Today, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be considered mature and, therefore, ready to be applied in other areas where its technological, modeling and architectural results can be effective. Quality of Life (QoL) related research fields can take great advantage from the maturity of ICT. The Center for TeleInFrastruktur (CTIF) and, in particular, its Italian node, is addressing deep efforts in the use of ICT for improving the QoL, through an interdisciplinary research. In this paper we present the application of ICT on Biotechnology field; in particular the CTIF_Italy, Italian node of CTIF, is working, along with other international partners, on a stem cells research for the development of cardiac tissue, defining models to characterise cells interactions and networking related issues.

In this paper the performance of dual branch switch and stay (SSC) diversity receivers over correlated and non-identical Ricean fading channels is analyzed. For that purpose, a new model, based on linear transformation of correlated Ricean random variables into uncorrelated ones, is proposed. In that manner, it is enabled to apply standard procedure for performance analysis of uncorrelated signals. Probability density function (PDF), cumulative density function (CDF) and moment generating function (MGF) of the signal at the output of diversity combiner are derived. Furthermore, outage probability and bit error rate, assuming BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) mapping of the input data, of the considered dual diversity system are determined.

This paper presents the work in radioclimatological modeling that has been developed over the last two decades for Southern Africa. The work covers microwave and millimetric wave propagation in clear-air and under precipitation. The paper presents models for the effective earth radius factor (k-factor) for of the determination of diffraction fading over a link. In addition, it presents seasonal variation of the Geoclimatic factor, which is used for the estimation of multipath fading over a link. Under precipitation conditions, the paper covers the average year and worst-month rainfall rate for mainland South Africa and the neighbouring islands of Marion and Gough. Also covered are the rainfall integration time conversion parameters, rain attenuation prediction on terrestrial paths, rain attenuation using forward scattering, and, finally, the raindrop size distribution estimates.

Radio spectrum is limited resource, its efficient use is prime concern. Normally, spectrum is allocated for any services on 20 years or more. In coming days, spectrum would be needed for shorter duration instead of longer duration of 20 years due to fast changing scenario and advancement in technology. In such situation, auction of spectrum for longer duration will not ensure efficient use of spectrum. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for auction of spectrum for short duration and show that reserve price play significant role over the auction result.

Many wireless channels exhibit sparse multipath feature in practice. In this paper, we analyze the sparsity of sparse MIMO channel and the leakage effect with fixed Fourier basis in the spatial/angular domain. In order to enhance the sparsity of the MIMO angular channels we propose an optimized overcomplete Fourier basis dictionary, which is obtained by a sparsity criterion, to represent the signals with the best basis. By converting the compressed sensing from multiple measurement vectors to a single measurement vector, the reconstruction of the MIMO channel is simplified and makes better use of the sparsity of the MIMO angular channels. Simulations show that with the optimized basis dictionary the leakage effect is reduced and the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm can reconstruct the MIMO channel effectively with the optimized Fourier basis.

Base station coordination is envisioned as a key technology in future mobile networks. It reduces the interference between adjacent cells and promises enhancement of spectral efficiency. However, little is known about the penalties due to impairments. Channel errors may be caused by channel estimation, feedback delay as well as by synchronization errors among the base stations. Hence, the computation of the precoder relies on imprecise information and the orthogonality between the user data is disturbed. In this paper, we give an overview on potential impairment effects. We derive an accurate signal model capturing the effect of synchronization impairments depending on the feedback delay. The resulting interference levels must not be larger than the one obtained after cooperation of the base stations in the cluster being limited by interference of non-coordinated base stations surrounding the cluster. We introduce an equivalent mean square error for these impairment effects, propose a practical way to evaluate the corresponding performance degradation and discuss compensation mechanisms.

The PBL-course for engineering students at Aalborg University provides support for student-groups' project-work and collaborative learning when planning and conducting scientific problem-based project with societal relevance. The results of a survey among some of the groups indicate that the limited experience with the Aalborg PBL Model clearly affects groups' perception of importance of using different PBL-tools. Development of process-competencies depends upon facilitation of reflection and experimentation.

While the benefits of cooperative diversity have been well studied in the literature, cooperative MAC protocol design has also attracted much attention recently. In the single-relay Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (C-ARQ) protocol, the best relay node is selected in a distributed manner by relays using different backoff time before packet retransmission. However, this relay selection scheme does not work efficiently in a dense network scenario, due to possible high collision probability among different contending relays. In this paper, we propose an optimized relay selection scheme to maximize system energy efficiency by reducing collision probability. The energy efficiency performance by the proposed optimal relay selection scheme is verified by simulations.

OTA (Over-The-Air) system, which is one of the MIMO terminal evaluation methods, achieves real multipath fading environment around the measurement device, and it is currently being standardized. Fading emulator, one of MIMO-OTA measurement systems, can achieve the desired propagation environment around assessment area by radio waves radiated from a number of antennas placed on a circle around the terminal. There are a lot of advantages offered by the use of renewable energy in terms of minimal environmental impact compared to fossil fuels, lower costs and its great role for ensuring the sustainability of human life on planet Earth. Among all sources of renewable energy, solar energy is by far most abundant. One of the most interesting applications of this renewable source could be represented by its use for favoring the thermal dissociation of water and hence the production of hydrogen. Finally, this could be employed for example as green fuel for cars in place of fossil ones. The work focuses on possible technologies able to exploit solar energy for the dissociation of water and the production of hydrogen. The basic idea is to combine a support structure capable of achieving very high temperatures when heated by concentrated solar radiation to carry out the water decomposition via a two-step process using metal oxide redox systems. The whole process (water splitting and regeneration of the metal oxide) could be carried out in a single energy solar converter. In this scenario, the use of technologies well established and already applied to antenna subsystems design for aerospace missions would be useful in order to develop a system which is able to reach very high temperatures exploiting the solar source.
