Observations made with Betadine vaginal suppository in the treatment of 60 women suffering from colpitis have been discussed. The results of microbiological examinations of vaginal discharge sampled before 1 week and 4 weeks after the onset of therapy were compared. The effectiveness, tolerance of therapy, and the subjective opinion of the treated women were analysed. According to the results of the examinations in response to Betadine vaginal suppository the positivity of vaginal discharge for Candida decreased from 16 to 3 cases, for Trichomonas from 8 to 1 case, for aerobic bacteria from 16 to 7 cases, and the occurrence of mixed infections from 20 to 2 cases. Subjective complaints, burning, stinging sensation were rapidly moderated. In 52 of the 60 women discharge ceased, in another 4 cases it significantly decreased. In 51 cases burning sensation in the vagina ceased, and in 5 women it significantly decreased. Recurrence was not observed when a control examination was done after 1 month. The women tolerated Betadine vaginal suppository well and found it effective and easily applicable. At the beginning of treatment burning sensation was aggravated in 3 cases. These patients refused to further participate in the examination and received systemic treatment. Due to its broad bactericidal, fungicidal, protozoicide action and its good tolerability Betadine suppository was found to be useful for the local treatment of colpitis.

The action and side-effects of Loderix (EGIS) were examined in comparison with Hismanal (Janssen) containing the non-sedative H1-receptor antagonist astemizole, by double-blind, cross-over, self-controlled method. On the basis of the changes observed in response to the two drugs in the symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma of 21 patients suffering from pollenosis Loderix proved to be of the same value as Hismanal considering both clinical effectivity and side-effects.

The patients received varying premedication, introduction, and maintenance narcosis. The combined use of the two non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents proved to be favourable and useful from the anaesthesiological aspect.

Summarizing the observations of foreign and Hungarian investigators it may be concluded that: 1. Bromhexine is an expectorant of outstanding effect which has virtually no side-effects when used in therapeutic doses; by loosening the thick, sticky mucus in increases the effectivity of mucociliary clearance and hinders the infection of thick excretion sticking to the mucosa. 2. It promotes the diffusion of antibiotics into the lung tissue. 3. Considering the increasingly important aspects of "cost-benefit", the use of drug is also advantageous. 4. In addition to the traditional drug forms (tablet, injection, solution) new forms of the drug (inhalation aerosol, nasal spray) increase its indication field to a high degree. These allow to apply local expectorant-mucolytic therapies and to successfully treat the so-called sicca diseases (rhinitis sicca, pharyngitis sicca, etc.), which frequently occur in laryngological practice and was difficult to influence until present.

Taleum inhalation aerosol, produced by EGIS Pharmaceuticals Works, was examined in an 8-week open cross-over self-controlled study in 50 patients suffering from extrinsic bronchial asthma. Intal powder capsule inhaled with the aid of a spinhaler was used as a reference drug. Changes in subjective complaints and symptoms were continuously recorded on a score scale in the patients' diary. The alterations in respiratory parameters were measured. Laboratory parameters were monitored. On the basis of the results Taleum spray was found to be effective in the prevention of bronchial asthma. It proved to be a well tolerated drug form of simple use.

The effect of Clostilbegyt + Humegon + Pregnyl ovulation inductive combination therapy was examined in the woman members of 20 sterile couples appearing at the Outpatient Department of Cryospermatology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Postgraduate Medical School. In 18 of the 20 cases follicle maturation and ovulation could be induced. In the male members of the couples therapy-resistant sterility existed at the same. By using artificial insemination by donors with cryopreserved sperms, gravidity could be obtained in 14 cases. The importance of the optimal timing of AID has been emphasized. In the course of transvaginal ultrasonography folliculometry was completed with the control of the pre-ovulatory changes of the endometrium. The appearance of the pre-ovulatory ring preceded the occurrence of pregnancy in all cases, being a sign of predictive value considering conception.

The effectivity of Betadine skin and mucosa disinfectant solution and Betadine hand disinfectant soap (MUNDIPHARMA A. G. and EGIS Pharmaceuticals has been examined in hospitalized patients and hospital employees. The history of the production of polyvynilpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-Iodine) the mechanism of actions and the biological effects of these products have been discussed. Bacteriological samples were collected from the skin of four regions most frequently used for injection (fossa cubitalis, right and left hands and gluteal region, right and left sides) of 10 hospitalized patients before and after washing these regions with Betadine. The average of 68 microorganisms Colony Forming Unit (CFU) recorded before disinfection decreased below 1 CFU on average in the samples taken after disinfection. From both hands of 6 hospital employees 190 CFUs could be demonstrated following washing hands with the commonly used soap. After washing hands with Betadine soap a total of 1 CFU could be demonstrated. The hands of 44 hospital employees were infected with E. coli of non-pathogenous reference strain whereafter samples were collected. After the disinfection of the hands with Betadine liquid soap samples were taken again. In the samples taken before disinfection an average of 745 CFUs, in samples taken after disinfection an average total of 11 CFUs were found. The results prove the outstanding disinfectant action of the two examined Betadine products.

The role of nitrate compounds in the therapy of pancreatic diseases is discussed in this review. A short overview is given about the physiological background of the treatment: the regulation of Oddi's sphincter function and its pharmacology. An adjuvant role is attributed to the free outflow of pancreatic secretion in the treatment of pancreatic pain and in the prevention of relapses. The authors describe their clinical practice during the last 15 years: nitrates with short half-life in the treatment of acute pancreatitis (amylnitrit or nitroglycerin spray) which have a low risk of developing nitrate tolerance; chronic administration of retard nitroglycerin in chronic pancreatitis and Oddi's sphincter hypertonic dyskinesia. For preventing the induction of nitrate tolerance, Nitromint retard is recommended twice a day combined with a calcium antagonist or with theophylline during the nitrate-free period.

Paxirasol aerosol applied in daily 3 x 5 puff doses in the treatment of silicosis patients is found to be a well tolerated drug form. In the course of the 21-day therapy especially coughing and chest pain were moderated, but the product also controlled, the catarrhal coat formation on the mucosa. It influenced abundant expectoration and dispnoea beneficially. During the therapy the laboratory parameters did not change. The objective respiratory parameters improved but the change was non-significant. Paxirasol aerosol is found useful in the treatment of chronic bronchitis accompanying silicosis.
