This paper presents the results of our study on the statistical characterization of MPEG-2 VBR video stream and the modeling of such source. The frame trace, marginal distribution of the frame size and the high autocorrelation existing in the continuous frames are analyzed. An ARMA process is used to model MPEG-2 video source. The different frame types of MPEG-2 video are considered together by performing a normalization transformation during modeling. The performance of the model is examined and the results show that the model is good in fitting the histogram and preserving the property of autocorrelation. We also indicate that the proper order of the ARMA model depends on the frame pattern of the MPEG source.

The enormous growth of the World Wide Web has led to a vast amount of unsolicited information being transmitted to many users. Information filtering is a useful technique to combat such an undesired information overload. In this paper, we present a distributed environment for information classification, called D-SIFTER. D-SIFTER (distributed smart information filtering technology for electronic resources) consists of many networked filters communicating to achieve a collaborative classification of incoming documents. Our preliminary experiments show a 44% increase in the number of successful classifications in D-SIFTER as compared to the isolated environment called SIFTER (smart information filtering technology for electronic resources).

We present a convergence layer protocol enabling the multipoint communication service (MCS) protocol to run over the multipoint transport protocol. This protocol structure makes the MCS protocol execute on peer to peer transport protocol and multicast transport protocol at the same time. For doing this, the convergence layer determines whether the peer MCU is multicast capable during the connection phase. If the distant MCUs reject the request of the local MCU, the connection is not multicast capable. If the MCUs corresponds to the successful case, the MCUs will use multicast to the transfer channel data.

To enhance the performance of nonlinear interpolative vector quantization for wavelet transform image coding, we propose a directional vector classification scheme that results in an adaptive interpolative vector quantization method suitable for wavelet-based image compression. Vectors consisting of wavelet-transformed coefficients are classified into different categories according to their directional activity energy. An adaptive bit assignment algorithm effectively allocates the bit budget among different categories. Simulation results show that the new vector quantization method gives superior compression performance and also reduced computational complexity in codebook training and quantization compared to the conventional interpolative vector quantization technique. For standard test images, the PSNR improvement is about 1 dB at the compression ratio of 50.

We design and implement the internetworking system between the ATM network and PSTN, which provides telephone services between the clients of the ATM network and subscribers of the PSTN. The internetworking system consists of the PSTN I/F module, signaling processing module, voice sampling module, voice regeneration module, transmission module, and ATM I/F module. The PSTN I/F module and ATM I/F module are implemented by using the existing commercial hardware products. However, the other 4 modules are implemented for the WIN95 environments by software. The test environment was also implemented and it was found that the internetworking system operates without problems.

The average error probability of a cellular wide-band DS-CDMA system with DPSK modulation over Nakagami fading channels is analyzed. The results with varying parameters are applied to different fading environments. To simplify the evaluation of the interference out of the cell-of-interest, concentric circles are employed in place of the common hexagonal cellular model. It is shown that accounting for two layers of interfering cells is sufficient for the performance analysis of a wide-band system if the path loss exponent equals to 4.

An acquisition system for a hybrid frequency hopped direct sequence spectrum communication link is proposed and its performance in the presence of multitone jamming is analysed. Given a certain power, the multitone jammer can optimise its effectiveness by varying the number of jammed hop slots. It is shown that the number of jamming tones which results in the poorest acquisition performance increases with J/S. From the communicator's point of view, it is shown the number of hop slots which results in the best anti-jam capability against such multitone jamming depends on the maximum J/S the link is designed to withstand.

The implementation of a BTS (base station transceiver) for a wideband PCS (personal communication services) system using DS-CDMA (direct sequence-code division multiple access) technology is presented in this paper. It consists of three boards; receiver, transmitter, and RF controller. Some RF parameters are considered and simulated by the RF simulation S/W for commercial and customized components. The implemented transceiver of 5 MHz RF channel bandwidth satisfies the functional requirements of a transceiver such as dynamic range, sensitivity in the receiver and spurious emission suppression in the transmitter.

Order-reduction techniques have already been successfully applied to the detection of linear FM signals in white noise. In this paper, reflection coefficients of adaptive lattice filters are used, in a new aspect, to reduce the order of input polynomial phase FM signals. This concept is then used to detect chirp signals in white noise. To define an appropriate hypothesis problem for the transformed signals in the first adaptive reflection coefficient, its statistical behaviour is experimentally investigated. It is shown that for small confidence intervals, the relevant probability density function for the transformed signal can be assumed Gaussian.
