This article examines the politics of reconciliation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. It focuses in particular on the case of Talangsari killings in Indonesia and makes a regional comparison with Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Myanmar. The Indonesian experience illustrates some of the complex issues that arise when attempts are made to dealing with past abuses, especially in the context of the constraints and possibilities faced by new democracies. In a comparative perspective what is being experienced in Indonesia is not new in the sense that, as argued by scholars elsewhere, new democracies also have to face this kind of situation.1 This article argues that dealing with the past human rights abuses brings about real power struggles among the contending actors and power holders and it reflects the power structures within and outside the country. It is suggested that there is no “universal” model for dealing with past human rights abuses but some form of accountability which brings together the elements of prosecution, reconciliation and forgiveness could be considered.

This article examines Seyyed Hossein Nasr's teaching on Sufism and its relevance to modern society. The fact is that the paradigm and lifestyle of modern humans are materialism-oriented. Therefore, they experience a spiritual emptiness that causes anxiety. This study applies the literature approach by collecting various related sources. This study found that Seyyed Hossein Nasr's idea of neo-Sufism can be an alternative paradigm for modern people to free themselves from the threat of materialism and hedonism. The Divine spirit of humans will form spiritual power in the human soul to keep the connectivity between the servant and God. Nasr's teaching on Sufism puts forward the concept of balance and moderation between the life in this world and hereafter, between shari'ah and haqeqat, and between individual and social life.

This paper analyzes the movie Ayat tentang Cinta, which still has not received much attention from the researchers, namely from the aspect of the existence of the Qur'anic verses and traditions in it. Two core questions want to be the focus of the study, first, how does the movie Ayat tentang Cinta position the Qur'an [and hadith] as a representation of an interpretation of the Qur'an and hadith? Secondly, how is the existence of the values of the Qur'an [and hadith] in the film being one of the concourses of righteousness? This paper is a qualitative study, using content analysis and a semiotic approach. The results of this study show that in the movie Ayat tentang Cinta, it appears how the scenes displayed by the actors can show the relevant point of a movie as an interpretation of the Qur'an and Hadith, for example, the cafeteria in marriage is allegedly based on the QS. Al-Nur: 26. Secondly, in the movie Ayat tentang Cinta, many of the values of the Qur'an and Hadith in its diverse form, such as how each central figure in the movie describes the things that are relevant to the values of the Qur'an and hadith, at least through the distinctive scenes. All of this, as well as being one of the interesting facts about the construction efforts of righteousness by actors into the minds of audiences. Of course, in typical terminology.

This paper critically examines the important roles of the presence of Sufism institutions for the urban middle class. Writing taken from research on the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in Surabaya and Bojonegoro presents constructive thinking as well as the creative practices of the murshid, Gus Kahar and Gus Mustakim. Both managed to "reconcile" between modernity and spirituality. The concept of positive sufism and positive zuhud based on Gus Kahar and Gud Mustakim make a significant contribution as well as a reference for urban middle-class people who are often confused and uncertain in combining Islam and modernity. In accordance with the mission of Islam from the beginning of its birth, Islam (sufism) taught in the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad was felt to liberate its jama’ah from diseases suffered by urban communities such as the reason for being analyzed, disorientated, distorted, and so on

This study intends to examine the question of the controversy of naskh on verses of tolerance with verses of war. These issues are (1) what is meant by verses of tolerance and verses of war in the Qur'an, and (2) what is the ulama's view of the dualism of the two types of verses? For this reason, this study uses the literature review method with hermeneutical-critical and comparative analysis. This study produces several things. Firstly, there are verses of tolerance in the Qur'an, which amount to 114 according to some scholars, or 140 verses according to other scholars, and verses of war against idolaters which number not less than 22 verses. Secondly, theoretically the scholars have discussed the assumption of dualism (ta’āruḍ) between verses of tolerance and verses of war in the study of the Qur'an. Islamic intellectuals such as Ibn Sallāmah, al-Shāmi, and Abdullah Bin Baz acknowledge the existence of ta'āruḍ, and therefore they also state that verses of tolerance have been replaced (mansūkhah) by verses of war as a way to resolve the conflict. Some other Islamic intellectuals such as Mustafa Zaid, Ahmad Ḥijāzi al-Saqā, and Yusuf Qardhāwi denied this assumption. On the basis of the study of siyāq al-kalām and munāsabah, in addition to the analysis of its historicity (asbāb al-nuzūl), these verses can be compromised, so that all the contexts are stated to apply. The views of the two types of scholars, hermeneutically, cannot be separated from the influence of the ideology surrounding each other's lives.

This article aims to carry out an exploration related to the epistemological setting of Mullā Ṣadrā's interpretation. Apart from being known as the main Muslim philosopher as Ibn Sinā, Ṣadrā also describes his mystical-philosophical views in his collection of commentary treatises, Tafsīr al-Qurān al-Karīm. Through this article, the author describes a set of interpretive epistemologies used by Ṣadrā, which can be used as an epistemological offer to bridge several issues of Sufi interpretation (tafsīr al-ishārī), especially in the validity of its disclosure method. In addition to the method of interpretation, there are other unique things contained in this article, such as: mukāshafah as the main foundation of interpretation as it applies generally in the Sufi interpretation (tafsīr al-ishārī), sources of interpretation (maṣādir al-tafsīr) and the style of explanation of the commentary (uslūb al-tafsīr) that Ṣadrā uses. Furthermore, to complete this paper, the author also describes Ṣadrā's view of the ontology of the Quran as the basis of his interpretation epistemology.

In Indonesia context, the study of Quranic Exegesis has two groups of opposite interpretations: Interpretations that are too based on the outer meaning of the text and interpretations rely more on the inner meaning of the text. Generally speaking, a balanced and moderate interpretation is an interpretation that combines the two meanings. The moderate commentators are those who do not deny the meaning of one from another. The style of interpretation of Shaleh Darat seems to combine the two meanings. This research uses descriptive-analytic method by trying to find the pattern and embodiment of moderate Interpretations in his work, Fayḍ al-Raḥmān. From the study of his work, this study found: 1) Shaleh Darat has a tendency to moderate interpretation of the Qur’an with the characteristics of fairness, balance, and tolerance. 2) His moderate interpretations appear in some verses regarding sharia and mu'amalah fields.

Gender justice and gender equality are complex topics and drew the attention of many people. A number of Muslim jurists have studied it from various perspectives in order to understand and find a fair solution to the problem. However, most of them are rare to study it from the lens of maqāṣid al-Qur’ān, the purpose of al-Qur’an was revealed to the earth. Incorporating gender justice and gender equality in maqāṣid al-Qur’ān is considered urgent with the intent that people will really pay attention, watch, and put male and female proportionally. This paper focuses on analyzing Yūsuf al-Qarḍāwī's thought about gender equality and justice as part of maqāṣid al-Qur’ān. This article includes library research, whose datas are sourced from the literature. The results of this study revealed that men and women have equal rights in every aspect of life; education; economics, social, political, and law. They are also given equal rights in participating to be public leaders. Besides that, they have equal rights in selecting their belief (religion) based on their strong desire and their own belief and they have rights to get heritance as well as having rights to the goods they have. On the contrary, any kinds of discriminations, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and all forms of deviation inequality of gender bias, contradict and contrasted with maqāṣid al-Qur’ān.
