V. Cortesi Ardizzone
Objectives
To describe the active ingredients in tooth bleaching agents and their mechanism of action, with particular emphasis on side effects, and to provide management skills to achieve successful results.
Materials and methods
The author analyzes her experience with various products provided by the cosmetic dental industry. Particular emphasis is placed on the procedures for home bleaching. The article also includes an analysis of the most recent publications in the field of cosmetic dentistry.
Results and conclusions
The aim of a successful dental bleaching is to achieve a satisfactory degree of whiteness without provoking unpleasant side effects, such as acute tooth sensitivity. For that reason, bleaching must be regarded as a true intervention that requires a careful patients selection and a thorough understanding of the procedures involved. Dental bleaching is being requested more and more frequently, so high-level professionalism among operators must be promoted.

Objectives
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the enamel protection induced by a new mouthwash containing phytocomplexes and natural extracts against acid attacks.
Materials and methods
Sixteen pairs of enamel fragments obtained from healthy human teeth were used in this study and treated with mouthwash or with deionized water. Ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectrophotometry and SEM ultra-morphological analyses were performed for the evaluation of the enamel protection by the mouthwash after citric and lactic acid challenge.
Results
The ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectrophotometry and the SEM ultra-morphological analysis showed that the specimens treated with the mouthwash containing Lapacho and Chios Mastic presented no sign of enamel demineralisation.
Conclusions
Daily use of this innovative mouthwash may help protect against enamel demineralization caused by bacteria and food.

Objectives
To consider methods for assessing tooth color and to describe the classification of dental discolorations.
Materials and methods
The author describes the color characteristics of dental tissues and the methods of color evaluation (subjective or objective by means of a spectrophotometer). The intrinsic and extrinsic tooth discolorations and their etiologies are examined.
Results and conclusions
Intrinsic discolorations may be pre-eruttive, if formed during the development of tissues that make up the tooth, or post-eruptive, if formed after the eruption of teeth. The extrinsic discolorations or pigments are the most common and thus are the reasons where patient asks for a bleaching treatment more frequently. In fact, they cannot be discolored, but cleaned. They are most easily removed with professional procedures and with a good compliance of the patient at home.

Objectives
The aim of this article was to evaluate the literature about the level of safety associated with the use of air-polishing prophilaxis units.
Materials and methods
The professional risk related to powder air-polishing with glycine and sodium bicarbonate was analyzed and the technical characteristics of equipment and materials were highlighted.
Results and conclusions
The removal of dental plaque by air-polishing devices is a fast and effective procedure, but the potential risks associated with it are not always correctly highlighted.

Objectives
To reduce the incidence rates of infections in the dental surgery environment, it is necessary to control the transmission of pathogens caused by the lack of hand hygiene of dental healthcare workers. The work presented is based on recent developments that emerged from a review of the latest scientific evidence. Its purpose is to provide an easy-to-consult guide to improve the compliance with new procedures and modern hydro-alcoholic preparations by dentists.
Materials and methods
Hand hygiene procedures and products were assessed by carrying out a concise and critical review of the most recent and academic literature on the topic.
Results and conclusions
The protection of patients and healthcare workers is guaranteed by a correct hand hygiene as well. Indeed, the WHO considers hand hygiene of high priority and promoted a campaign through the mass communication media called Save lives: wash your hands. At the time of the A(H1N1) influence virus, the Italian Ministry of Health put great emphasis on the importance of handwashing. In Europe, today we tend to replace the quite harsh washing with water, soap or detergents with the use of hydro-alcoholic preparations. In this paper we describe the methods and timings that can reduce the need to wash one's hands. These provide the same biocide effectiveness, yet they require less time and are simpler to use, thereby improving compliance of dental health workers in respect of hand hygiene.
