Abstract This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of two instructional methodologies in teaching basic nursing skills in the learning laboratory. One methodology used an interactive, student-centered focus; the other used traditional lectures and demonstrations. A repeated measures, experimental design was employed, supplemented by qualitative and questionnaire data. Seventy sophomore and 50 junior baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in their fundamentals nursing courses were recruited for this study at a large midwestern university during a period of curriculum revision. The students ranged in age from 19 to 51 years, with a mean age of 23 years. Two methods covering the same content were compared for teaching basic nursing skills. There were no significant differences between the groups' pretest to posttest cognitive gains, although there were cognitive gains for both groups.

Abstract For aging baby boomers, “It's a Small World After All” has become far more meaningful in recent years than when we were children. The words of this popular, catchy tune have become a reality in our lives as we progress through the information age and today's technological revolution. The quantum leaps of the last quarter century in travel and telecommunications have demolished barriers across time and space.

Abstract It's in the name! Founders of organizations, as well as parents, give significant thought and emotional energy to selecting the “right” names for their offspring. Names honor familial icons, create associations with current celebrities and cultures, or reveal expectations and aspirations. So it is with the formal name of NLN. The name of our organization, National League for Nursing, honors our heritage and reveals our expectations.

Abstract This is a story of partnership, investing, and planned change. It is a story of tremendous learning and growth, anticipated outcomes, and a few surprises. The process of undergraduate curriculum reform at Pace University, in conjunction with grant preparation, led to the development of partnerships between and among individuals. As these partnerships evolved, organizations, people, and systems changed.

Why women and men choose nursing. 为什么女性和男性选择护理。

The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast why women and men choose nursing. Male and female nursing students enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program at every class level were interviewed over a two-year period. The interviews enabled the subjects to give voice to their motivations, needs, and expectations. Data were obtained and analyzed using grounded theory methodology. The analyses, performed both by the author and by a second intercoder, included constant comparison with substantive and categorical coding for the purpose of theory generation. While male and female students demonstrated comparable commitment to care for their patients, differences emerged within the construct of power. In addition, there was a strong contrast between male and female students regarding practical motivations for choosing nursing (e.g., salary and working conditions).

Abstract Nursing is once again in the midst of one of its cyclic shortages, with forecasts of an even more intense shortage developing by 2010. At the American Nurses Association Convention in June, I represented NLN in a panel discussion on how national nursing organizations perceive this national issue and how they plan to help resolve it. For purposes of the presentation, I identified three primary ways for NLN to contribute to both short-term and long-term solutions to the nursing shortage problem: Maintaining a comprehensive database regarding the new supply of nurses. Contributing to the substantive work of preparation of practitioners for an ever-changing health care environment. Providing faculty development activities to assist in enhancing the applicant pool to schools of nursing.

Abstract The current nursing shortage is predicted to be longer term and more protracted than previous shortages. It is therefore essential that schools of nursing develop new ways of preparing the nursing workforce and attracting potential nursing students. This article describes efforts by the University of Maryland School of Nursing to address the nursing shortage by developing public and private partnerships and building alliances with the health care industry. The school employs a variety of strategies, including increasing public awareness through marketing and the media, supporting legislation, utilizing technology, expanding articulation agreements, and working with local secondary school systems.

Abstract “Start spreading the news,…I want to be a part of it…” These words from Frank Sinatra's famous song about NLN's hometown — New York, New York — evoke the feelings that emerged from the NLN's Education Summit 2000, held in Nashville in September. This meeting must be represented as nothing short of a “happening” for nursing — a happening that made public and sanctioned our needs as educators: to share new information about curriculum and instruction, to network regarding our lives as educators, to continue our skills development, and to disseminate information about what we have learned as researchers, clinicians, and administrators.

Abstract Genetics advances and their clinical applications have created a new era in health care. As a result of the Human Genome Project, initiated in 1991 as a collaborative effort of the National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Human Genome Research, and the Department of Energy, there is a new understanding among health care professionals regarding the role of genetics in health and illness.

Abstract The great depression of the 1930s had a devastating effect on the nursing profession. Conditions changed rapidly as clinics and public hospitals became overcrowded and public health agencies were swamped with requests to serve a society in need (1). In voluntary hospitals, nurse unemployment soared as private duty nurses found themselves no longer in demand. Concerned with the gravity of the situation, the Committee on the Distribution of Nursing Services, comprised of representatives of the National League of Nursing Education, the American Nurses Association, and the National Organization for Public Health Nursing (NOPHN), contacted the presidents of boards of trustees, hospital superintendents, and directors of nursing, urging them to use graduate nurses instead of students to staff hospitals (1).
