibition Renato Russo, from the Museu da Imagem e do Som of São Paulo, was elected, including the description of the chosen objects and the dynamics created between the exhibition space, the objects and the visitor.

Varnishes consist basically of a resin and solvent. Aromatic solvents are widely used for varnish formulations, but they present considerable toxicity which requires their replacement. Two binary solvent systems with an oxygenated solvent (ethyl acetate or isoamyl acetate) and cyclohexane were studied as possible substitutes for xylene in varnish formulations. The toxicity of solvents was analyzed using data from the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The solubility of Damar, Paraloid B72, Regalrez 1094, and Laropal K80 resins in these solvents was evaluated by Hansen and Teas Solubility Parameters, sigma profiles, and experimental method. Vapor pressure measurements were obtained from solvents and viscosity and gloss measurements from varnish formulations. The results indicated the potential of binary solvent systems as substitutes for xylene, but require further studies on their effects on pictorial materials on which they are applied.

A esfera do conhecimento engloba gradações complexas.

This article is the result of an investigation about the Bullring of Campo Pequeno, which was inaugurated in 1892, being today one of the most emblematic buildings of the city of Lisbon. Although the history of this building has already been approached by other authors, this is a theme that worth is to be developed from the point of view of the history of art and the history of the nineteenth century, both from the point of view of the analysis of the revivalist architecture of the building, either from the point of view of its integration into a Lisbon area that was then being planned, the Avenidas Novas. In addition, the relevance of this building should be emphasized, in particular since it has few contemporary parallels, both at national and international level; and also, because its construction with brick and iron was an element of modernity that must be underlined. Furthermore, this study is a contribution to the field of Olisipography, which is specialised study in Lisbon's history.

Earth as a building material has been gaining a renewed interest due to current environmental and eco-efficiency concerns. Indeed, earth is an ecological and economically efficient material that can also contribute to increase indoor comfort. However, earth mortars have a limitation: their susceptibility to water. In order to implement a more comprehensive use in indoor and outdoor environments, where there may be contact with water, the inclusion of stabilizing agents has been studied. This article presents a critical literature review of the effect of the most common stabilizers used in earth mortars, specifically: vegetable fibres; binders such as calcium sulfates, air limes and limes with hydraulic properties, cement; and oils. It appears that some of these stabilizers seem to improve the earth mortars resistance to liquid water. However, in most cases, this improvement occurs at the expense of other important properties, which are also discussed.

The Museu Imperial has an important historical collection from the Portuguese Royal Family in Brazil. The throne represents the imperial power and is considered one of the most important objects in the museum; however, the piece has been facing for decades a gradual deterioration, mainly in its fabrics. With the growing motivation to preserve this property, conservation and restoration processes were conducted in all parts of the throne. As a part of this treatment, a microbiological survey was conducted in selected parts of the object and the surrounding environment where it was placed. This biodeterioration study, control and detection of microbial species indicated a very pertinent answer in relation to the place it was exposed, and the restoration process was performed in order to solve the most pronounced damages aiming to restore the original characteristics of the artefact. The study indicated a high diversity of fungi and bacteria. It was observed a marked decrease, before and after restoration, being observed the recurrence of the genera Absidia, Cladosporium and Epicoccum. This reduction was not so pronounced for bacteria, being also observed the recurrence of some bacterial groups after restoration (Microbacterium, Staphylococcus and Kocuria). In the atmosphere new fungal species were found after restoration, indicating a natural recontamination of the exhibition area.

After Edson Motta’s graduation from the Fogg Conservation Center, his experience contributed to the practice of conservation in Brazil through the introduction of new materials and the technique of wax-resin lining. However, this technique has drawbacks when applied in a country of tropical climate and few resources. It is important, when considering the use of this approach, to be mindful of the conservator’s historical role, which can reveal why this technique was, very likely, the best choice for the conservation of the vast patrimony of canvas paintings in Brazil.

The objective of this work is to present a new practical approach to digital photogrammetry in artistic diagnosis and virtual restoration. The study has been applied to an anatomical model of polychrome wax, dated from the 18th century. In the photographic record, the combination of light sources (visible and ultraviolet) has been used to obtain 3D models that serve as documentation tools to accurately map the state of conservation and to project the virtual restoration. The stages of the photogrammetric process are described along with the lighting strategy and colour management used to solve the problem of virtual registration on surfaces of objects with very bright finishes. The results obtained are promising, because they make it possible to obtain a 3D model with optimal record of the morphology of the sculpture to project virtual solutions within the decision-making model.
