The aim of this article is to examine the relationships and influences of intellectual capital, creating shared value, and organizational agility on social entrepreneurial capacity and sustainable organizational performance. It also aims to provide guidelines for enhancing social entrepreneurial capabilities and fostering sustainability from these perspectives. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire with 400 community enterprises registered with the Department of Agricultural Extension in Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi provinces, targeting business executives. Data analysis included averages, skewness, kurtosis, and standard deviation, with structural equation modeling (SEM) performed using the AMOS program. The results highlight significant relationships between intellectual capital, creating shared value, and organizational agility in driving social entrepreneurial capabilities and long-term organizational success. Intellectual capital positively influences creating shared value, organizational agility, and social entrepreneurial capabilities. creating shared value further strengthens organizational agility and social entrepreneurial potential. Organizational agility, in turn, enhances social entrepreneurial capabilities and long-term performance. Additionally, social entrepreneurial capability positively impacts long-term organizational success. The policy recommendations emphasize fostering intellectual capital, promoting creating shared value, balancing agility, supporting social entrepreneurialism, integrating shared value into strategy, monitoring overall performance, encouraging continuous learning, and fostering collaboration within and across industries. The development of social entrepreneurial capabilities in communities depends on leveraging intellectual capital to drive creating shared value and organizational cohesion, ultimately supporting long-term sustainability.

Envy is a social emotion that arises from comparing ourselves to others, and it can significantly affect our flourishing in competitive environments such as universities. In Muslim societies, where cultural and religious values emphasize contentment and avoiding harmful emotions, envy's impact may differ. Understanding how harmless and harmful envy can affect students' flourishing is important, as this emotion can either motivate personal growth or hinder it. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how benign and malicious envy influence the flourishing of university students in Muslim society. A cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected from a sample of 401 Algerian university Muslim students (86.5% female, mean age 21.63 years) from the University of Chlef, with varied economic backgrounds and academic levels ranging from first-year undergraduates to doctoral students. The study utilized the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale and the Flourishing Scale. Multiple regression analysis revealed that benign envy was a significant positive predictor of flourishing, while malicious envy had a significant negative effect. The regression model indicated that only the academic year significantly impacted flourishing, while gender, age, and economic status did not significantly predict flourishing. In terms of benign and malicious envy, gender, age, family economic status, and academic year did not significantly impact either. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the complex impact of envy on people's flourishing, highlighting the different effects of benign and malicious envy. It suggests that fostering benign envy could help individuals thrive while reducing malicious envy, which is important for improving flourishing. The findings offer important insights for educators and policymakers aiming to support students in academic settings, especially in Muslim societies.

Spiritual well-being is a major determinant of health. However, evidence regarding the role of spiritual well-being in determining self-care among Muslim nursing students is lacking. This study was conducted to examine the role of spiritual well-being in determining self-care among Muslim nursing students in Jordan. A cross-sectional design was used to conduct this study in a sample of Jordanian Muslim nursing students. Data collection was performed using reliable, valid measures. Bivariate correlations between the dimensions of spiritual well-being and self-care were all statistically significant (r = .28 to .43, p < .001). According to the results of MANOVA and its follow-up analysis, Muslim nursing students who had moderate levels of spiritual, religious, and existential well-being demonstrated lower self-care mean scores compared to those with higher levels of spiritual, religious, and existential well-being. This study provided foundational evidence regarding the integral role of religious, existential, and spiritual well-being in shaping the self-care practices of Jordanian Muslim nursing students.

Home accidents are common among elderly people. This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the risk factors for accidents among elderly people in Thailand. Interviews were conducted with 247 elderly people recruited using convenience sampling. A questionnaire was used to collect data on demographics and home accidents. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify the factors related to home accidents. Most participants were female, were aged 65–69 years, and lived in single-story houses with their families. More than half reported having had home accidents, mostly slips. Gender was significantly associated with accidents (p < 0.05), while other factors including age, body mass index, and toilet type showed no significant associations. This study suggests that the risk of accidents depends on individual susceptibility and environmental factors such as slippery or unstable floors. The results can inform the design of homes for the elderly based on anthropometric data to incorporate features such as stable handrails, appropriate home and kitchen equipment, and tools. Additionally, interventions and home safety guidelines aimed at preventing home accidents.

Data breaches in the government sector are severe threats to cybersecurity and illegal acts that flagrantly violate security and privacy laws. It undermines public trust in government data management. Unlike breaches in other sectors, these incidents can have far-reaching consequences and the potential to cause significant damage to governance and national security. This field has experienced rapid growth in recent years, which means an increase in urgency to address this challenge. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the scientific landscape of government data breaches. It analysed 107 articles published from 2006 to 2023 from the Scopus database. The key findings highlighted trends in scientific production, the most cited articles, country contributions, co-occurrence networks, thematic evolution, and factorial analysis. Ransomware has become one of the biggest challenges in cybersecurity, especially for governments. The use of increasingly sophisticated zero-day attack techniques makes it difficult for law enforcement to track the digital footprints of perpetrators. The regulations on data protection remain inadequate and require improvement. The existing legal framework is not strong enough to reduce data breaches in cyberspace. Therefore, to deal with cyber threats, such as ransomware, cyber risk management is essential and using cloud computing raises new challenges and opportunities in cybersecurity. These findings contribute to future research and practice as guidance for policymakers, system developers, researchers, and practitioners in improving cybersecurity protocols and shaping government regulations and policies.

