Objectives

The aim of the study is to assess and compare the desensitizing effects of Er:Yag laser and CO2 laser with fluoride gel in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.

Materials and methods

The 15 patients selected are affected by hypersensitivity in the upper premolar; they have been treated randomly with Er:Yag laser, CO2 laser, fluoride gel, and placebo. The pain was evaluated before the treatment by using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and by air emission from a standard air-water syringe.

Results

There were statistically significant differences between the group treated with lasers and fluoride gel versus the group treated with placebo. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups treated with Er:Yag and CO2 laser and the groups treated with fluoride gel and placebo.

Conclusions

Er:Yag and CO2 lasers together with fluoride gel are useful in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity.

Objectives

Patient compliance in modern dentistry is essential: it allows elective therapeutic choices as well as stabilization, prevention, and healing of oral and systemic pathologies. The main purpose of this research was to compare three motivation techniques, based on different home oral hygiene educational methodologies, in order to identify the most effective on patient compliance.

Materials and methods

Sixty subjects were equally divided into three groups; their PlI and BoP were measured at four different times; the compliance level was evaluated as well.

Results and conclusions

PlI and BoP were reduced in all groups, while only 15% and 55% of patients in group C and A, respectively, achieved a good compliance level. Group B (65%) provided the best practice method.

Objectives

To collect the experience of a group of dental hygienists in the field of home dental hygiene. Their experience is compared with current evidence to provide well-grounded indications on home dental hygiene.

Materials and methods

The experiences of 14 dental hygienists in different areas of home dental hygiene were collected and compared. Recent literature was reviewed focusing on meta-analyses and randomized trials.

Results and conclusions

This study suggests useful indications in different areas of home dental hygiene based on patients’ characteristics. According to the results, some clinical trials might be planned to further evaluate the effectiveness of those indications.

Objectives

The aim of the study is to assess the importance of saliva and to investigate the problem of xerostomy also known as “dry mouth syndrome”.

Methods

In order to start the experiment a standard protocol has been created. This protocol allowed to examine patients with xerostomy through a standard and precise procedure. Xerostomy is caused by reduction of production of saliva. In spite of the fact that xerostomy is thought a rare trouble, it involves a number of patients with symptoms such as dry mouth for long time. The protocol consists of nine points to apply in the checking of patients. The sperimental protocol was applied and followed carefully during the three meetings with patients (first check up, check up after a month, and check up after three months).

Results and conclusions

Both objective and statistic analysis underlined a better xerostomy including an increase of salivary secretion and significative reduction of plaque and bleeding indexes.

Objectives

Glycemic index (GI) refers to the effect of food on glycemia and insulinemia. It is widely used in nutrition and diabetology to advise patients on adequate diets to maintain constant glucose and insulin blood levels. As GI is mainly related to the metabolic availability of glucides, it is believed it might influence the activity of oral bacteria. The aim of this work was to assess the relationships between the consumption of food with high GI and the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index.

Methods

The trial was carried out in the Dental Clinic of the University of L’Aquila, during the academic year 2006-2007, in 272 students (115 males and 148 females; mean age, 24.2±2.6 and 23.7±3.3 years, respectively), from the University School of Medicine. The consumption of food with a high GI was investigated with the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index.

Results

In some experimental groups, the consumption of food with a high GI was directly proportional to DMFT.

Conclusions

An inappropriate intake of food with a high GI seems to be linked with dental caries. This data suggests that collaboration among medical doctor, dental hygienist, and nutritionist would be useful for the patient for the prevention not only of metabolic diseases, but dental pathology as well.

Objectives

To describe the risks for oral mucosa induced by ethylic alcohol in mouthwashes with a particular attention to middle- and long-term risk of cancer development

Materials and methods

The available literature was reviewed beginning from the early studies in the ‘70ies up to most recent publications

Results

The issue of the risks induced by alcohol in mouthwashes is still a matter of debate; However, many authors in recent years have become more and more cautious, sometime advising not to use products containing alcohol

Conclusions

Ethylic alcohol has always been one of the most frequently employed component in drug and mouthwash production; according to some authors, there are now some evidence against the long term use of mouthwashes containing alcohol.
