Comparing the impact of individual and collaborative games on young language learners' spelling skills in English 比较个人游戏和合作游戏对幼儿英语拼写技能的影响

This study examined the comparative effects of individual and collaborative game-based learning approaches on the development of English spelling skills among young learners, addressing the persistent difficulty that children encounter in mastering English orthography. Conducted in a private elementary school in northern Iran, the research involved 50 Persian-speaking students aged 9–11 who were divided into three groups: an individual game group (n = 18), a collaborative game group (n = 16), and a control group (n = 16) receiving traditional instruction. A quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control-group design was employed, explicitly allowing comparisons among all three instructional conditions to determine not only whether differences existed but also which approach produced the greatest learning gains. Data were analyzed using a mixed between-within groups ANOVA. Results revealed significant improvements in spelling across all groups, with the collaborative game-based group showing the greatest progress, supporting the view that peer interaction and shared problem-solving facilitate orthographic learning more effectively than independent or traditional practice. These findings underscore the pedagogical value of integrating collaborative digital and classroom-based games into young-learner English curricula, thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) through promoting active, equitable, and engaging learning environments. The study highlights the potential of collaborative educational games to strengthen spelling proficiency and learner motivation in EFL contexts.

Determinants of agricultural household poverty in agroecological zones: Highlands vs. lowlands in East Java 农业生态区农户贫困的决定因素:东爪哇高地与低地

There are notable differences in poverty between the lowland and highland agroecological zones in East Javan agricultural households. Geographic isolation, land fragmentation, and unequal access to infrastructure and technology all play a role in worsening poverty. This study uses raw data from the 2023 Agricultural Census and applies binary logistic regression to explore what factors contribute to poverty among farming households. The results show that poverty is more likely to occur in households led by someone under 40 years old (OR: 1.822), with low levels of education (OR: 1.378), with five or more family members (OR: 5.378), those working in informal jobs, owning little or no land, and not using modern technology. The impact is especially strong in certain areas: in the highland regions of Batu, Malang, Magetan, Bondowoso, and Lumajang, poverty risk is over seven times higher (OR: 7.052) due to a combination of these challenges and population pressure. On the other hand, technology adoption lowers poverty by 78 % (OR: 0.221) in the lowland regions of Lamongan, Bojonegoro, Sidoarjo, Probolinggo, and Pasuruan. Interestingly, while extended working hours significantly reduce poverty in lowland areas supported by better infrastructure, they fail to mitigate poverty in mountainous regions due to land degradation. Targeted interventions, highland infrastructure rehabilitation, and lowland areas' accelerated agricultural digitalization are the main policy implications.

What are the challenges facing the use of ChatGPT in the Bahrain public sector? 在巴林公共部门使用ChatGPT面临哪些挑战?

The Kingdom of Bahrain is expanding its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in an attempt to improve productivity in all sectors. This study used the technology acceptance model (TAM) to explore the challenges facing the use of a popular AI tool (ChatGPT) in the Bahrain public sector. The study gathers qualitative data based on a series of semi-structured interviews with 10 experts with extensive experience in AI and in Bahrain's public sector. Thematic analysis is used to derive conclusions. The key findings are that the primary barrier to the adoption of ChatGPT in Bahrain's public sector is privacy and security concerns. Other barriers, such as cost and training needs, were found to be either weak or easily overcome.

The role of paradiplomacy for cultural heritage preservation: The cosmological axis of yogyakarta 文化遗产保护的副外交作用:日惹的宇宙轴

The Yogyakarta Cosmological Axis, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023, provides a critical lens on how subnational paradiplomacy operates in heritage governance. This study aims to identify and analyze the role of paradiplomacy in cultural heritage preservation through the Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta case. In this case, the initiative was driven by subnational actors—particularly the Yogyakarta provincial government and cultural institutions—who mobilized local resources, legal frameworks, and cultural legitimacy to propose and manage the nomination. This configuration introduced a multi-layered governance dynamic as subnational actors engaged with international heritage frameworks. Using qualitative methods, including field observation and in-depth interviews, this research reveals how Yogyakarta leveraged international networks and aligned local planning instruments with UNESCO's criteria to translate Javanese cosmology into a globally legible heritage framework. While operating within a national system that grants no formal diplomatic authority to regions, these actors advanced cultural diplomacy through strategic negotiation and institutional innovation. The findings highlight both the agency and the constraints of subnational diplomacy and its mixed local impacts—shifting governance structures, contested spatial planning, and uneven community benefits. This study advances debates on paradiplomacy and cultural governance by demonstrating how subnational diplomacy can secure global recognition while maintaining cultural sovereignty in the Global South context.