The influence of educational reforms on teachers is scarcely investigated. This study, therefore, explored the implications of the secondary education expansion policy in Tanzania for the teaching profession. A qualitative case study approach was adopted to gain a better understanding of the phenomena under exploration. Focus group discussions, one-to-one interviews, and document analysis were used for data collection. It was revealed that strategies geared towards enhancing the success of the secondary education development policy, especially those related to producing high-quality teachers to teach the newly built schools were not fully implemented. Challenges related to the admission process for, and the delivery of, pre-service programmes adversely affected the social positioning of teachers, and consequently, their identity construction was severely compromised. Reshaping the pre-service programmes in ways that enhance teachers’ sense of themselves as professionals would make teaching an appealing and promising job, and ironically the expansion policy would be effectively accomplished.

Not all informal payments are bad: Instrumental variable investigation of the effect of sand-the-wheels, cultural norm, and grease-the-wheels types of payments on life satisfaction

In this study, we investigate the effect of making different types of informal payments in public services on life satisfaction. We theorize that the effect of different informal payments on life satisfaction is not universally negative. Specifically, we hypothesize that the direction of the effect depends on the specific type of motivation for making such payments. As such, we articulate three hypotheses on the effect of specific motivations for making informal payments on life satisfaction. Hypothesis 1 postulates that “sand-the-wheels” payments reduce life satisfaction. Hypothesis 2 posits that “cultural norm” payments improve life satisfaction. Hypothesis 3 proposes that “grease-the-wheels” payments improve life satisfaction. We tested these hypotheses on a large sample of 29 diverse countries in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union using the quasi-experimental two-stage IV technique and one-stage classic OLS regression. Hypotheses 1 and 2 are confirmed by both IV and OLS. Conversely, Hypothesis 3 cannot be confirmed by either IV or OLS. We conclude that focusing on informal payments in general, rather than on evaluating specific motivations for making them masks the true outcomes of making such payments. Hence, while designing, implementing, and studying anti-corruption policies, decision-makers and researchers should distinguish between different motivations for making informal payments.

A social environment conducive to learning is important for students to achieve educational goals. Well-functioning leadership in the classroom creates conditions for teaching, learning, and development. The aim of this study was to investigate how staff perceive and receive a positive behavior support (PBS) program two years after its implementation and how it affects the social environment conducive to learning. The researcher conducted and analyzed three group interviews, one pair interview and one individual interview with teachers and principals (N = 14) through reflexive thematic analysis. The results showed that the staff perceived no visible result concerning the students' behavior after the implementation of PBS. However, the staff experienced positive results in leadership skills, teamwork, their ability to create a culture that favors a social environment conducive to learning, and how to handle students. The findings also showed that the staff had a positive view of PBS; the program gave them concrete strategies that made it easier to create expectations. Some staff were unable to participate, and additional time and resources were required. The study's results help us understand the impact of PBS in Sweden, which has not been researched thoroughly to date.

The findings also showed that the staff had a positive view of PBS; the program gave them concrete strategies that made it easier to create expectations. Some staff were unable to participate, and additional time and resources were required. The study's results help us understand the impact of PBS in Sweden, which has not been researched thoroughly to date.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101225"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142747592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted higher education, forcing universities to rapidly adopt technological and digital solutions to maintain their pedagogical roles creating challenges in sustaining adequate contact between academics and students. This study evaluates the capacity of Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) to deliver quality distance education (DE) during the spring 2020 lockdown, focusing on the impact of educational shifts on students, teachers, and administrative staff to develop scalable and shareable practices for future crises. A tripartite methodology included a comparative analysis of UCA's DE systems before and during the lockdown, quantitative surveys of students, faculty, and administrative staff, and synchronous remote interviews with key stakeholders. SPSS-based statistical analysis revealed significant challenges, such as insufficient stakeholder socialization, increased stress, insecurity, and higher dropout rates. The reliance on PDF resources as a cost-saving strategy highlighted the need for continuous faculty training in active learning and improved access to digital platforms. The findings emphasize the urgent need to address these challenges to enhance DE effectiveness at UCA and ensure the future quality of education during crises.

From Sarkivasi (nomadic) to Gaonvasi (villager): The impact of sedentarisation on Rajasthan's stigmatised Nat community 从Sarkivasi(游牧民族)到Gaonvasi(村民):定居化对拉贾斯坦邦耻辱的纳特社区的影响

The Nat community in Rajasthan is among the most stigmatised groups. Traditionally known as a nomadic entertainment group, they are currently involved in various economic activities, including sex work, which carries significant societal stigma. This paper investigates the interconnected phenomena of sedentarisation and stigmatisation, illuminating the Nat community's transition from a nomadic to a sedentary lifestyle. The study was conducted across five districts in Rajasthan, a princely state in India. Two of the five districts included in the study are urban districts where a considerable number of Nat families rely on sex work. Conversely, the other three districts are rural, predominantly inhabited by Nat families engaged in agricultural and construction labor, with no ties to sex work. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and analysed using a qualitative content analysis approach. Findings indicate distinct settlement patterns within the Nat community, with significant variations in influencing factors across different districts.