An exploratory study of teacher talk in EFL classroom interaction 英语课堂互动中教师话语的探索性研究

While classroom interaction has been extensively examined in language education, studies remain scarce in the Ethiopian tertiary EFL context. This research explored the types and communicative functions of teacher talk used during speaking lessons, with particular attention to how interaction unfolded through the Initiation–Response–Feedback (IRF) structure. Framed within a constructivist paradigm, the study drew on classroom observations and interviews to analyze teacher talk using the FLINT system and Sinclair and Coulthard's IRF model. The findings revealed that teacher discourse was dominated by direct initiation moves, particularly informing, which led classroom talk in a largely teacher-centred manner. Although some indirect strategies, notably questioning for elicitation, were employed, these often failed to prompt extended student responses, resulting in truncated or incomplete IRF cycles. The response and feedback phases were often omitted, which limited opportunities for dialogic engagement and learner uptake. This suggests that teachers' attempts at interaction were not always aligned with the real-time dynamics of the classroom, as their input lacked contextual adaptation and comprehensible scaffolding. The study argues that adopting recommended talk types alone is insufficient unless grounded in an awareness of how communicative functions operate within specific classroom exchanges. To promote effective classroom interaction, instructors must develop adaptive expertise in managing IRF patterns more strategically—particularly by balancing informative input with responsive questioning and meaningful feedback that can sustain learner involvement and support language development.

Mobile commerce acceptance among micro, small, and medium enterprises in Indonesia: A case in the culinary sector 印尼中小微企业对移动商务的接受程度:以烹饪行业为例

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially those in the culinary sector, play an important role in Indonesia, to the extent that the government encourages them to digitize and expand their markets. GoBiz—a part of the Gojek digital mobile commerce (m-commerce) ecosystem—is one of the technologies supporting the digital transformation of culinary sector MSMEs. This study aimed to analyze the acceptance of m-commerce use among MSMEs in the culinary sector. The unified theory of acceptance and technology version 2 was used, which we extended by including the type of MSME as a moderating factor. This study employed a quantitative approach using an online questionnaire completed by 400 culinary MSMEs who used m-commerce and a qualitative approach through interviews with 30 such MSMEs (purposive sampling). Partial least square structural equation modeling was used for the quantitative data processing, while content analysis was employed for that of the qualitative data. The results showed that facilitating conditions, effort expectancy, social influence, price value, and trust significantly influenced m-commerce use, whereas performance expectancy alone did not. Similarly, intention to use influenced the actual use of m-commerce, but SME size did not moderate the relationship between intention to use and actual use of m-commerce. The results of this study can be used by merchant app providers to develop m-commerce by improving services to support MSMEs in the culinary sector.

This study examines modification to Kolb's Experiential Learning (EL) model in pre-service teacher (PST) education programs, utilizing the Delphi method to achieve expert consensus on its effectiveness and relevance. While EL is widely recognized for bridging theory and practice, previous implementations often lack the specificity and flexibility needed to meet modern educational demands. Building on the modifications proposed by Miller and Maellaro (2016), this study introduces adjustments across all stages of the model: Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. Through two rounds of data collection involving expert educators, the study identifies key modifications that better align the EL model with the needs of pre-service teachers. These modifications include integrating learning objectives and educational research into the Concrete Experience, root cause analysis and team reflection in the Reflective Observation, introducing primary and predicate abstraction into Abstract Conceptualization, and applying the 4F model (Facts, Feelings, Findings, and Future) to the Active Experimentation. Findings indicate strong support for incorporation of research-based strategies and collaborative practices, both of which foster critical thinking and reflective teaching. The study underscores the importance of expert consensus in refining educational models and provides a structured approach for adapting EL to teacher education. These modifications aim to enhance the preparation of PSTs by providing evidence-based, relevant and collaborative learning experiences that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Further research is needed to test the applicability and effectiveness of these modifications in real-world educational settings.

Exploring perspectives toward generative artificial intelligence integration in science education: A cross-generational study 人工智能在科学教育中的整合:一项跨代研究

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing various sectors, its integration into education presents both opportunities and challenges that warrant careful examination. This study explores the perspectives of science faculty members across different generational cohorts on the integration of generative AI (GenAI) in education in the Philippines, aiming to identify targeted areas for improvement. Utilizing a phenomenological approach with a cross-sectional design, the research involved semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 faculty members categorized into Generations X, Y (Millennials), and Z. The study sought to understand their knowledge, attitudes, perceived benefits, challenges, ethical concerns, and policy recommendations related to the integration of GenAI in science education. The results indicate varied familiarity with GenAI tools among the generations, with Gen X demonstrating moderate awareness but limited application and some resistance, Gen Y exhibiting diverse uses and concerns, especially in ethics, and Gen Z showing high awareness but perceived minimal practical engagement and confidence. Participants viewed GenAI as beneficial for enhancing efficiency and providing innovative learning tools, yet they also identified challenges such as over-dependence on technology, privacy-related ethical issues, and disparities in access. The study highlights the need for professional development, ethical guidelines, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure equitable GenAI integration. These findings offer valuable insights for developing effective strategies that harness the potential of GenAI while addressing generational differences, ultimately promoting a more seamless and inclusive educational environment.

Background/purpose

Health disparities persist among Black and Indigenous communities in Canada, despite national efforts to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion. These disparities are particularly pronounced in the management of chronic diseases and mental health conditions. Ethnic concordance and discordance may influence health outcomes. This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of patient–physician ethnic concordance and discordance on the management of chronic diseases and mental health conditions among Black and Indigenous patients.

Methods

This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. A university librarian conducted a comprehensive literature search. Eligible studies included peer-reviewed quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies. All screening stages were performed independently by four reviewers in COVIDENCE, with discrepancies resolved by a separate author.

Results

Of 6826 records screened, 24 studies were included (22 on Black patients, two on Indigenous patients). Evidence suggested that concordant care improved select outcomes, including blood pressure control, medication adherence, HIV testing uptake, pain assessment, and referrals to traditional healing. Interpersonal outcomes such as communication, trust, and perceptions of providers were also consistently stronger in concordant relationships. However, effects on disease prevention, monitoring, and overall clinical outcomes were largely inconsistent. The small number of studies limited findings for Indigenous populations.

Discussion

The overall impact of ethnic concordance on chronic disease and mental health management appears limited. Our findings do not demonstrate a consistent association between concordance and clinical outcomes. Addressing health inequities may require broader systemic and structural interventions, including improving access to high-quality care, mitigating institutional bias, and strengthening the capacity of minority-serving healthcare settings.

Background/objective

Talent management is one of the most crucial factors in an organization's success in today's complex and competitive environment. This study aims to design and explain an integrated talent management model based on a good governance approach for Jahad Daneshgahi.

Methods

This research used the grounded theory method and the Strauss and Corbin approach. Theoretical sampling was employed to select managers and human resource experts from Jahad Daneshgahi, and data collection continued until theoretical saturation was achieved. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 human resources experts, organizational managers, and university professors, and analyzed in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. From 345 initial codes, categories related to the three aforementioned axes were identified and categorized.

Results

Contextual factors, including organizational culture and climate, leadership style, resources and facilities, Knowledge integration, and organizational structure, serve as key infrastructures that provide the basis for effective talent management. Intervening factors, such as Internal organizational challenges, organizational dynamics, and changes, as well as external factors, play a dual role as either facilitator or obstacle, depending on the circumstances. Implementation strategies, such as enhancing the workplace, strengthening organizational communication, promoting employee development and empowerment, and fostering innovation and creativity, can improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness by leveraging contextual capacities and mitigating obstacles.

Conclusion

The proposed research model in this study presents an integrated view of the triple nexus of contextual, intervening, and strategic factors within the framework of good governance, thereby enhancing human resource performance, organizational productivity, and effectiveness.

Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 human resources experts, organizational managers, and university professors, and analyzed in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. From 345 initial codes, categories related to the three aforementioned axes were identified and categorized.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Contextual factors, including organizational culture and climate, leadership style, resources and facilities, Knowledge integration, and organizational structure, serve as key infrastructures that provide the basis for effective talent management. Intervening factors, such as Internal organizational challenges, organizational dynamics, and changes, as well as external factors, play a dual role as either facilitator or obstacle, depending on the circumstances.
